Quote from Chesterfield forum:

"I suppose there is a certain level of satisfaction that we can shaft little tinpot teams like Grimsby the same way teams like Wigan can shaft us"

I suppose there will be a few clubs that see us as "tinpot". It'll make it that bit sweeter when we turn them over.

There's nobody that can justifiably and credibly call us 'tinpot' at L2 Level, including Chesterfield, who are a smaller club than us with a less auspicious history, but who just happen to be temporarily one league higher than us for the present. Remembering we are one of the FL's oldest clubs with a proud tradition of playing in all divisions, this is water off a duck's back, being factually inaccurate and childish.

We may well be in their league next season. Maybe getting a new ground too, I so hopr we can recapture some of the old form and fight to get into the championship.

I'm still having a wry smile at that comment after i saw it the other day. Chesterfield calling us tinpot is laughable.

Surely it's only new / young fans who would say something as stupid and ill-informed as that. There is no measure by which we could be called tinpot ffs.

The last time we were any good in the Football League was about 10 years ago. People under the age of 30 can be forgiven for regarding us as minnows, we just have to prove them wrong.

The amount of sides underestimating our size or followings since we've been promoted is extraordinary. Pompey fans moaning that another 'tinpot side who will only bring 100 fans' are up was a personal highlight.

It makes a nice change. It's nice to go into a season not expecting to beat a few of these sides but it'll be so so satisfying when we do.

Just for the record, our results against our " superiors " is .... Against Portsmouth then they do have a better record having won 38 against our 24 with 11 draws. Not too bad is it for tinpot Grimsby.    Against Chesterfield we lead them having won 37 to their 29 with 23 draws. Now who is tinpot........NOT US Mr.Chesterfield know all !

I think the home end at Chesterfield called us a lot worse than tinpots when hundreds of Town fans swarmed on the pitch after gaining promotion in 1990 and cleared their end.

Pretty sure I remember going to see town play Chesterfield back in...2009? Wasn't that long ago. Think they may have beat us last minute.

Anyway, short memories.

I seem to remember there was even trouble amongst Town fans in the away end that day. Very hot afternoon...

Rob's right with what he says about our absence from the league.   We've become largely forgotten about.  Most fans will not care less about non-league, nor our away support or even our history (as said above, anyone under the age of 30 will know very little about our past other than we've struggled quite a lot).

In all truth I couldn't care less if people think we're tinpot.  The best answer will be the one we deliver on the pitch.

Enjoyed the last time we played em 😂

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

From Hartlepool's forum:

The last time we played them in any competition was in the JPT. They brought 63 fans.

Previous game was the one I mentioned, Boxing Day 2006, and they actually brought 351.

The 8-1 was well before that, just over 3 years before, Sept 2003.They brought 272.

Like I said, they have never had much of an away following, but our recent record against them in the league is very good. We have won 9 of the last 11 league meetings, and they have only won one.

I thought the 8-1 was a midweek game and they have never really brought much of a following here either I am sceptical they have ever mustered 351?

I can remember them bringing about a 100 last game of the season 1989 , about 50 of them had knotted hankies on their heads.
I believe this was when their tradition of fancy dress at end of season games started

It is a reality check for any team to drop out of the league , these teams who have never had to endure the ignominious drop should count themselves very fortunate .  Shrewsbury , Luton , Cambridge Doncaster etc have known what its like  and I would have thought there fans would remember this too .

So although we have had 6 years away we will come back stronger , wiser and more tolerant of the snide remarks . Sticks and stones  as they say .

Sod them and there arrogant fans, chesterfield and hartlepool hardly world beaters that take 100s and 1000s to matches. Would they have the away support the past 6 years like we have, I very much doubt it and will also look forward to beating a very average hartlepool side next season. UTM

Our away following will be far bigger now at the like of Hartlepool. Had conversation on here that we didn't used to take many to a good portion of the games over couple hours away and got told by many I clearly didn't know what I was on about... Bollox, we had a faithful few hundred most the time.

We'll be rocking next season, partying with vastly swollen ranks (so long as we competing well) -bet a lot of teams will be shocked at us being nothing like they remember.

There were a few hundred of us in the home seats too!! Some lads travelling to Chesterfield midweek to bring back wads of tickets. Was with a couple of lads from Arsenal who couldn't believe the support. Same day as Bournemouth v Leeds which drew all the headlines. Seem to remember the game was stopped for a while and end of season "celebrations" on their pitch.. by just us the Town fans. Tinpot as we are, Chesterfield fans thought better of their own on pitch celebrations..

I have seen Town play in the second tier (i.e. the Championship) from 1980 to 1987, from 1991 to 1997, and from 1998 to 2003.

I'd like to know how may season Chesterfield have spent in the 2nd tier in the same period.

Oh, just checked. answer NONE.

In fact they haven't been in the second tier since the 1930's, when of course we were in the top division. Chesterfield have never played in the top division.

If we are tinpot what on earth are they? at a guess I'd say shitpot.

Barnsley, Sheff Utd, Leeds, Birmingham, Derby, Wolves, Sunderland and the like all remember games against us for many seasons at Championship level and are glad we are back in the league.

The Chesterfields, Donny Rovers, and Scunthorpes, are teams we rarely played so you can forgive them as they rarely looked above what is now League 1, in fact most were League 2.

And speaking of the bent church spire choir, they haven't been in the 2nd tier of English football since they were relegated out of it 1952 ish, the cnuts. We have spent more time in the top flight than they ever did at Championship level.

The Scunts need to look closer to home, they offered free tickets out and hardly anyone took them up and that's when they are chasing play off's from League 1.

Scumthorpe are the pretenders of Lincolnshire football.

