Hope he will be back if we can't keep Smith.
Lot of chatter about him coming back.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Maybe open to a local-ish loan move. Its a helluva a drive between here and Swansea.

Interesting to see he only appeared in the first team once between early Feb and the end of the season.

It would be a remarkable signing given he's still a good age and has played at such a high level. He was better than League 2 standard when he left us as a youngster so he ought to be at least the same standard now for another couple of years (injuries permitting).

If he hasn't been injured and hasn't been picked, perhaps he's on the way out of Swansea in any case. A 2 or 3 year contract offer here might well be attractive enough despite the step down in level. He ought to be worth a few quid after his Premiership career so money might not be the main driving factor for him.

Well - I’m on the Gower at the mo.
If Ryan wants to get in touch with me about the plus points in re-joining Grimsby Town?
No - I remember him knowing all about Grimsby at age 16.
Would not be surprised if he comes back, because he likes the place - and he could give Town 5 stable seasons service min. - good move.

Didn't somebody say Max Wright also bought a house down Humberston Ave? Is this the new rumoured place that players have been spotted blurting out transfer news? XD

You would think so...although I'm not sure on the appetite levels from a few of those clubs.  Bennett played 18 times in the league last year for Swansea, only 16 of those starts.  He also failed to make the squad for the last dozen or so games (perhaps injured).  In fact his only appearance since early Feb was as a half-time sub against Fulham.  0-0 when coming on with Swansea leaking 5 in the second half.

Not saying that was Bennett's fault but considering Swansea finished 15th I can't imagine Sheffield United, with promotion ambitions, would be looking towards a guy who was a bit part player in a lower mid-table side.  Equally so Hull finished not too far away from Swansea and by all accounts feel they've got a chance of kicking on this year under new owners.

Sheffield Wednesday, a division below, but will fancy themselves to really push for it this year which could see them want someone like Bennett or go the other way and feel they can/need to do better.  Lincoln I think are gonna be tightening their belt and my understanding is that Kennedy's remit is very much around bringing younger players through as assets.

I've no info to suggest he is/isn't signing for us.  But if I was signing for, let's say, Sheffield Wednesday but wanted to move back to the area still, I'd perhaps move somewhere other than Humberston Ave.  Somewhere with easier/quicker access to the motorway.

Bradford and Mansfield have been mentioned as being interested, but now we are in the same division, why waste hours of your day and a small fortune in fuel, when you can play on your doorstep in the same division?

Exactly.

I'm understanding it that moving back to GY is for family reasons, to then add a three/four hour commute onto your day doesn't add up.

Genuinely wouldn't surprise me if he rocks up in a Town shirt this summer.

He’s under contract at Swansea, where he must be on a five figure weekly wage. He’s only 32 and was playing regular Premier League football as recently as 2020.

I’d love to be proven wrong on this, but it seems highly unlikely to me that he’ll end up here any time soon.

It's still only a rumour that he's moved back, right?  He was also earning Premier League wages not so long ago so he probably could afford two houses and just visit his girlfriend/family periodically.

Unless he's genuinely committed to settling back into the area and is happy to take a substantial pay cut to do so, I'd say this is unlikely.  Would be a tremendous signing though.

I doubt a footballer who has spent 13 seasons in either the championship or the premier league will be too concerned by house prices in NE Lincs.

Huh ? What do you mean . People are saying he has bought a house on Humberston ave , then saying he could sign for us . What I’m saying is that he hasn’t decided to move here and buy a house in the last 3 days , since we went up . It takes weeks to buy a house

I really don’t see how we could possibly get anywhere near his likely current wage and I wouldn’t think it pragmatic if we ended up paying him loads more than we pay others, so I really don’t see this as anything other than people putting two and two together….

Can’t see it myself.

He's probably on £300-400k at Swansea. He's 32 and played a bit part season for a lower-midtable Championship side. He probably ain't getting that sort of money anywhere else now. He's probably looking at £150-200k at a decent League 1 club. Realistic alternatives within a reasonable travelling time from Humberston that are above League 2 are limited. Wednesday, Hull, Rotherham and Lincoln? Hopefully he'll have put away a decent nest egg earning high 6 figures as a premier league player. If we can get in there with a £100k a year offer, you never know

World Cup winner Socrates signed for Garforth Town once upon a time.

There could be other reasons why Bennett may sign for Town. Maybe he's looking long term at coaching/management, or even looking to be a part of the clubs future somehow. Maybe it's just because his Mrs wanted to move back to Cleethorpes. That's how we got Ben Davies and he's a part of the furniture now.

Who knows?

Yeah I totally misread your first post in a rush. You're right though, he won't have done this in the last week. So you'd assume he has something lined up because it's a long way to Swansea for a commute.

The number of ex and existing players being touted for coaching roles with us would see a coaching staff bigger than the playing staff 😁

Maybe he’s bought a house here for when he retires? I would imagine he owns a fair few properties around England.

Just because he has a house here doesn’t mean he is immediately moving back.

Hate to be that guy but theres absolutely nothing in this, He's on around 10,000 - 20,000 a week and unless you think Paul hurst is going to spend the majority of the wage bill on a center back there is no way he will be here next season.

Much more likely to see him at Hull or one of the sheffield clubs, perhaps even lincoln but i will be shocked to see him here

Yeah, well he was 50 at the time! Played a dozen minutes in a bizarre publicity stunt. Wasn't it something to do with promoting Futsal? The Garforth Town owner was involved with that, I seem to think.
