Alex needs to find a home where he is appreciated and can settle down and play his football. He's 22 now and it doesn't look like his home town club Sheffield Wednesday are likely to give him an opportunity any time soon. I'd be looking to sign him permanently rather than a temporary fix. He is a quality footballer, I love the way he strikes a ball (so does Luke Waterfall) but I'm a little concerned as his form dropped off a cliff towards the end of his loan with us last time.

That coincided with everyone’s form dropping off and the other young lads and loanees we had seemingly bringing an end to their time with us. Could it be that he couldn’t deal with that? It’s been intimated that a lack of professionalism was a reason for many of them to be sent back, was that an issue for Hunt? Is he a confidence player? Was the uncertainty of what was happening next a factor? Who knows?

What I do know is that he’s a great footballer and would certainly bring some much needed class to our midfield.

He is quality, and in all honesty shouldn't be in league two permanently. But we're close to Sheffield where I assume he lives, he could really use us to gain experience and kick on in his career. He still has time to get his career going but I wouldn't want to be 23/24 and still in the reserves. That said, we aren't overly short in central midfield so I wouldn't really want our own lads progress to be stunted by bringing Alex in on loan. We are absolutely desperate for two centre forwards IMO.

I have no idea what Hunt earns at Wednesday but no doubt it will be way above league 2 average.  There lies the dilemma for young players at big clubs, sit it out and earn big money, or drop down to get some game time and build but on reduced earnings.  It’s not an easy decision.

Correct. At the school I teach at one of the lads left us (5 years ago) for a youth contract at Wednesday. His first pro contract was £1400 per week. He’s no longer there but if that’s the starting point for Hunt, plus a couple of years then there is a balance between salary and playing and we will offer less salary I’d have thought. It depends what he really wants but as others have pointed out it’s not quite working for him at Wednesday so taking a cut to play and get yourself in the shop window is probably better long term but whether he feels that way we can’t know.

From what I’ve been told, Ben Grist is on quite a bit more than that already. It’s a real problem created by the excessive money at the top levels.

Humberside have just said that Town are in for him but Wednesday don't want to sell him permanently and that is what Town want.
Hunt's agent is the Hull summariser Swanny's son, so you'd imagine they'd have a bit of inside info

According to Hurst we've been in for Hunt all summer, doesn't really understand Moore's comments because it's in Wednesday's hands not ours. We're only interested in a permanent deal, not interested in a loan, Moore happy for him to leave, Hunt wants to come here, it's being held up higher up at Wednesday but not really sure on what basis. Like someone else said Peter Swann's son is his agent and Matt Dean said he thinks it will happen so they obviously know something and it probably will.

Hunt would go in for Green in my opinion, granted a different kind of player completely but I'd drop Hollohan a little deeper and give Hunt the free reign. Not writing Green off by any means but on current form that's what I'd do.

I hope we get him, just the kind of creativity we need, good on the ball, good first touch, can switch and spread the play which is something we’re missing and in dead ball situations a threat.

With him and Glennon in the side, we'd have some real threat from set pieces.

Absolutely mental. Five grand a week even though he can't get in the side at his third division parent club.

No slight on him mind, I'd have him back here but still, five grand a week to play in the fourth tier. Game's gone.

Very much doubt he would be on 5k here, but if he wants to play instead of sitting and waiting to be released at the end of his contract at the Owls, then he will jump at the chance to join a team on the up.

He isn't demanding that.

Sheff Weds wanted us to pay all his wages to extend his loan when he was here last season and it was reported to be 5k. We wouldn't entertain any player on that wage in this division and rightly so.

There's no way he's on 5 grand a week at Wednesday. If he was in anything like that he wouldn't be entertaining a move to us.

he's 22 and has played about 7 games for them. He won't be a big earner, even at our level.

He will be a great addition

Not sure where this figure of 5k a week has come from. Not a chance PH would be chasing a player on a permanent deal earning that much.

Not including all the extras, but 24 squads of 18 is 432, I’d hazard a guess that around 30/40 of them earn over £4k.

It’s quite believable that Hunt is on that and were he to come on a loan deal we’d pay a chunk of that, I guess it’s whether not we see that as value for money.

He’s a great player and I’d have him back in a heartbeat but I’m aware it’s not as simple as that…

If that site accurate, to some extent it is but there’s likely to be discrepancies, you have to commend Morais for managing to negotiate that salary, especially how difficult it was to get Fenty to part with anything. We really were a mess…

I wonder if the £900 is the percentage we paid him…

Just because he's apparently on £5k a week doesn't mean he will demand that in his next deal. His next club is about getting his career on track so he can potentially earn that kind of money and more in the future.

If Wednesday offer him equivalent terms next summer, he goes to tribunal and he's been there years. I imagine it's a decent category academy too which pushes the fee up. I imagine this is quite a complicated, drawn out deal as Wednesday probably want as close to any likely tribunal fee minus as little of his outstanding wages and we probably want to shift that risk to his future potential value. As Hunt will probably be taking a pay cut, he probably wants to walk out with the bulk of what he's owed. What that figure is and who pays it could be a sticking point too.

I think the deal gets done for an undisclosed fee with a sell-on.

The dilemma for players like this is whether playing first team football is more important than their pay packet. We’ll just have to wait and see.

It's unusual for PH to talk so openly about a player were are pursuing and the fact we want him on a permanent or nothing at all.

Perhaps it is frustration at Sheff Weds for the confusion over whether he is available or not, but he doesn't ever go into detail like that until the deal is done normally.

