Good point, but really the players are the issue. The few who have brains and guts are the ones I admire - Kevin de Bruyne has no agent, negotiated a 350K per week salary, and trousers the lot. Now THAT’S the way to do it.

When you hear of players telling their manager they must speak to them about contacts through their agents, it makes my blood boil. Can you imagine what Brian Clough would have done?!

I could be wrong but I believe the basics are that they are not on the payroll paying PAYE like regular people, they set themselves up as companies that the club pay for their services which in turn reduces their tax burden.

I understand why players have agents this goes back when the Bosman ruling came about as agents were very rarely heard off and clubs wouldn't release players just because they were unhappy and so the ruling along with agents was meant to safeguard players welfares but just opened up a way of making money for someone really.

I don't get why clubs should have to pay a agent fee, if its the player wanting the agent then it should come out of their pocket.  If they manage to agree on a signing on fee etc i'm not actually sure how it works from a transactional POV.  But still think its the player who employees the agent not the club, maybe i'm just old fashioned.

I thought they had to be PAYE otherwise they’d be a third party and not working to FA rules? The taxman sees a permanent place of work as having been at an employer for longer than two years and until that point they can claim tax rebates on fuel duty etc.

I think Prem players are among the highest tax payers in the UK, to be fair to them. I don’t think there’s any escape for them, unlike your average light entertainer.

I think so too hence why it was unfair for Hatt Mancock to pick on them early in the covid days before they then donated a seven figure sum between them to the NHS charities.

I’d agree, when that fraud and certifier of death went after them he looked a complete fool. I’m sure some employ some highly skilled accountants to avoid tax, but the vast majority are morally sound and pay significantly more than most, which is how the tax system should work given their salaries.

Agents are corrupt, the lack of standardised guidance and so forth is terrifying really, but the only people to blame are footballers being dumb enough to believe they need one.

If anything, a genuine solicitor or financial broker type person would be a much more prudent move…

I would suspect the extension of IR35 means they don't get away with the limited company subcontracting employment in a similar fashion to other sectors that used the rules effectively over the years.

This is a dry subject.  I think that we need a joke about accountants.
