The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

The more pressure that's squeezed onto the Oligarch's will result in them squeezing harder on Putin.  Not because they're against what he's doing, but because it no longer serves their best interests.

From an absolute immediate point of view, this is excellent news.  Especially for those poor buggers in the Ukraine and those young lads and lasses basically getting sent to their death from the Russian side.  Putin's time is up and without the Oligarch's propping him up, he's done for.

But these short-term sanctions won't last.  Asset's will be unfrozen as quickly as they were frozen in the first place, probably within days, if not hours, of Putin getting the push.  The influence of these individuals, in the highest places of our Government will return too.

There is not a fanbase in the country I could muster up less sympathy for. A unique blend of national front hangovers, politicians and celebrities who decided football was cool in 1996.

Squeezing his neck as we speak hopefully then we can use Chelsea’s money to rebuild the maternity hospital as a start.

Alexei Navalny has Roman Abramovich at number 1 in his list of Putin’s friends who hold his stolen wealth. Abramovich should have been the first oligarch sanctioned.

The Bournemouth owner made his fortune as a trader, is now a British citizen and is not an oligarch.

No more ticket sales and the club shop shut.  Assuming Chelsea progress in the CL then probably no tickets available, even if they get to the final in Paris.  Which was ironically moved from Russia!

What happens at the end of the season when next seasons income is due? If the club can't receive revenue from fans in the form of tickets or merchandise then surely they won't be allowed to receive revenue from the Premier League or broadcasters for example?

Chelsea will run out of money very, very quickly. I would imagine the ban on player sales will mean players will be able to terminate their contracts without penalty.

Hard to feel sorry for Chelsea fans, especially given the fact they saw it fit to chant his name during a tribute towards Ukraine. In fact I’d go so far as to say there’s no other club that deserves this more than them.

Absolutely hilarious this - almost makes up for the 7-1. While the assets can be unfrozen quickly I’m not sure the fortunes of a football club are going to make a massive difference to a man set on world domination.

As things stand, it looks very, very bleak for Chelsea.

They could lose all their assets. Players have effectively been earning, in part, Russian money, and a lot of the revenue the club now generates through sponsorship and broadcast media has been earned by their success on the pitch — funded, in the main, by Russian money.

Even if you're a player who doesn't like to think about the root of your pay packet, you'd be worried about your media profile. Will your sponsors want to continue their association with you while you remain at Chelsea?

I'd imagine every agent of every Chelsea player right now is on the phone, trying to find their client a way out. There's likely to be a mass exodus. Not sure how soon that will happen, but no one will want to hang around.

It's funny but I remember talking about Chelsea when he first took over.
We thought then that it will all go pear shape if he throws his toys out of the pram sometime!
That hasn't happened but Uncle Bojo has taken them instead. Same outcome.
Watch this space regarding Bournemouth and Everton.

I guess squeezing the rich Russians we gave citizenship for a down payment is the best Britain can do these days in the hope it makes them put pressure on Putin to change his mind. Watching politicians backtrack on all their big talk when British soldiers want to volunteer and acting like snivelling cowards shows how effective Britain is on the world stage.

We are terrified of Putin and Russia so we'll hide under the table shaking the legs of Russians in this country hoping one of them can give Putin a telling off because Britain, Europe and NATO in general are toothless.

I’m obviously all for sanctioning Russian oligarchs, but feel this impacts Chelsea fans unnecessarily, no matter how much anyone hates them. Surely there could be some arrangement where fans can still buy tickets and merchandise with the proceeds going to a Ukrainian fund of some sort? I get that it’s all legal and political detail that probably goes over my head but I just can’t see this staying as it is and think the club might get some leeway. Think of how many stewards, stadium staff, club shop staff will be negatively affected to name just a few.

Point raised earlier about the profile of the Chelsea players.  A savvy player, for that read their PR team, will be all over this and putting forward their wages to help pay the wages of those in the club shop etc. who will be told not to report to work from tomorrow.

As long as the hard working low wage earners at the club aren't impacted this works for me.

So if they get to the ECL or FA Cup finals does that mean no tickets for their club or just that supporters will need to take their chance direct from another set of corrupt scum bags who have lost sight that the game belongs to the people and not mega rich sponsors and corporate Johnnies?

