Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of former Oxford United striker and free agent, Wes Thomas on a one-year-deal.

The 31-year-old free agent joins following a spell with League One side, Oxford United, where he spent two years going on to make 57 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals.

Thomas began his career in the Academy system at Queens Park Rangers, before departing following the conclusion of his two-year scholarship. After a number of spells at clubs in the non-league circuit, Thomas made his Football League debut with Dagenham & Redbridge in October 2008 in a 2-0 victory away at Rochdale. After returning to the club following a short term loan to Grays Athletic, Thomas made the move to Cheltenham Town in 2010 where he made 43 appearances in all competitions scoring 19 times, ending the season as the club's top scorer.

After joining Crawley Town in 2011, Thomas joined Bournemouth in League One on a short-term loan before making the move permanent in January 2012. During a three season spell at the Cherries, Thomas made 58 appearances, scoring 11 goals and enjoyed numerous loan spells at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Birmingham City.

In January 2014, Thomas signed a short-term contract for Rotherham United, helping them earn promotion to the Championship, scoring 6 goals in 16 appearances. At the end of his contract, Thomas returned to Birmingham City in the Championship making 37 appearances, scoring 6 goals. After finding his options limited in his second season with the Blues and after loan spells at Swindon Town and Bradford City, Thomas joined Oxford United. After an early end to his first season with the club due to an Achilles injury, Thomas had a successful 2017/18 season, scoring 11 times in 40 appearances in all competitions.

Over the period of his career to date, Thomas has made a total of 297 appearances, scoring 76 goals.

You will be able to catch Wes Thomas' first interview with the club exclusively on our iFollow Mariners channel later today.

Thomas will be available for tomorrow's visit of Lincoln City and will wear the number 39 shirt for this season. Have you got your tickets for tomorrow yet? Secure yours now at early bird prices using our online ticket store.

Blimey, almost as many clubs as fellow #39 Anthony Elding! 10 goals in league 1 last season (32 starts + 5 as sub) though is decent enough

I'm sure some will jump on the fact he's a free agent therefore not very good/injury prone but..
After an early end to his first season with the club due to an Achilles injury, Thomas had a successful 2017/18 season, scoring 11 times in 40 appearances in all competitions.

isn't shabby at all. Worth a punt, and maybe within the pool of forwards we now have of various ages and experience there's a permutation that MJ will find works for his requirements.

if he is around 1 - 4 scoring ratio in his career and can chalk up some assists on top of that then on paper thats a decent addition and certainly ahead of some of his team mates.

Spent the last 7 years playing at League One/Championsip level.

Last time he played at League Two level he scored in 18 in 41.

Last season he scored 10 in 32 starts (+5 sub appearances) in League One.

17 clubs, 5ft 11ins.  Put him straight in MJ, don't leave him on the bench, may be too late when u bring him on. Unleash him with Cookey and Vernam around him, and lets rattle them Imps.

looks a decent signing, has an alright goal scoring record at a higher level, from what i've seen of him he's decent in the air, strong and relatively quick - on paper exactly what we need - lets see how he gets on.... Welcome Wes!

I reckon this is a real good signing. 10 goals in the league above last season in 32 games is no mean feat.

Their fans seem to rate him, saw a post from a few weeks ago, some of them saying they can't believe he hasn't got a club yet, and that lots of league 2 clubs were probably after him...

Decent scoring record at levels above us, Oxford fans seem to rate him. Brings some experience to a relatively youthful forward line. And look at the size of him on youtube! He's not going to get bullied. Hopefully a really good foil for Cook and Vernham to play off.

Here's hoping he is the new Lump!

i guessed him a couple of weeks ago when someone posted that he'd heard we were in for an Oxford player (so that makes it 1 correct guess in almost 30 attempts!). Seems like mainly positive comments on their forum, although it seems debateable that he's a big hold up striker.Mentions that he's a goal poacher and likes ball played down the channels. Whether he's quick also seems to be a moot point .apparently was on good money when he was there (but that can't possibly be true as JF never opens his wallet, other than to pay a pittance to players no one else wants)

We're going places with Thomas, Cook up front...... I'll get my coat.

