An inspiration.

It's thanks to Sir Tom we have a country to live in, protecting the nation from the Nazi's. Thankfully Sir Tom survived WW2 while others in their late teens/early twenties died for us.

Sir Tom then showed the nation how in your late ninety's to raise £millions for the NHS. An inspiration for our younger generation of today.

On a very sad note I have not the words to describe my contempt for the person who gave KindstonMariner a X. Have some guts to print your name and say why Sir Tom is not an INSPIARTION.

A great achievement last year raising all the money he did and of course his war service.

Also managed to get a distraction knighthood and all of this mourning (a minute’s silence at PMQs - before they tagged the other 108k+ deaths on it). Half expecting BoZo to open the Covid briefing tonight that he’s getting a Trafalgar Square statue and four days national mourning. I wonder what news is going to break while it’s all going on 🤔

Don’t know why the bozos red-crossed your post Humbo. Maybe they know something about Capt Tom that we don’t but they don’t want to share it.

Probably around thoughts similar to this post from elsewhere:

"At a 100, he had better innings than most of us will ever experience. His charity fundraiser last year was remarkable and he should be praised for this.

However, the blind ignorance shown by both him and his family to holiday during the worst pandemic in modern times is both baffling and frustrating. As someone who campaigned to support the NHS, surely people can see the hypocrisy in such a decision and the resulting burden it has caused upon his return.

It is all well and good to try and paint this in the light of ‘at his age you’d think intercourse it.’ Truth be told however, many would likely take the morale high ground and turn down this holiday, heck, even just to show support for the rest of the nation.

Reading the comments I was made aware of 101 year old lady doing 101 laps of her local park. It’s sad this wasn’t promoted further but it shows there was true meaning behind her fundraiser. Captain Tom, I feel was more an idea brought about by his family than himself, there is a stark difference between a woman walking her local park and a man doing laps of his impressive, huge garden."

Not sure anyone denies that it was a touching thing to do and should be applauded but this has caused a fantastic distraction for the government and has once again swerved people away from the fact the NHS is chronically underfunded.

I wasn’t aware of the holiday but I noticed initially some media outlets tried to run a sort of shock story that he hadn’t had a vaccine...then it became clear why.

I’m unsure why this chaos efforts were celebrated more than say the lady walking round her park but I guess nobody is really arsed.

It’s always sad when someone dies, no matter what the situation.

Judging by the handful of a busy Tesco’s clapping people either didn’t know, didn’t care or have just become numb to everything...

There are some sad people on here if you have to find a way of diminishing the efforts of a 100-year-old war veteran and inspiration to many in these sad times.

I suppose he was too "conservative" for some people to stomach. A lovely man, a loving family and so middle class -  too much to bear for our SJW's.

It is possible to applaud his efforts and realise that he’s been used as a distraction a few times. For anyone capable of thinking for themselves.

Seriously, what is wrong with you? The bloke is dead and you’re using him to carry on your odd, spiteful, deranged campaign against people who don’t share your opinions. You have some very deep seated personal issues which need addressing.

I don’t think anyone’s diminished what he’s done, have they? Its not impossible to say that his efforts deserve acclaim, but also that the govt could and should have done more to keep him (and others) alive.

For such a supposed free speech advocate, you do have a touch of the Thought Police about you.

Ah yes of course. The millions of ordinary people who took him to their hearts, who donated to the cause, that had street party celebrations for his birthday and mourned his passing was some enormous conspiracy theory by government strategists to distract us from their mistakes.

That is not thinking for yourself, it is just plain bonkers.

It’s potentially not OK to use the still warm corpse of a 100-year-old to satisfy your quest for likes on the internet. Bizarre behaviour from someone rapidly losing touch with reality.

To give this perspective the average life expectancy of someone living in the UK is 81 😉.

Very odd to assume that folk critical of the exploitative use of this mans great effort are diminishing what he achieved or did.

Thanks Stadium. I was not aware of the holiday. Just shows no one is perfect. Very bad move considering his honour.

I wasn’t aware of the 101 year old woman either.

I don’t think we should let the fact that the government used his story as a distraction tool get in the way of appreciation for his efforts and attitude. That would be like not honouring key workers because the government used the weekly clap to cover its lack f real support for key workers over the years.

Hold on this was early December like many people lucky enough to fly away for a Xmas break he broke no covid rules! Also the trip was a gift from BA to say thank you for his efforts, what’s the problem?
By all accounts Barbados was on his bucket list and at 100 years old he would’ve known there was a good chance this would be his last.

So now I’m thinking what kind of person would attack one of our last WW2 veterans, someone who raised so much for the NHS, for wanting to enjoy his remaining time on Earth?

Well it wasn’t hard or too surprising to find the usual spiteful hateful woke left on social media at the the fore, even a (black) man of the left wing cloth called him a cult of white British nationalism! These warfare leftists hate our skin colour, history, culture and even our proud war hero’s, there is no reasoning with them they are sick and totally disgust me.

Strange response so just  to clarify:

No one said he had broken the Covid regulations, diminished the efforts of a 100-year-old war veteran or even mentioned the trip was a gift from BA.

The comment which was posted was from elsewhere as stated & was to explain different views on the matter.

