Not sure if this is intended to be funny or clever - but it's neither.

Let it go...move on.

She gets on my mammaries, then again she’s no different to any pundit in that she’s right up herself, give me Roy Keane every week.

Did sound like he had a sore throat yesterday to be honest.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

In fairness Jobi McAnuff was an excellent pundit at Southampton.  Genuinely pleased for us and top analysis on the key moments.

For me I  think Eniola Aluko is the better pundit over Alex Scott. Comes across as less forced and more natural. Really like her style.

Really, you don't know?  The guy makes unwarranted comments re illegal immigrants, but was quite happy to take thousands of pounds work in a country whose human rights stance is abysmal.  You can't have it both ways.  Anyway, we don't need this to be turned into a political thread just because I am pleased a certain man is not involved today, but then, there are always some idiots who like to stir things up.  No more comments from me, it's QF day.

I think you’re the idiot stirring things up, as you’ve misused and misunderstood the term ‘illegal immigrants’ and have also resorted to an insult, and then staked your claim to a right to an opinion but say his opinion is ‘unwarranted’.

I did get my facts right. You called him an ‘@rseh0le’. Try to keep up with your own nonsense. Then you showed you don’t understand the issues by referring to ‘illegal immigrants’. You’re stupid, and you’ve made yourself look stupid by being wrong.

How is you not liking Lineker because he sticks up for immigrants factual?  If you don't like his punditry or his presence on the programme, that's fine but because he sticks up for other humans that you don't appear to value is a little immature. And what's his salary got to do with it?   It's not factual, it's an opinion.

Yes I did, cos he is an anus, he was quite happy to take money to work in that vile country Qatar, whose record of abusing human rights is well known, and I do know what an illegal immigrant is, does he?  And I suppose he is quite happy for hundreds of them coming into this country by boat or lorries, to get free handouts from the Government while hundreds of Veterans
have to sleep rough on our streets because there is no where for them to live.

So it's not factual that he got paid 1.6M to work in Qatar, whose record of abuse of human rights is well known?  That didn't seem to bother him too much, did it?

If you had ever ventured out and worked with the homeless you would appreciate it is much more complex than lack of resources, mental health issues and substance abuse play a large factor. Additionally a large proportion of the homeless are not ex-servicemen a far larger proportion are ex-care-leavers who have been totally let down by the so called care system. But don't let the facts spoil a good prejudice.

I think Alex Scott is a good presenter and pundit. She's making a success of presenting after years of being a guest, good on her. Don't really see why anyone would dislike her (well, I can think of two reasons, but they've got nothing to do with her ability to do the job).

Some people will probably disagree but I actually think Alex Scott was a better presenter for us than Gary Lineker would have been.

I find Alex Scott to be a very good presenter and pundit.

I’ve not seen the footage yet, but I think she’s useless. Gabby Logan is excellent, though, so it’s not a sexism thing, in general I like the female presenters, just not her very much.

But those female commentators on the BBC highlights, they are unwatchable, with their high pitched screeching.

I thought Alex Scott did a cracking job tbh

However, she has a long way to go to topple the magnificent Lauren Jenkins off her perch though, who most of you won't know because it's welsh egg-chasing involved.  She doesn't just give friendly chat hosting but really, really knows the game and took the WRU chief to task the other week about contract details.

Say you're a xenophobic Gammon without actually saying it.

So you don't know me, if you did, you would know that what you just posted is rubbish.  Don't you, and all the others posting here find it strange that I get called all sorts of names because my OP said nothing more than the fact I was pleased Lineker wasn't taking part in MotD on Sunday?  Also, not one of them had anything to say about the ÂŁ1.6M he got for work he did in Qatar.

Mate stop leaving yourself so open, you don’t always have to respond, sometimes you are a bit of a tap in for click bait, surely you can’t enjoy being on here at times like this.

I appreciate what you are saying, but when people decide to gang up on me just because I said I was pleased Lineker wasn't doing the Motd  Sunday, a harmless comment, then I will respond.  Then of course the usual idiots pile on to make something bigger out of it than what it really is.