Even if he's not necessarily a hold up player, if he likes the ball into channels then that will create room for Cook and Vernam to advance in to. We could put Hooper on the left side like we finished the season with now and that will make us more effective. I'd like to see us try this tomorrow in midfield and in front:

         Welsh    Hess
Cook     Vernam    Hooper
             Big Wes

Allow Vernam and Cook the freedom to roam a little bit. It won't be perfect having Davis behind Cook but once RHJ is fit and able to push forward it'll give Cook more freedom to roam without compromising on our width. But that improves our mobility, gives us a target up front even if not in the sense of a traditional target man and means we don't need to play both Welsh and Woolford which makes us too pedestrian. Still concerns elsewhere on the pitch but it's better than it was.

That's a very decent signing on paper, which is all we can judge it on at the minute.

After watching that video and looking at his record, he looks to be just what we need to compliment what we've already got. Let's hope so anyway! I wonder if he's match fit enough to pitch straight in tomorrow?

He's absolutely right, he is a journeyman, more clubs than Tiger Woods, but then journeymen are all we are going to get (the ones we really want go to Man U, Real Madrid or PSG)

At least he's a journeyman who has scored the odd goal in his time. Worrying that no one else was after him tho' (must have been desperate to agree to come to BP)

And no, even he wouldn't shag Pamela Anderson:

'Have you taken precautions Santa?'

'Yes Pamela I've tied my feet to the end of the bed so I don't fall in'.

Bloody hell Father Christmas, go back into hibernation and come out on the 24th December, hopefully with a bit of xmas spirit...
Yeah, he's been around a bit, but so has Pamela Anderson and I bet you wouldn't say no to her!!!!

Dont rise to him honestly. He thrives on the attention.

Sounds a solid signing. Can’t see him getting 90 minutes tomorrow unless he’s been training with anyone over pre season

I'd argue the point that no one else was after him, that's something neither of us know, but, it does appear we probably offered him the best deal, if you look at history he has turned contracts down before to stay in and around London, plus he's only got a 1-year deal with us, so I'm expecting MJ to have put pressure on him to come up with goods if he wants another deal and he has got a habit of scoring goals.

And I'm sorry, but there's few red blooded males of my generation wouldn't want a night with Pamela, my god, she could suck a golf ball through 100 yards of hosepipe!!

The only problem with having Pamela Anderson would be deciding which position to have her in.

If Jolley has £100k to spend on a fee for a striker then maybe he has put some of that into wages.  Would also explain why only one year.

Big lad up front who scored 1 in 4 I’ll take that, decent signing I reckon. All being well the Dale Ladson interview won’t have made him regret it.

Unfortunately I do, it was a shithole the last time I was there and I don't suppose it has seen much improvement since

As far as players having to be desperate to come to BP, it is a fact that players are not falling over themselves to join our club, they are not demanding transfers so that they can come to BP.

It really is time twits like Mighty Mariner and his ilk woke up and smelled the coffee. The number of so called 'targets' who have declined to come to Grimsby Town continues to grow every season.

Our latest acquisition was, like many before him, without a club and the season is already two weeks old. Perhaps you could draw up a list for Jolley of all the L2 (or above) level players other than those currently out of a club who, given the choice would wish to come to Grimsby Town (write it on the back of a stamp)

Its painful but its a fact and anyone who thinks different is kidding himself

This new bloke looks and sounds useful and could be a very useful addition indeed but I bet he didn't turn down many other offers to come to Town

Maybe I need to wake up and smell the coffee too but I would be more worried if no players rejected us.  Maybe players are rejecting us because we are being ambitious in who we are looking at.

Maybe players are rejecting us because we are being ambitious in who we are looking at.

I would love it if that were the case but sadly ambition with signings does not win matches (ask Lennie Lawrence) and they are still rejecting us because we are so unattractive to them , for whatever reason.

We are like it or not, bargain basement and therefore attract players to match.

Not to say this seasons signings will not be outstanding, Vernam, Hesenthaler and Welsh already look excellent to me

We are obviously looking at players who can improve us and are ambitious of our targets. If the press is true about us going for bowman in the scottish premier, Angol who signed for league one and Long who also went to Fleetwood in league one, I'd rather us go for players like this than sign anyone in the hope they come good.
The amount of players that have turned us down says we are aiming high and believe in Thomas we have made a pretty decent signing for this level due to our patience.
Well done Jolley.
Looking forward to tomorrow and hope thomas starts in place of Hooper

Why would you say that about a team you 'supposedly suppprt'?

