So are you going to do this after every game mr viv?

I'm usually critical of him (fairly, i think) but tonight he did very well. The only two minor occasions i was worried was when he tried to smash into the player at the same time as getting the ball - both times the ball had already gone. Once the referee somehow didnt give a foul and the other was given as a foul. Only mentioning those because that's one the things i always point out that he needs to cut out (focusing too much on going through the player rather than just getting the ball).

Other thing worth mentioning is his crosses were better tonight. Hopefully that's something that's been worked on at Cheapside.

Either way we do do have 3 good full backs.

Played very very well, will provide very good competition for the wing back positions.

Agreed, even if S & H don't see him in their first plans it's reassuring to know he's there biting at their ankles.
You can guarentee we won't go a full season with both Hatton and Thomas fit anyway.

Thought he dealt with the quick players very well indeed and was excellent defensively tonight. One tiny criticism I have of him is his distribution going forward, he mostly plays a long ball forward rather than pass short and move. Apart from that I thought he was the best player on the pitch tonight.

Playing a long ball forward is not necessarily a criticism to be aimed at the player with the ball. Did he have simpler options? Did the simpler options shout for the ball? Did he have time on the ball? All of these can influence the choice he made at the time.

It's just something that I've noticed him doing when he picks the ball up in the right back area and more often than not it results in us losing the ball.

After last nights game i would play Wood ahead of Hatton untill Hatton starts to settle, not been too impressed with his start to life in a B&W shirt but hope he proves that he is a good player.

Haha nah as if i am i just thought he was excellent again and has really took to the challenge of having two new fresh full backs arriving and credit to him for that. I reckon the lad colbeck in front of him made such a difference to brads performance tonight as well giving him an easy option everytime he had the ball which imo made brads distribution look 100 times better as well. Oh and someone critisising him for smashing into that tackle in the 1st min?? couldnt disagree more to me that set the tone for the game and for what the rest of the lads should be doing and thats something brad does very well

Seems all on here have picked Hatton & Thomas will start and Wood will be on the bench. Who's given you this info?
I cant comment on the new guys because I wont see them until Sep but what I've seen of Wood(most of his games) I would start with him.
For all those on here who think hes just a clogger, bo1locks the lad is a good player at this level.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

He is still young and has potential.  I have criticised him before for his "recklessness" before that can damage the team performance.  I have also defended him strongly on here (when I think that he has been unfairly criticised).   He has is very determined, gives his all, happily plays in a number of positions when asked and has "battling qualities" that some players do not have or do not show. He never hides in a game. He is tough and resilient.

He may have upped his game to fend off new, strong competition for places.  Do not underestimate his desire and will to succeed.  He seems to have made a big stride last night.

Although different positions, era and quality, he has some of the battling qualities of "bad boys" Kenny Burns and Roy Keane.  Bradley could be a strong leader and captain in future years.  Let us hope that now he is a dad, he learns to curb some of the temper excesses and continues to develop.

If Woods is taking the gauntlet and throwing it down to both full backs, that can only be good for the team - no passengers !

Hopefully Southwell is thinking the same way and making it really hard to ignore him - looks to have gained body mass and more pitch savvy over the close season !

True but we've had to do without him for several games because of the reckless bookings he's picked up

Thats his only bad point ,though i,m certain that has come about only because of his over enthusiasm at times.  He was the best player on the field against Hull IMO.
He will probably start the early matches on the bench because of the two new full back signings, but his advantage is that he is a good utility player and can be used almost anywhere on the field.

I don't think Bradley wood should be competition, he's brilliant, always gives 100% and is actually a good footballer also. I remember watching him against Port Vale last season and the way he conducted himself was brilliant . Flying in to block nothing passes in the 92nd minute. I'd play Aswad and Wood as full backs. Hatton can bench warm and earn his opportunity ( like silk last season)

Don't misunderstand me I'm not anti Bradley Wood per se. I hope he has learned from last season. Competition can only be good. If he has learned from last season's indiscretions and can avoid so many bookings he will surely be in with a chance of being first choice.

I know the bookings are (obviously) a problem, but don't you think he'd be half the player without that, erm... enthusiasm?

Not a view I subscribe to I'm afraid. It shouldn't be beyond the wit of either the individual player or in the case of youngsters the coaching staff to channel that desire into something more positive. Over the last couple of years Brad has got away with it because of the lack of competition. It looks like he might not be so lucky this coming season. As I say in the interests of the lad himself and GTFC I hope he continues to perform in the way he looks to have started pre-season. I should add that I haven't seen him yet so wouldn't dream of putting forward an opinion about how he's doing. There does seem to be a lot of support for his efforts from those that have been....

if he can do it once why not again.I agree its a tough call as Bradley is not the most technical of players(even for this level) and where he makes up for it is the passion and commitment in which he plays with(something I admire a lot).If he can maintain this level of performance certainly warrants a starting place in my opinion. The problem is players like Bradley have to put in a good stint week in week out in order not to get dropped whereas others who have more ability (in the game in general)can afford to play with only 80% of  capacity and  still be effective for the team

wood is different to all our other players, he scares the attackers, made steve bruce swap wingers a few times !

Bradley will be the first to tell you he isnt the best footballer at the club, but he gives 100% no matter what the situation is.

downside to his game, is that if he gets booked in the first half, he scares the excrement out of me !
