If he made it clear he wanted to go, it's a six figure fee and it isn't a team in our division then I think the club have made the only sensible decision. Hopefully Swindon have accidentally bought Duffy instead.

At least with him handing in a transfer request he loses his % of the transfer fee.  The only bonus to come out of this sad news.

At least it isn't to Luton and at least it is a six figure fee. We can replace him with that money. And if he wanted to go its best to let him. Thank you for your goals Alan and best of luck with your new club.

He obviously wanted to go, they're a decent side, not in our league and must have offered decent money for him. I'm just glad it
isn't Luton. Good luck Alan, hope we manage without you. UTMM

Not for one moment did I think AC would start the season with GTFC, he wanted out but didn't want to be cast in a bad light. He can't be blamed for wanting league football off the back of one good season at his age, next season he could have scored less and would have been a year older out of contract and not such a proposition for league clubs. Secondly I think his desire to live nearer the south played a major role in his decision. Swindon nice place, close to major cities and south/west coast!

Gutted as I am I hold no hard feeling towards AC and he goes with my best wishes and I hope he does well. He'd made no secret of his wish to get back into league football and he certainly has the class to play there.

Cheers Alan and thanks for the memories.

If he'd gone to Luton though, then that would have been a different story.

I bet Shouty and Shorty are well happy to have got rid of Connell, I felt there handling of him since they came in was poor. They now have their own team of "110%" effort merchants. Lets hope at least more than just Coulson and Eagle can trap a ball eh? If Hearn and the other new boys are garbage on Saturday perhaps people will re-think some of the over ambitious rubbish being banded about.

Atleast with the Connell saga put to bed we can all look forward to a new season of hoofball.

I'd rather watch us try and play proper football and I just dont think we are going to do that. There is no fun in watching a bish bash bosh up an at em team IMO. Of course I want us to do well but I'd rather see us at least try and play some form of football that can be considered entertaining.

Anyway, Ive had enough of positive. Presume the worst then everything else has to be better. Surely???????

Who says we're finished in the transfer market ? S&H have proven to be shrewd buyers, maybe they have had a target lined up in case Connell went. Either way I expect decent and consistent football and management under them, after all the make it up as you go along management from Woodsy.

Well this gives us chance to spend at least half of whatever the money is on another goalscorer that Penn and Teller want. Gutted, truely gutted but slight optimism to see who comes in, if anybody.

It seems pretty obvious Connell was desperate to leave and he would have intimated as much to the club. This is why they have been not-so-subtly touting him around during the past week or two.

I still think he would have done himself a favour by staying for a second year, scoring another hatful of goals, then moving on at the end of his contract. However, at least we've got some decent enough money for him.

Question is, do we need another striker now? Hearn looks to have been signed as a replacement for Connell but does this mean that Duffy is now back in the reckoning for the first team once again?

Just a pity that we didn't have another couple of decent players last season who could have helped make all of Connell's goals worth something and given us a chance of promotion.

100k plus what we're saving on his wages will get us a decent player at this level. I'm disappointed he's gone but I'm confident h+s will reinvest wisely.

For felicitations sake.

I won't lie, I honestly thought he was gonna stay until January at the very least because I didn't think anyone would be willing to pay what we wanted. Ah well. That is some decent dosh for a striker at our level. I hope we bring in another striker though, it'd be a risk to go into the season with what we've got.

Good luck in the future Alan.

WHS

Amazing money in the current climate.  Charlton have been buying up young, proven, league one talent for sums around 250k other than them and Huddersfield I'm struggling to think of any club outside of the top 2 divs who have paid a six figure fee for anyone.

Swindon could be a good move for AC as I expect Di canio to at least try and get them playing the ball to feet rather than lumping it to, and over, his head.

Certainly an interesting move.  AC is the first 'big' money signing made by Swindon since Di Canio took over so there will be added pressure on him to deliver.  Swindon have also lost a lot of their supposed 'better' players from last year.  Still, I don't suppose you get the opportunity to work with a legend like Di Canio every day.  Good luck AC.

Good business IMO.

Although I'm not as convinced as some about H&S and their ability to replace him adequately.

Much to prove IMO, but looking forward to the first game of the season for sure.

Sad to see him go, but the deal is at least right for all parties, we got a an acceptable offer, they got a good player and we've got enough time for shortarse and shoutyface to sign someone else. If that is what they plan to do. I'm not so sure a new striker is top of their list even with Al gone. Good luck Al.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts

You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby

Sad to see him go, but the deal is at least right for all parties, we got a an acceptable offer, they got a good player and we've got enough time for shortarse and shoutyface to sign someone else. If that is what they plan to do. I'm not so sure a new striker is top of their list even with Al gone. Good luck Al.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!

Gutted he's gone, especially after the most recent claims by thew club (yesterday?) that they wanted him to stay.

Is SWD still out of contract? Think Del and Rodders will probably get him in quick now. With the style of play we're expecting this season, injuries to Coulson and Hearn could be a regular problem so we may as well get another goalscorer in if we're going to have a sustained push for the title.

I dont think there is much else Town could do here. Some posters are saying we lack ambition and inevitably some fans will see this as another chance to have a pop at Fenty.

Connell had expressed his wish to be back in the FL (which i think is fair enough) and i think most would agree he deserves to play at a higher level. If a player wants to go these days there's not much a club can do.

Had he gone to Luton that would have left a bitter taste in the mouth - both Town and Connell would have received a lot of flak and rightly so

in this scenario Connell leaves with best wishes from most fans and Town get a decent amount of money in return...in 12 months he could have left for nowt.

I wish AC well and thank him for his contribution to last year.

my hope now is that at least some of the cash will be available for new player(s)

Well done Mr Fenty good business IMHO Connell will not be anywhere near last seasons goal tally in the league and may struggle to stay in the side. Has no pace and has to have the ball to feet.

Good luck Alan and all the best for the future - thanks for your entertaining and attacking play last season which was a refreshing change from the drivel served up in recent years. Total respect and good luck !
