I've finally found this on youtube and am including it for those who were at BP on this day, and those who weren't. It is the most blatant example ever of a clear, uncontestable penalty not being given by an incompetent and cheating referee in a crucial home game. To those who have said, in recent years, that they've just witnessed the worst ever referee performance at BP, I refer you to this footage from more than 20 years ago. I remember the game vividly and will be honest and say that I was livid for weeks afterwards. In fact, months. Just watching it again now makes my blood boil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfDwh1rbq28

Blast from the past that one. Shocking decision.
But probably not as bad as that last minute handball against Lincoln 2 years ago.

That was bad, but nothing has come close to this for me. Cunnington was assaulted from behind.

Haha Thats so bad its funny. Im too young to remember that, thankfully. Shocking decision. Maybe the ref had afew quid on a Bolton win.

| Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong Update: I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly |

Before I even click the link, I'm guessing it was against Bolton, when I think, Shaun Cunnington was brought down? Think it ended 0-1 to Bolton.

If Newport win it b4 heir vist to BP, I will sit in The Osmond dressed as Little Bo-Peep for the match against them!

We went up at the end of the season though, so in the end it didn't matter.

I was at that game and remember how depressing it was at the time - seeing it again makes me annoyed even now. Still don't think Gally should have got the red card tho!! Under today's rules their player would no longer be interfering in play.

| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Was the ref called Brian Hill? I seem to remember the linesman waving his flag when Cunnington was brought down but the ref just ignored him. Git.

Correct on all accounts - Brian Hill was the No1 ref in the country at the time and I clearly recall the linesman flagging. He didnt even give it a quick wave he had it up (the flag that is) for ages and Hill just carried on waving at him I was sat in the findus on the barriers at the front in pefect line of the tackle (as was the linesman - To this day i dont think i have seen a more clear cut foul not given.

Worst non penalty "decision" I've ever seen was at home to Swindon in our promotion season of 1980
They were in the mix for going up and we had a shot that one of their defenders dived full length to turn around the post for remarkably a corner
The ref must have thought it was their goalkeeper flying through the air....fortunately justice was done as we scored from the resulting corner to take the lead but had they gone on to get a point or even win it, that would have proved to have been one of the worst decisions ever

Thank you for bringing this shocking incident back to me I was there but had erased it from my memory, although seeing it again has got steaming about the useless officials that have appeared at BP throughout the decades I have followed the Mariners.

I, too, knew exactly which incident i would be. I was only 10 at the time, but for a long time afterwards I could remember what happened clearly. Am I correct in thinking they finished below us in the play-offs, in 4th, and lost to Tranmere? I think we followed Cambridge and Southend up. Wow, how times have changed.

Yep, we went up on goal difference (both 83 points, us +32, them a paltry +14).

brian hill not giving a foul and a red card still upsets me to this day, i remember going crazy in the main stand and always gave brian hill plenty of stick from that day onwards. much like i do with that other* referring helmet, clattenburg
*although there's plenty more too, like that tosser who reffed one of the many 0-1 defeats at home to darlo, can't remember his name though

Yep we beat Exeter in the final match of the season to finish above Bolton on goal difference. It just shows what effect that decision - probably the worst I can remember in well over sixty years at BP - might have had on our season.
It was only the week before that Exeter game that we were all locked in at Stoke for over half an hour following their pitch invasion.
Plenty going on in them days !
But weren't they great times.

I ended up thinking about Brian Hill during a boring bit at work today (this thread has brought back some memories). Either later that same season, or possibly the next season I remember Brian Hill reffing at BP again for a night match. It was not a league game as me and my dad were stood in the Lower Findus, we had season tickets in the Main Stand. It was probably the Anglo-Italian cup or some such. Anyways, when the ref was announced as Brian Hill just before the kick off there was a lot of groans from the fans. After the coin toss, one of the linesman started making his way over to in front of where me and my dad were stood. My dad, taking me by surprise, shouted out to the lino "Watch yourself linesman, this referee will just ignore you!". I remember nothing about the match, who Town were playing or what the score was but in the second half one of the opposition players was miles offside. Duly the linesman stopped and put his flag in the air and waited for our old chum Hill to blow his whistle however the whistle never came. Cue lots of angry shouting from Town fans trying to get Hill's attention but he never once looked across. The attack must've come to goal kick because all I remember then is the linesman running back towards the halfway line and as he passed my dad shouted "Told you so!" and the linesman just turned to my dad as he ran and gave what I can best describe as a knowing look.
On a side note, another random memory. One of the best bits of abuse I've ever heard towards a ref was around that period. A boy in the Main Stand, probably only 6 or 7 years old, took a dislike to a refereeing decision and shouted "Referee you b1tch!". I've never since heard a better criticism of a ref.
