Lawrie McMennemy and George Kerr caused the peaks in 1972 and 1979. It wasnt just the football, they had charisma and got the whole town talking about football again.

I have a feeling Jolley mighty well be the man to have a similar effect.

After years in the doldrums we are crying out for the return of a decent side playing attractive football. From what we saw against Notts County, there is every chance Jolley will deliver.  If we get on a good run I think we will see the crowds increase very nicely indeed.

Maybe I am just a deluded optimist, but the evidence of the last few games was very much pointing in the right direction.

The team did the talking in 79/80 it was an outstanding season with locally born players throughout the team. I'm not sure Kerr was particularly charismatic, and it was Tom Casey and John Newman that had assembled that outstanding bunch of players. The impetus carried us through until it was all wrecked by Ly*ns.

To increase gates we need to engage the community. I can think of 3 games next season where the Osmond may sell out - Lincoln, Notts County and Tranmere. So that is 20 league games where the club should be doing everything in their power to get 300 local school kids and their parent in the Osmond for free. Incentives also need to be there for the next generation. 2x under 12 tickets free with a paying adult which would suddenly make an afternoon at the football a bit more affordable for the masses and convince some of them freebies to return.

If the club managed all the catering, some of the lost revenue from reduced ticket costs would be regained this way.

Absolutely no chance of Tranmere selling out. And past experience says Notts will only do so if they are doing well. Lincoln’s bandwagon will probably mean they will sell out, besides that probably Coventry if they don’t go up.

I think one of the problems is that the matchday experience is shite, it hasnt really changed in over 40 years whilst customer expectations have increased. I can't have a urine and get an overpriced poor quality cup of tea and sausage roll in the half time interval. The toilets are really appalling and there is a relunctance to spend a few quid to make them better. I would really enjoy some othee snacks  / food with some Bolgheri superior and would pay a premium for this but under Fenty we get nothing

Although Lyons was hated the more observant fans could see he was just the scapegoat used by the then board of directors to trim the player's wage bill and cream off the assets.

Sounds familiar? It should do.

Tranmere and Notts get reasonable home crowds, better than ours (but they have much better stadia) but their away support is sh*t. Notts didn't even sell out the Osmond for a critical game - if they'd won they would have still been in with a shout for automatic promotion. Northampton and Oldham will bring good followings if they are doing well. Lincoln will fill the Osmond for the foreseeable future and Cov will fill it if they are up there. Chesterfield going is a loss of a good following but overall I think we'll get a marginal increase in away numbers - Bury will bring more than Barnet and Accy and Wycombe are poor travellers. Crowds should go up overall if we get a half decent start.

Have to disagree with you about Lyons and the board.

Lyons was a complete and utter idiot who sounded like he knew what he was doing but in reality he was 20 years behind the time. He over trained the players to such an extent that several players had to have hernia operations as a result of his methods. He got rid of Gary Lund an England U21 international because apart from scoring 20 goals a season he didn't run around like a headless chicken. He then promoted himself to center forward so he could win the hoofs from our defenders.

He made Slade look like a tactical genius
