If Bradley Wiggins holds on in the Pyrenees today and avoids disaster until Sunday he'll add the Tour de France title to his six Olympic medals including three Golds. Add to that his other numerous titles and achievements and would it make him the greatest modern British Sportsperson? If not who would you rank higher. I'm thinking post WWII for this so not WG Grace or CB Fry.

Much as I would love to go for Wiggins I think Steve Redgrave is probably right up there for his longetivity. Victoria Pendleton should be up there for having the best legs though!!

I think the only one that can match Wiggy is Redgrave.

Has to be Steve Redgrave for me, at the very least he is the greatest ever British Olympian. Still laugh remembering the interview with him after winning at the 96 games absolutely exhausted saying how he's retiring and if anyone ever sees him near a boat again they need to shoot him only to return 4 years later and win his last gold.

I can see the argument for Redgrave and I'd agree he's undoubtedly the greatest British Olympian, I just think Wiggins achievements will surpass it - three gold medals as a track cyclist and a Yellow Jersey would be the most amazing achievement.

Jane Tomlinson, before her death in 2007 she raised nearly £2 million through a lots of tough physical challenges.  Jane knew she was dying and achieved so much against all the odds.  She selflessly gave so much to so many she leaves a legacy as a truly inspirational person. The world is a sadder place without her.

Good call but I'd like to put Bobby Charlton's name in the frame. A true gentleman of the game of Association Football. 49 goals for his country-still a record (despite there being loads more international fixtures now). A truly world-wide name.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

I'd agree with that. Redgrave was the best over a long period of time but at one thing; Wiggins will become a great champion in 2 separate fields (I know they're both on a bike, but they're miles apart (literally)).

Someone in the production crew was told to put up a picture of Jackie Wilson, but instead put up a picture of darts player Jockie Wilson and Dexy's Midnight Runner's didn't noticed it.

Steve Redgrave is undoubtedly our greatest ever Olympian some great names mentioned Bob Chalton, ian Botham especially but what about Ellen MacArthur sailing solo around the world, surely one of the greatest achievements ever by a man or a women.

Sparky, that is class! not noticed it before.
As for Sportsperson it has to be Steve Redgrave for me, Wiggins has achieved a phenomenal feat and will continue to do so but Redgraves achievements will take alot of beating.

Andy Murray, been consistently winning tournaments and reaching at least the semis of the slams for about the last 8 years I think. Been on the SPOTY shortlist for at least 5 years on the trot.

I like Andy Murray but if he's the greatest British Sports Person of all time then we should give up now.

I read something the other day that said that while Wiggins and Redgrave have unbelievable accomplishments lots of people have won the Tour, lots have multiple Olympic medals etc but that Roger Bannister completely redefined what was possible in his field when he went under four minutes four a mile and that this makes him the Greatest ever Brit Sportsperson. Decent shout? Must be a decent bet for lighting the flame tonight if it isn't Redgrave?

Very good Abdul....made me laugh

I am actually half expecting Brave JT to take centre stage at the Olympics opening tonight - could be why they're keeping it such a close guarded secret as to who's the main man with the torch

Pretty hard to compare such vastly differing sports. But the shouts for Bannister, Redgrave & Wiggins are pretty compelling. As an outside bet though, whatabout the sailor, Ben Ainslie? Not as heralded but he must be on the way to being the most successful Brit of all time?

There's a crooked street in Grimsby Town
It's a well worn path I've travelled down
Now there's ruin in my name, I wish i'd never got off the train
And I wish I'd listened to the words you said....

Don't go down to Freeman Street
You'll be lost and never found
You can never turn around
Don't go down to Freeman Street
