Reminds me of this match report I read last season...

Manchester United’s hospitality operation was in full flow on Saturday lunchtime.

Those well heeled enough to own a private box were treated to a starter of smoked salmon Benedict, a fancy fry-up containing — among other things — “maple drizzled bacon” for their main course, and a pear and peach strudel for dessert.

Club legends popped into the various boxes to say hello, as did magicians, a caricaturist and a “football freestyler”.

The most expensive private boxes, located in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, cost £210,000 a year. They are so expensive that customers are given the option of paying the yearly fee in instalments.

At what point, one wonders, do the owners of such boxes think: is this really worth it? The service, food and drink are good, of course, but what is being served up on the pitch is quite the opposite.

United may continue to brand themselves as the biggest club in the world, but the evidence on the pitch suggests that is not the case. Far from it. Can they even be considered an elite-level team any more?

For the odd 45-minute or 60-minute period they play well enough, show glimpses of promise, but then all of a sudden they look like a mediocre mish-mash of players who run into blind alleys or pass the ball sideways to avoid taking risks.

They have drawn three of their past four matches despite going ahead. Top teams, such as Manchester City, are mentally strong enough to hold on to leads.

Ronaldo hasn’t scored in six games for United...

They are currently 3rd richest club in the world, so yes, they are an elite club. The fact they are not doing so well on the pitch right now is irrelevant, not that I give a stuff. No amount of money guarantees success on the pitch.

The fans that pay £200,000 for a box can obviously afford it and I doubt they watch the full 90 mins anyway. Probably used for schmoozing clients.

Crikey..., instalments!?! You can tell something is really expensive when you have the option of paying in instalments.

(Just like your £340 Town ST....)

I’d imagine that many of the executive suites at Utd are used for corporate reasons. I appreciate a few could be owned by wealthy Utd fans/famous folk but sadly, they’re just a great way to entice customers etc to businesses…

I do know that the Utd experience in these terms isn’t what it used to be, Old Trafford is old these days so I’d imagine that doesn’t help the experience…
