but if you're out of contract or a free agent then a job's a job, isn't it?

And therein identifies our player profile budget in the transfer market place ..

That incident almost derailed the whole season. It was clear something happened. A player wouldn't make that up, why would he? The squad were clearly affected by it too but the club swept it under the carpet after initially saying it would be reported to the police (it wasn't).

The club doesnt have a good record on race, does it?

Why did he not go to the Police himself then?  As to why would he make it up? because he gave the w@nker sign to fans as he trudged off at half time and somehow needed to justify it.  I am fully aware (unfortunately) that we have plenty of retards capable of racial abuse, even to our own players.  However, I was there that day and if he actually heard something directed at him from as far away as he was with all that noise I would be absolutely amazed.  The squad where probably affected by the wave of abuse from our own fans that day, no doubt about that.  It was appalling to say the least.  But I'm sorry, I genuinely think that Toto was using the race card as a cop out.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

And you’ve now used an ableist term to support your argument?

retarded
Retarded is a word to describe someone who is mentally slow. This is a medical word that spread to slang, and is today considered very insulting.

I used the word 'retards' to describe people who are capable of being racially abusive, so much so that they would even racially abuse our own players (not worse than racially abusing anyone by the way).  If you are upset by me insulting such people they I suggest you are the one with a problem.  There is NEVER an excuse for racism and if I insult somebody because they are then so be it.  You are of course entitled to your own opinions, but thankfully most of us have moved on from the 60's

The other way of thinking about it, is that it is a lot of hassle to raise issues of racial abuse and people are often stigmatised for it. Often when things like this are reported they are not taken seriously and we get into victim blaming. Like in this case were people are saying he's played the 'race card'.
He's done as much as reporting it to his manager and maybe felt that was enough.
I was there that day and he was totally incensed, I saw his reaction straight away. It is clear something was said to him when he was about 6 feet from the Town fans. Like you say, you know what a minority are like and it only takes one person to say something ridiculous.

Which proves the original point.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,

I think the onus is on the employer to take action in those scenarios Civvy. The man was allegedly racially abused in the course of his work and the employer has a duty of care.

Toto could have reported it to the police himself. But there are other issues connected with that (e.g. lack of confidence in the police themselves, likelihood of a prosecution). Though I note Headingly's point that that can often rebound on the complainant - but Toto did raise the issue publicly already, so he can't have been worried about fall-out from it. On the other hand, if the man's employer takes no action, what chance is there the police would treat it as credible?

From Toto's point of view, you can understand him thinking, 'if the club won't do anything about it and support me, what chance have I got (a black guy from Liverpool)' and just getting on with it until the end of the season then leaving at the first opportunity.

On the other hand did anyone come forward and state that they heard what was said (even if they did so anonymously for fear of retribution)?

I don't think you could claim that this incident nearly derailed our season. The record AFTER this game was WWWWWD. Before (heading back in time) it was: DWWLWW.