This is what we get for being down in the doldrums for do long. I'd pretty much guarantee these comments are ftom young nesbitts who never known any different. Briefly leapfrogging us when they were young at most.

While i couldnt really care less on the comments of other teams keyboard warring kids I look forward to dishing out a few behind whoopings in coming years to restore parity.

It's also having a dilapidated outdated stadium compared to their gleaming new un's which lands us the 'tinpot' label .

N.b. what the fook is a tinpot club anyway?!

New stadium so important now as part of re-establishing our proud name, we're well into 21st Century for Christ's sake!

I think it was a Friday night game so no surprise there wouldn't have been too much of a following. I was at a friend's wedding and didn't find out the score until the morning - I thought that the person telling me was taking the urine!

Hartlepool have been a couple of divisions below us for most of the time I've been supporting Town so it seems funny that their fans should consider us as some sort of a small club! In recent years, they've been a division or two above us but this marks our worst ever spell at the same time they've had their best ever spell. Not to mention our average attendance was higher this season than theirs, despite the fact that most of our opponents only brought two men and a dog with them.

It will be a nice change to see a few more opposition fans this season. Good for the coffers as well.

Hartlepool is amusing as their biggest attendance of the season was 5046 but that was second to last game against Pompey so what are the odds that Pompey contributed at least 1000 of that? They couldn't even muster 5000 at home for a game in the fa cup against Derby ffs! And they have the nerve to question our following

Yeah, the Hartlepool 8-1 game was a Friday night as I can remember Jeff Stelling kept banging on about it on Soccer Saturday that he hadn't been able to report all the goals.

I can also remember going there on New Years Eve in the late 80's. We had a good 3 or 4 hundred there that day including The Pink Panther, Sylvester The Cat, The Incredible Hulk, King Kong and a few others. We lost 4-2 but we had a great day out,

That was a shite Friday night, i think I went to every game home and away that season. I never dreamt we would be relegated right up until we were!!

Fans of Chesterfield and Hartlepool calling us tinpot and questioning our followings is amusing.

For every fan of such clubs who belittle us I'd bet there are just as many fans of other teams out there who respect us for what we once were, where we we've been recently  and where we're now back to....

Our history has never been like the Chesterfileds and Hartlepools of this world, year after year at the same level more or less, nor will it ever be I'd say....they might think they're stable and settled at their level but all it takes is one bad season or two and they could be the next Tranmere

Definitely a Friday game. I was working in Stockton at the time and went to the game with two Hartlepool S/T holders. By the time the fifth one went in they were pi**ing themselves, especially as all week I'd been telling them they were going to be on the receiving end of a hammering from a resurgent Town team who'd adjusted to life in League One...

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

We've spent six years accusing many of our counterparts as tinpot pub sides. Now the boot is on the other foot. We have to earn our stripes.

Exactly it might to some of these teams something to think about if the get the drop as we did . We've had 6 years of going to Woking Eastleigh, ,Braintree  Tamworth etc . You have to respect them for the way they run their clubs and how they finance themselves . The premiership is so far out of sight with the same clubs see sawing every season . They see every other team below themselves  as tinpot with the obscene amount of money they receive , we can only do our best but make sure it doesn't  happen again .

I couldn't give a monkeys fart if they think we're 'tinpot' we all know better and anyone with half a brain cell will know what a Big, historical and traditionally proud club we really are.
I can't wait for those freezing cold Tuesday nights when the likes of Blackpool and Portsmouth come to town and their players hearts sink when they walk out to 5-6 thousand screaming mariners......Job half done.

We earned those stripes at Championship level for years, we've played more in the top two flights of football than we have the lower two and have over a 100 years league history, people calling us tinpot have tinpot knowledge about football.

It's about recognition, who are Grimsby and their fans, anyone outside the Championship should fear us, we were an injured wild animal keeping low, licking our wounds, now we have recovered some what, watch out.

Supporting the Mighty Mariners for over 30 years, home town club is were the heart and soul is and it's great to be a part of it.

Not everyone out there is going to be shocked

I rang Sky last night to sort out my subscriptions - supposedly to get rid of sports now the season has just about finished but as usual they ask why and can they offer a deal

While talking abut the football they had on offer the bloke on the other end of the phone mentioned he supported Cardiff, to which I of course threw in our Slade connection

That was like I'd switched a light on with him...he was Grimsby this, Grimsby that. Knew all about our double Wembley weekend and said he follows what our fans are up to from different sites ( Football Away Days etc I assume ) and how amazing the Town support is

It might all have been part of him preparing the way for me to sign up with Sky again of course, but it would take a very clever salesman to have such knowledge of our club all the way down where he's based without showing more than a passing interest

As I said above in another post I am certain there will be as many genuine football fans who will welcome us back in to the league with open arms as there are who might think we are ne'er-do-wells coming up from the non-league

I'm sure there'll be plenty of fans at clubs around the country who will respect us and our support and if some don't....well we'll just out-sing them I'm sure!

Ha ha! Yes it would be a bloody good CRM system if he could just click the appropriate button to find bants for the relevant club!

I agree you can usually tell the knowledgeable fans out there. Partly it's an age thing, I guess with fans below a certain age not knowing our not too distant history. But with t'internet, even a lot of those youngsters will have seen 'our' activity.

I think it's an age thing. Take a look at all the teenagers and kids supporting Town now -most of them have never known anything but non-league football.

Add to that in any case I think the vast majority of the types of people to make such comments online are generally the younger.

Worked round the country a lot till recently and most customers I spoke to who into football shocked and saddened by our demise saying what a great old club we are. Some even reminisced on loving BP away days or hailing one of our giant killings against them or a near rival.