After quickly flying past the pathetic comments by two individuals on this thread.......

.... I thought Alex Scott was really good today, and Danny Murphy too,

......... but who was the other one who couldn't even remember the teams we had already beaten. He let the team down really

He was Glen Murray, former Brighton player

Don't you feel a bit silly?
You didn’t do that - you called him an ‘ar$ehole’’; then you said his opinion was ‘unwarranted’ (you’re entitled to yours, but he’s not entitled to his) and then you showed you don’t understand the issues by referring to ‘illegal immigrants’.

As a point of fact….it is NOT illegal for anyone to arrive anywhere by any means. Once they’ve arrived, it is only then possible to assess their status, legal or otherwise after they have been ‘processed’. Not really a word I like when it comes to humans. So, rather than playing the victim, denouncing other people’s right to an opinion whilst digging yourself a hole with your ill informed view, you’d be better off opening your mind and indulging in some research and introspection.

I’m responding to my own post here, which might be a sign of insanity maybe, but having now watched a good chunk of the game I will admit she’s grown on me a little. I thought she did quite well, she’s obviously improving.

And yes, Danny Murphy is good, but I’ve heard him for years on Talksport and he’s always decent.

You bring the majority of it on yourself.

You state an opinion, then often say it’s a fact. If people disagree or offer an alternative view, you then become aggressive. Despite your username, not everything is black and white.

Lineker:

Al Jazeera:

Yes, it’s being reported (source: Mail / Express) that Lineker was paid c.£1.6m for working in London for Al Jazeera who are financed by the Qatari state. This related to the Champions League coverage (2009-2013).

Now, Qatar weren’t awarded the WC until Dec 2010. The Guardian, never slow to sniff out the left wing angle / common decency (delete as applicable), spent the following few years concentrating on the Russia WC, the summer heat in Qatar and the corruption associated with both the 2018 and 2022 bidding process.

It wasn’t until 2016 that Amnesty International, The Guardian etc were exposing human rights abuse. There was some discussion in the UK in 2010-2013 on whether LBGT fans would be able to travel (I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities: Blatter 2010) but the focus when Lineker was working for Al Jazeera was on the summer heat and the scheduling.

Could Lineker have done more homework? Possibly. But it’s certainly not as bad as Beckham, Gary Neville etc continuing to join in the sports washing in 2022.

Should Lineker do a Trevelyan family and pay reparations to Nepalese and other migrant workers? Not for me Clive.

IR35:
Grey area with the outcome of the cases dependent on the interpretation of the legislation.
The BBC encouraged some celebrities to use personal service companies (e.g.Christa Ackroyd).
Is Lorraine Kelly more of a ‘theatrical artist’ than Gary Lineker?

Tax avoidance schemes:
This is the worst thing that Lineker has done (that we know of). Not an excuse but there were a lot of celebrities (Beckham (again), Barlow, Schofield, Ant & Dec…the list goes on) using the film and musician loss tax avoidance schemes in the 2000s.  Lineker knew exactly what he was doing. Although he has repaid the tax, with interest and penalties, I can understand why people think it’s hypocritical for Lineker to tweet some (but not all) of the stuff he does.

Conclusion:

The Al Jazeera stuff is a bit of a non-story.

Suggesting the UK Govt were using language similar to 1930s Germany - he had a point, on the language aspect, whatever our views on migration or the policy itself.

IR35 - interpretation of the law. Wider problem than just Gary Lineker

Film loss schemes (tax avoidance) - this is the worst bit by far.

Sorry but the IR35 issue wasn’t  a case of being pushed into it by the employer . The earnings were routed through a partnership with his ex wife even though the contracts were solely with him .

The contracts (plural) were between the Gary Lineker Media partnership and multiple unrelated, third-party companies.

None of us know what services Ms.Bux provided to that partnership but it’s not illegal for her to be a partner. There are doubtless many posters on here who have spouses on the payroll / shareholders / partners of their entity. We also don’t know what profit share or income she was receiving from the partnership.

However, HMRC have not challenged Ms.Bux’s involvement in the partnership.

