Hang on a second. The players I'd want rid of are mainly Slade's signings. Hooper, Kelly and possibly Cardwell and definitely one more winger depending on how Woolford does, I will decide who needs to go because we are overloaded in that area. I'm sure 3 + Wright would have been sufficient

It is Slade's opinion that counts though isn't it? He is stuck with players he doesn't fancy (and nobody else does by the look of it).

You're not wrong.

So.. leaving 22 fit senior players, you would think that there would be two players for every position if it was a balanced squad.

Defensively we've only got six players for four positions and three of them are older than or around thirty five. Even the three out injured aren't defenders, so there's no excuse there either and when fit leaves us more unbalanced than ever.

Just don't know what RS is thinking when it comes to the balance of squad never mind the profile or quality of some of the signings.

And all this come for a trial business seems desperate. You'd have thought RS would have had clearly defined targets in mind rather than not knowing and seeing how good they are on the training ground, especially as he can only test them against the players we have already got and in countless soft friendlies we had, rather than in match situations against better calibre opponents.

I'm even more disillusioned than ever with things at the club but still hope this nasty gut feeling I've got is completely wrong..

He would have had his number one targets for sure, but we are not willing to pay enough to get them here.

If you look at some of RS targets, the young left-back from Liverpool (Sam somebody) has gone on a 2 year deal to Blackburn. Young striker from Notts Forest (Tyler Walker) gets to score the winner at Newcastle.

RS may have set his sights high, but we can see that he has had to take lower options. Its not always about price, but geography and other career factors come in to play.

Lots of people bitching about budgets and spending more but then advocating this boycott that not only exposes the club to a loss on gate receipts v stadium costs but also in prize money. But obviously that's with the clubs "long term future" in mind hey ...

Don't forget Wright is also on the books - out on loan but can be recalled if necessary. I know he played some pre-season games at full-back, but he's another winger.

So, we've got three full-backs to cover 2 positions. Apparently Woolford can also play at left-back if required and, I suppose, Keeble or one of the other defenders might be able to cover as well.

Three centre-backs plus Keeble to cover 2 positions. A little bit thin on the ground there, perhaps? Depends on whether Keeble can step up to the task.

The biggest overload is still in central midfield where we have 9 players including Clifton and Sawyer who nominally play in the middle (10 if you include Jones), albeit that Osbourne is out for a while and McAllister might never be fit. That's a lot of players to fill 2 or 3 positions!

With Woolford we have 5 wingers (6 including Wright) which is perhaps one too many but it is always useful to have a choice on the bench as wingers at this level invariably have games where they don't get anywhere or simply lose form.

Up front we've got 5 strikers to choose from (7 including young Rose and Jones) though, of course, it's a question whether Asante will get fit enough to play a big role. Maybe a little top-heavy if you're playing two up front but seriously overloaded if you're playing with a lone striker!

All in all, just a few too many players. I'd be happier if we had another specialist full-back at the club and one or two of the central midfielders weren't around, but not too disastrous as far as the balance goes. Only issue now is whether or not enough of them are up to the job.

Havent read too many people advocating we spend more? Some think the budget should have been spent differently (quality over quantity) but if it suits your agenda to have a go at those who chose to Boycott the Trophy on moral grounds so be it

If what you say is correct then why are you not responding to those who have expressed those views on Facebook and Twitter as opposed to those on here who havent mentioned such things?
