Following on from the favourite films thread.  I am finding TV shows are better than the films lately, especially the Amercan shows.

Currently watching.. Luck, Homeland, and Alcatraz.

Loved.. 24, Lost and The Wire.

Waiting for the next series of Walking Dead and The Game of Thrones.

Anybody watching anything good lately?

Being Human is awesome but can't think of anything else good that's on at the minute.
New series of Peep Show starts soon though, which is quality as well.

Friday Night Lights is one of my favourites, and starts on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday.
The Borgias is brilliant, as is Entourage and The Wire.
Really liked the first series of Mad Dogs, but think the 2nd is not as good.

The Wire - naturally, Mad Men, The Killing (Danish) and Spirals: latter two, both immensely worth it but for subtitle-willing only.

Comfortably the best programme around right now: Breaking Bad. Hard to discern anything that happens yet superb television.

Take note of my reputation and ignore; I evidently talk nonsense.

Just about the whole of my TV viewing these days is stuff from American studios like HBO,Showtime,AMC and a couple of others.

Breaking Bad is consistently excellent.

Walking Dead, which resumes tonight in the US after a mid season break.

Hell on Wheels is good, also in a mid season break.

True Blood.

Dexter.

Boardwalk Empire.

Sons Of Anarchy.

There are loads of really good series out there, past and present,if you have a look.Discovering new ones all the time.I stream them through my 'puter to my TV and hardly watch on air broadcasts anymore.

I didn't realise Walking Dead was back on, cheers for that.

Anyone watched Suits yet?  It's quite good.

Did anyone else see Generation Kill, by the writers of the Wire?  Only 7 episodes, I think because it was too close to the truth for Americans.

Like Ginny, I think the American shows are far better than anything from the UK, unless someone knows different.

Yeah,Generation Kill was very good and probably too realistic for American sensibilities.

Another series in the same vein is 'Over There' if you can track it down. Not as good as GK,but worth a watch.

If you like spooky stuff,American Horor Story is meant to be good. Not seen it myself yet but heard good things.

Hustle is quality, gutted it's finishing but they were always going to start running out of ideas sooner or later. This series has been good, but there was a severe lack of variation in the story lines & was a little too formulaic. Defintely the right time to end it imo.

I've seen the 1st 3 and its not bad, got great reviews.  Anything with Connie Britton in gets my vote.  Also watch Once Upon A Time, the concept sounds so gay, but it's not bad at all and Robert Carlsile is superb, he steals every scene he's in.

10 O'Clock Live is back on, which I quite enjoy. Three good comedians and 1 properly fit woman is an attraction in itself, but also programmes like this and HIGNFY etc are the only way I know what's going on in the world. Oh - except for twit of the week on here!

The Wire was the best thing I've seen in a long while. Watched Birdsong, wasn't a great fan of it but then usually, things from a book don't tend to turn out that great (except Band of Brothers!). Never really liked Boardwalk Empire despite loving prohibition era American history, I just really couldn't get into it.

Agree with you about The Wire and loved The Sopranos as well. Looking forward to the next series of Mad Men and just started Friday Night Lights which I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy. Sky Atlantic are showing the whole of Seinfeld from the beginning so I'm all over that but think Curb Your Enthusiasm is probably the funniest thing ever made.

I actually really enjoyed Birdsong though I know lots didn't. I've never read it so maybe that helped. Band Of Brothers was obviously an amazing series - my wife actually worked on it though so it's pretty difficult to watch without her interrupting with various anecdotes!

Dont know if it has been mentioned yet but if you like The Wire, The Shield etc then I would highly reccomend the US prison drama Oz, great storys if very brutal and the characters are brilliant. You can pick up each series for under a tenner now too.

Watched all 12 episodes of Homeland.  My new favourite.  I switched off Walking Dead half way through, very disappointed having waited 3 months for its return.  I am sure it will get better.

Oz was a great series, highly recommended.  Luck is seriously frustrating, very hard to understand the dialogue.  Constantly rewinding scenes, but I do like Dustin Hoffman.

Did anyone see Jericho?  Only made two series, very good.

QI is always great, and Big Bang Theory too.

Ok, I am off to watch a couple of episodes of Over There, see what it is like.

As I said, TV is far better than movies at the moment.

Watched the first episodes of Friday Night Lights, Luck and Homeland last week. First impressions:

Friday Night Lights seems fairly light but pretty sure I'll enjoy it.
Luck seems like one to persevere with rather than an instant 'I love it'.
Homeland I enjoyed most out of the three and am already looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Friday Night Lights is really good. Especially the first season.

Agree about the other two. Thought Homeland was brilliant.

Doesnt look good for 'Alcatraz', viewers dropping off big time(acutally gone lower than Terra Nova, which was so bad).  The River is interesting and worth watching, but Touch is the one for me i think, I so enjoyed the pilot and finally  a series that has me thinking while watching.  Luck I was so looking forward too (I love horse racing) but i was bored through the whole of the pilot, really hope it picks up, it has too with the writers and cast it has.

I've read a lot of stuff saying that Luck has to be persevered with - get through the first 3 or 4 episodes and it all comes together. Apparently they sent critics the first 5 or 6 episodes because they knew they would get bad reviews on the pilot alone. As you say. with its pedigree it has to be good doesn't it?

Brilliant quirky comedy that but just seemed to get stuck in the bowels of the TV scehdules unfortunately. Im sure I read somewhere that there is a new series being made and a film.

They showed the lot recently on FX - two or three a week. Absolutely loved it and couldn't believe I'd missed it first and probably second time round.

Bit of a cheat this as it's over 20 years old, but they are currently repeating it on BBC4, so... The Singing Detective. Absolute quality.

I enjoyed the first episode of Homeland, but US drama series do tend to throw everything into the pilot in order to get commissioned, the trick is to sustain the quality and many seem to lose their way after a few episodes. Hopefully this will be the exception, but I'll reserve judgement for a bit.

You need to see episode 2 or 3 of the latest series, an episode which has Ricky Gervais in it, probably one of the best ones ever, they work together so well!

Will look forward to that Bullitt. Watched 3 or 4 eps from season 5 yesterday, the one's with Ben Stiller in and that blind man. Decided I'm going to work my way through the rest up to the new ones. Is Cheryl back in the new ones? Quite fancy her, as a milf type.

I thought the best thing about this series apart from the sex scenes was that not for one minute did i think of Frasier while watching it.  Kelsey Grammer was superb.

How can anyone like The Big Bang Theory? It's what I imagine was on in the waiting room for victims of the holocaust. They played "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 just before they turned the taps on.

It's one of the few comedies of recent times that consistently makes me lol. It's lolly.
Having said that, the American-sitcommyness of it does really grate on me at times - the applause after individual lines (that weren't even that good), and the cheering and whooping when someone special enters etc etc.

Ricky gervais said writing the American office was harder because they had to dumb it down and make it more obvious in places...

Big bang theory is brilliant and I love how I met your mother too.

I love the two and a half men episodes with Charlie sheen too.