The Tribunal were asked to rule on ‘correctly outside IR35’ vs ‘wrongly treated as outside IR35’ based on the services the partnership was providing to third parties.

If a person has multiple contracts with different companies, there is a degree of subjectivity into whether the entity they are using is operating within IR35 or not.

Based on the level of control the BBC have decided they want over Lineker now, it would be difficult to argue that he isn’t operating as an employee in 2023. But HMRC were ruling on 2013-2018 in what now seems like the soft, cuddly world of pre-Covid Cameron.

This case is certainly the soft side of tax avoidance. The opposite of film tax credit schemes and being political donor, Chancellor or PM, when it’s in your interests to not close the loopholes on even more lucrative methods of tax avoidance (or open new ones in the case of pension schemes and avoiding IHT).

Anyway, I’m a PAYE compliant, salaryman so I say tax the fückers to büggery.

Is that a fact?

How do you know it’s a fact?

Do you have proof?

In fairness Jobi McAnuff was an excellent pundit at Southampton.  Genuinely pleased for us and top analysis on the key moments.

I’d agree with that to be fair, I think Beckford is ok too.

You are not quite right here about multiple contracts with multiple companies , it is driven by the individual contracts.
Also Lineker’s 2012 and earlier shenanigans were known at the time as being on the edge and although he was contrite and apologetic he clearly knew what he was doing and , in my opinion, has been a hypocrite here. I would never defend this government but Linekar’s tax dealings were not dissimilar.
A champagne socialist for me.

What’s a ‘champagne socialist’?

What’s a ‘champagne socialist’?

Dictionary:

"a person who espouses socialist ideals while enjoying a wealthy and luxurious lifestyle."

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

It's an interesting entity. You could build a very solid case to support the theory that there would be no Labour movement without there being wealthy people espousing Socialist ideals. Education of the working classes in the 19th century was pretty dependent on the generosity of benefactors and philanthropists. It quite simply wasnt beneficial for the ruling class to educate the masses. The likes of Wilberforce, Jonas Salt, Cadbury and Lever didn't live in back to back terraced houses but believed in using their fortunes for the benefit of all.
Without the intellectual wing of the early Labour movement there would have been no means of disseminating the principles on which the modern Socialist ethos is based. Without the intervention of "champagne socialists" it isn't stretching a point to say that there would have been no suffragette movement.
One of the people who have had the biggest effect on my political beliefs Tony Benn was a hereditary peer who had to renounce his birthright to be able to serve the people in the best way he could.
There are countless similar examples to show its not about wealth its about what you do with it.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

Of course, I am aware of the term and already knew what it meant - it was more about trying to get at the lazy label used in this thread. It would probably require some cogent definition of socialism, which I doubt the person who used the term could share, and also that Gary Linekar would actually identify himself as a ‘socialist’. I’m not aware that he has.

He frequently criticises this appalling government, that’s true - but anyone with eyes and ears could do that every day, several times a day. What he did recently was espouse a ‘humanitarian’ notion, and declare his opposition to an illegal policy, drawing a parallel with language from another historical period. That doesn’t make him a ‘socialist’, champagne or other.

The right wing client media in this country throw these terms about and they become received ideas that people too lazy or stupid to do their own political thinking then adopt as their view and parrot it. As a few have found out - you apply one minute’s worth of scrutiny to it, and it collapses hopelessly.
When that happens, they cry foul, throw a few insults about, then play victim, or try to shut it down. It’s pitiful.

Well, FTT have ruled in favour of Lineker on the IR35 appeal on the grounds of ‘services having been provided under contracts directly between Mr Lineker and the BBC / BT Sport as he signed each contract as principal in respect of his own services’.

But nobody will probably read this because it’s being moved to non-football; perish the thought of free speech and intellectual enlightenment.

sodomist off with your factual information-it will never catch on.
Did you not get the memo that we live in an age in which belief is much more important than, erm…you know…facts!

Culture wars.

He's rich and working class, so he is a target.

Don't bother calling out the real villains who are profiteering and dodging their dues in the shadows. Just point at other people to keep the spotlight away.
