True. I think the number of subs allowed now is probably negating that a little. Fresh legs for the defensive team plus you can make more tactical fouls as you can sub off more players on a yellow card.

That’s why I fancy Spain. They really should have won the Euros but, like England, they got Italicised. Lack of a top quality striker might hurt them and their defence is ropy but they arguably have the best midfield.


Only one who springs to mind is Van Dijk and he's a slightly diminished force post-ACL recovery.

I take back the ‘arguably’ about Spain’s midfield.

It’s so good they can play the best DM in the world at CB.

I’m not a greedy man but I wish either Gavi or Pedri were English…or fancied a stint in L2 under Hurst and Doig.

It’s such a shame that this is going to be the final 32 team World Cup.

When you see how poor Iran, Qatar & Australia are it’s hard to justify Asia going from 4.5 teams in the World Cup to 8.33. And the same with Costa Rica & North America going from 3.5 teams to 6.66.

The quality isn’t there to justify the extra spots. And 48 teams will make the groups stage a horrible mess.

Forgot about that and you are probably correct ….. but it might also produce the type of result Germany and Argentina have suffered

The 78 Cup was the best format when they had two group stages. Having knockout from 32 teams is a joke. The group stage will have lots of meaningless games and all the small nations will play for penalties.