Try reading the comment in its entirely, especially the first line:
"At a 100, he had better innings than most of us will ever experience. His charity fundraiser last year was remarkable and he should be praised for this"

Many thanks for your final paragraph however.

There always a ‘But’ with you people, he was never going to get the full respect was he, to middle class, patriotic and white. The thought of anyone going to Barbados in December must be mental torture for socialist’s to even contemplate.

If you’d read what Stadium wrote properly you’d realise no one in this board was being spiteful about Capt Ton. But you can’t stand to miss any opportunity to go off on a rant about the ‘woke left wing media’.

Spewing forth bile like you’ve done is deeply disrespectful to someone you regard as a hero.

I think it’s past your bed time what you even on about ‘left wing media’!
You started this thread paying tribute and rightly so to a great man fair play.
But certain people couldn’t help bringing him down, I know it wasn’t Stadium’s own words but even so did he really need to re-quote basically calling Tom an hypocrite? This is spewing bile  totally and utterly disrespectful!

And now resident Corbynista Ska feels the need to mock him and his supporters are you going to have a go at him?

Ska isn’t mocking him. You really must learn to read properly.

Stadium’s post wasn’t in the least disrespectful to anyone. He merely pointed out, in a calm respectful way, there are other perspectives on the subject. If you want to quash free speech perhaps you would have been supporting the side Capt Tom fought against in the War.

Having read the thread I cannot see anyone bringing down Sir Tom, he was used as a distraction, maybe you cannot see that, there have been many helping out the NHS some older than Tom some younger, there was a reason he was chosen to be in the spotlight and being ex military had a lot to do with it, I am not trying to belittle his walking around his substantial garden, but he was fit enough to jump on a plane at the first opportunity when international travel is the main spread of COVID. A random Caribbean island does seem rather strange bucket list item but I hope he enjoyed it, however if any Government minister had done the same they would be in very hot water.
It’s more than a little embarrassing that our NHS needs 100 year old people putting themselves through stress to raise funds.

Gentlemen I think the point of starting this thread was out of respect for Sir Tom. I do realise that all have different political views and when both sides of Parliament have a minutes silence in his memory it shows that both blue and red can come together. Indeed all had praise for Sir Tom.

Some forumites questioned why Sir Tom which they had right to do. To answer that as simply as, I could be he was one of the last of the few. If it wasn't for him and his deceased colleagues be their death as elderly or late teens/early20's in WW2 you may have not been able to have the freedom you have today.

Sir Tom not only raised £million's for the NHS but inspired others of all ages to do the same. It is not only his courage but inspiration that was being honoured. Let us not forget the Queen was also touched by him as well.

The first people to do something are always remembered while others who after them may do better things, it is the originator who gets the praise. Sir Frank Whittle and the Jet engine, Alan Turing and staff worlds first computer come to mind.

So please put your differences aside for this post. Have some dignity and respect.

The facts are that the initial post was in tribute to Tom a WW2 Veteran who had done raised millions for the NHS and had just died, and I contributed with my own tribute. So was it really necessary to add alternative but negative views on him so soon after his death?

I’m all for free speech but sometimes there’s a time and a place it’s called respect! I take your point on how he was selected as well as the other people that maybe had done more and were over looked, if I’m honest I’m even against all this clapping nonsense for him, but some of the negativity is based on class almost reverse snobbery and for me it’s feels spiteful. Like I say the original post was in tribute if you couldn’t say anything nice they could of just put RIP and moved on, saved all this for another time.

Both sides of parliament are cut from very similar cloth, woe betide anyone who speaks anything but the perceived patriotic line on this , they would be slaughtered by the press. No one is trying to belittle Toms effort’s but do we really want to be a country where the health service relies on donations ?
The publicity was whipped up for him for a reason, it does not make his effort less worthy, you seem to want to take offence were there is non intended, people pointing out the obviousness of the distraction seems to upset you. Just take a step back and understand not everyone swallows the same news line agenda without question and ask yourself why some can say well done that man without going over the top

Once again a most bizarre reaction??
You seem to be attempting to censor what a person can post in this thread when it's perfectly within the rules.
The facts within were correct and it was a genuine post of another view on the subject.

Why on earth you would interept that as "spewing bile totally and utterly disrespectful!" Is most odd.

I’m all for free speech except for when I’m not? Cannot see anyone anywhere in this thread saying anything bad about Tom, but you want something to be angry and righteous about.

Well maybe you should  attempt to show some too?
There has been some interesting points raised around it in this thread which the media has managed to totally overlook.
You are seem to be a champion for free speech but only on certain terms??

Seriously why would you want to shoehorn in a critical post about Tom on a thread where people were just paying their respects to him after he had just died. Don’t you think this was a bit ‘odd’ old boy?

When I think about why you would feel the urge to offer a negative slant all I can think is that, this was also your view and you put in there on the pretence of ‘just an innocent alternative view’ very weasely coward like I must say.

Like many posters have already stated, nothing was wrong with the quoted comment.
It also informed several about the vacation which wasn't common knowledge to some.
Try reading the post again,it was an possible explanation to the fact of somebody "red crossing" an earlier post.

As for your second point,it's rather silly.
In fact delusional.

Good thread this, some absolutely normal and definitely not hysterical reactions from the usual suspects. Sounds like some of you couldn’t wait for him to die just so you could use it as an excuse to have a go at the woke brigade. Seek help.