It's a rarity for sure that PH talks so openly, but then again in this term with the club he just seems more relaxed and candid, I also thought his response to yesterday's performance said a lot about how high he wants to raise the bar.

In terms of Hunt I'd love to know what his agent is doing o get his client first team football even if it means a cut to his basic.

The cynic in me makes me wonder if that's a factor, I guess good agents set their players up where they'll be happiest and playing regularly, or is that my naivety?

He was sending a clear message to Wednesday and Hunt who I suspect, from what was said, is keen on joining us. There will be a fee involved so that is probably what Wednesday are delaying on, because PH said in the interview it's out of Darren Moore's hands at the moment.

It's been well documented that Wednesday have had their financial challenges so it does not surprise me that Darren Moore isn't doing the numbers bit.

It's utter madness to think Hunt is on anywhere near 5 grand a week, some of their first team regulars won't be on that.

Wednesday are holding on for a bigger fee

We are seeing a new side to Paul Hurst. Several months ago he would never have named names in interviews but now we know he has spoken to JMD and is using his post-match interviews to put pressure on Wednesday to get Hunt.

It could be new tactics or just frustration.

I don't suppose anyone has a link to Hurst's post-match interview? I had the radio on in the background yesterday but was busy getting the kids their tea at the time so didn't hear any of it. I've had a quick search using my phone and can't find a link either on BBC Sounds or elsewhere.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0crz9z3 The embarrassing interview with McMahon is about 20 mins in, ending with over to a "Grimsby United" fan...

Matt Dean with PH is about 39 mins.

It seems Hurst wants him, Hunt wants to come, and the SW manager is happy for him to leave. So let's hope they can get this over the line.

If we had paid a big fee (100k has been mentioned which is enormous for us) then you'd expect a 3 year deal I would have thought.

yup and that a transfer fee paid - how things have changed in the last 18 months! would NEVER ,EVER have happened under Fenty

the fact that Hurst has pursued him for so long, he's got a 3 year deal and we've paid a fee for him tells you all you need to know really

I remember how good Hunt was in the beginning but also I remember how his form literally dropped of a cliff along with the rest of the squad, at times he can give the ball away sloppily but then so can everybody. Good business I think and one hopes he can continue to progress.

His form dipped at that same time everyone else’s did and during a spell when we know, although never been confirmed that there were some off field issues.

I heard a rumour at the time that Hunt wasn’t happy with the other players, I even heard he told the gaffer some of what was going on which may have ostracised him for a bit.

Who really knows, but he s young lad with a lot of potential. This signing is a bold and a great signing, giving us loads of options across the middle…

It doesn't matter what happened in the past Hunt has left it there, otherwise he wouldn't have made a permanent move to us. He has the potential to become a very good player and obviously rates Hursty so another reason to make the decision to sign.

That’s my point, perhaps, for him at that time going back felt a better option, may be Hurst understood that but continued to pursue him.

His form did dip but so did everyone else’s, well, apart from Waterfall really.

I’m well chuffed with the signing…

Really good footballer, comfortable on the ball, can switch play which will bring the full backs and wide players in which is something we’ve been missing. As we know he likes a free kick and a corner.

Excellent signing and proper length of deal, well done to PH and the club. We’re going to be a nightmare to defend against at corners.

If everyone is fit in time for the turn of the year I’d expect us to be half decent.

If we are talking about midfielders Pouton cost £150k and I'm sure Stuart Campbell cost £250k.

Think it was nearer to 50k originally we were sticking with 30k.

Still nice to pay a fee for quality and huge potential.

£100K on Wayne Burnett?   When did he ever score a last second golden goal to win a cup final at Wembley?
........................

I rate Hunt very highly.  A 3 year deal makes all the difference.  He likes the club and want to be here and play for Hurst.   Similarly, Hurst rates him highly. An exciting player. The fee reflects the Club's ambitions.

We need a skillful and creative player to make accurate forward passes, take corners and freekicks.  I see him as the lower division Modric, who is still pulling strings at the highest level.  He must be 85 if he is a day. He is as slight a build as Modric.  Which does not make a difference.  Hunt will have enforcers to protect him and win the ball for him.

Hunt is maybe 8-10 years away from his prime.  I don't rate his form deteriorating here in a poor team. He was and is very young.

Even when we were doing well last season, I thought that Hunt often faded out of games and didn't see enough of the ball at times, so we'll need to work on getting him into possession in areas where he can do some damage.

He's not the sort to go careering around the pitch after the ball (though he'll do his defensive share), but I personally think we'll need to get him into possession a little further forward than he was much of the time last season. No point in having somebody with the ability to pick out passes and keep the ball moving on quickly. Hopefully, he'll link up with Morris well and help us to get the wide players into the game more frequently. Also, better quality balls towards Taylor would certainly help him in his role.

It will be interesting to see who is going to play with the new signings and just what sort of formation we'll end up playing. Once Hunt is settled in, I'd perhaps expect to see him in the middle three alongside Morris and Holohan/Green, hopefully in front of those two.

This could end up being one of the best signings we’ve made in years. Hunt has loads of potential and Hurst knows exactly how to get it out of him. I suspect Giles Coke will have a part to play in his development too.

If he achieves half of his potential we’ll make a fair few quid of him as he’ll be wanted much higher up the pyramid.

Green, Clifton and Holohan will get him the ball, he'll do the rest I'm sure. What i would say is that there has been some comments about him fading etc... often happens to youngsters that, sometimes in isolated games sometimes in spells.

Warerfall must be polishing his forehead in anticipation of superb deliveries !!

Glennon's have done well, but Hunt's were rifled exactly where Waterfall wanted them most times !!