Really? Are we supposed to blindly agree with everything the club does without any word of criticism?

I happen to think Wes Thomas is a good signing, however you might as well give Robles' shirt to one of the youth team kids like Burrell or Paul-Jones.

For me, support means that I want us to win every game and sign the best players possible within our means. However, current circumstances (lowly League 2 club with apparently moderate budget, crap ground & training facilities) mean that some turn us down. These are facts - doesn't mean I'm not a supporter - just a fuckingfrustrated one.

I agree with many of your points... However as a Grimsby Town fan/supporter, I cannot understand a train of thought that would allow me to say players must be desperate to sign for us.

I'm a twit because I don't agree with your monotonous, pessimist, negative views?

The most positive thing I've ever read from one of your posts was the last section baize in saying he looks 'useful'... But you just had to finish with yet more pessimism! How can you possibly know who and how many teams were interested in Wes Thomas?

You say players are not falling over themselves to sign for us... What about John Welsh who took a massive pay cut to join Town and said himself he'd had considerable interest from other teams but he'd CHOSEN town? What about Elliot Whitehouse who turned down a new deal at Lincoln to sign for Grimsby? Yes that's just two examples but I bet there are just as many 'reports' in of players turning down interest from elsewhere as there are of players turning US down.

Neither of us can of course but given that we are two weeks into the new season and he was still out of a job it seems likelty to me that there was not a queue of Football League clubs fighting to take him on

As for Welsh and the other bloke , granted they (allegedly) chose Town (above how many others we don't know - unless you do of course) but weren't they out of contract at their clubs?

The signings of Hearn, Connell, Hannah, LJL, Palmer, Almond and Bogle was met with lots of derision on The Fishy when they joined us but they all scored goals for us.
Thomas is a good signing for the position the club is in.
The fact is we are, at this moment in a time, a bottom half 2nd division team and will lose out on a high percentage of signings due to our recent football history, money available for signings  etc.
Another factor is this is Jolleys first full season in charge of a English football team and a lot of players will never have heard of him so maybe are unsure about how long he will be the manager.
Personally I think he has made some decent signings which will ensure we finish mid table this season and with a few new signings next season will see us push for the play offs as a minimum

Here's a video of all goals he scored for Oxford last season.

Some excellent centre forward play and finishing IMO.

Read back what you’ve written, how do you know we’ve not signed “the best players possible within our means” ?

How is your comment and similar ones previously supportive? How do you know that people on and off the pitch aren’t doing everything thing they can within their powers to take us forward?

You like many others don't so maybe just maybe it’s time to give other people some time to get things right on the best way they know.

We all want better but picking fault in everything the club does is stupid.

Happy with this signing welcome Wes, scored at championship and league 1 level, still youngish at 31 and as for the journeyman tag well the club cant win with some dumbfooks ,get a young lad in and its "not a proven goa scorer blah blah, get someone older ands it "more clubs than Tiger Woods, journeyman blah blah.and its always the same sad losers making the same sad comments .
P.S I would give Pammy the best 20 seconds she's ever had(I wish) UTM, now lets smash the gimps

Would that be including 4play ?

4play? We have plenty of 4play in our house. It's the best way to catch up with those Channel 4 programmes you've missed.

That's balderdash isn't it. Hearn, Hannah, Bogle were all received very positively when their signings were announced. Connell, Palmer, LJL and Amond were met with a 'who?' but no derision. Almond might be a different matter: he was nuts.

A few of us derided LJL after he was signed granted.

I always thought 4 play was when one of our strikers had a shot and the crowd alarmingly shouted 4.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Shows how upmarket football has become. It used to be '2 points to Wigan'.

The only problem with having Pamela Anderson would be deciding which position to have her in.

She'd definitely be up front and have no problem scoring.   UTM

Should also be mentioned that he had a serious Achilles injury in 16-17 and then was injured for a fair while with hamstring problems in 17-18. So scoring record looks better in light of that info, but on the reverse is he injury prone and on the downward slope?
Have to say looking forward to seeing him play as he does seem to have a bit of quality

Looks like he knows when to time his runs, also strong on the ball and deceptively quick, bet he keeps defenders on their toes and allows space to open up for others. Hope he is fit and can stay injury free this season, could also help attract others in January. Would be nice to see the salute on derby debut, a lot of overly confident Gimps out there, just remember pride comes before a big kick in the nads! UTM