The vitriol towards Chelsea is odd at times.

Not only do I expect this to be over turned to some extent, I suspect this will impact the big standard staff at the club, which seems like another counterproductive measure from the government.

Meanwhile, those moral chaos at Newcastle are free to continue.

Surely the ticketing process has to change when they are away though? If you think about ourselves, we pay GTFC for an away ticket and they then forward that money onto the home side.

As the government have now deemed to act this way towards Chelsea, sponsors will no doubt start to move away, with Three now reviewing their £40m shirt sponsorship. Eventually it could impact player brand deals but what if Adidas turn around and say they don't endorse Chelsea wearing their merchandise anymore?

It's Semi-Finals now that are played at Wembley so they only have to beat Middlesborough to get there.

It’ll probably only have limited effect on Putin if any. The oligarchs only have their wealth at the say so if Putin. Go against him and it’ll all get confiscated and given to a yes man or nationalised. And they’ll get topped.

Still, freezing their assets is still a good thing. A portion of their wealth goes to fund Putin’s projects. The assets frozen can be used towards rebuilding Ukraine afterwards. And it helps clean up politics in this country. A lot of the wealth was probably illgotten anyway.

It's safe to say that any of these 'oligarchs' still on the go are beholden to Putin to some degree. All the others have been locked up in the gulags for (the wrong sort of) corruption or have come to unfortunate ends, mysteriously falling down the stairs of their mansions a few times or accidentally kicking themselves to death when out walking the dog.

Don't have a link to hand, but there is a web site somewhere (or perhaps a twitter feed) which analyses public photographs of Putin and members of the Russian establishment (bishops and so forth). It turns out that, despite having relatively low salaries (Putin included), these guys have a collection of flashy watches worth millions.

If anyone thinks that socialism has anything to do with modern Russia or Putin then they need to stop reading the Sun/Mail/Express/Star…
It’s no more socialist than Boris Johnson.

Eventually it could impact player brand deals but what if Adidas turn around and say they don't endorse Chelsea wearing their merchandise anymore?

Definitely an opening in the market for GTS.

The Government want to set up an independent regulator to assess potential owners of PL and EFL clubs.

Better late than never.  In our case, some 20 years too late.

The vitriol towards Chelsea is odd at times.

Not only do I expect this to be over turned to some extent, I suspect this will impact the big standard staff at the club, which seems like another counterproductive measure from the government.

Meanwhile, those moral chaos at Newcastle are free to continue.

I think the fact that Roman's mate decided that a maternity/children's hospital is acceptable collateral damage is reason enough for most people.

Not disagreeing but surely there should be the same level of vitriol towards Newcastle who are owned by folk who’ve spent a considerably longer period of time doing that exact thing….

Talking of watches. I saw a video recently where they showed a shot of the wrist of Kirill the Primate* of the Russian Orthodox Church with his $30k watch. Then a doctored version where those clever Russkies had edited out the watch. Only they’d forgotten to edit out the reflection on Vlad’s shiny table.

I remember when Abramovich first came on the scene, listening to Alan Brazil / Mike Parrywhen they had Tony Banks on their breakfast show... a Chelsea fan and a former Minister of Sport

When I heard it, he definitely came across as unhappy about Russian involvement but I think there were lots who just considered him as going against the grain

To be fair, even with him speaking out about it , I recall him saying what was their average fan supposed to do? It was all out of their hands at the time

I guess coming on the back of Ken Bates in the 80s trying to electrify fences around Stamford Bridge lots welcomed the Russians' money but even back then Banks did question the legitimacy of it all,  but just one voice against thousands who could only see the glory that awaited them

He was but isnt that the point, you cant be both, its just one person or a group of elites getting power based on an ideology that they arent part of themselves or use to their own benefit, happened in socialism and its happened in capitalism, end of the day the rest always lose out and everything works in the rich and powerfuls favour

Yes they probably would. They wouldn’t care about the double-standards (autocratic hydrocarbon rich country with terrible human rights record bombs smaller neighbour, except in this case it’s Yemen*)

* no excuse for Russia’s actions though

He totally was, but also he was no socialist. Communist perhaps, but that’s open to debate too.
Socialism brings you the NHS and free education and looks after the poorest in a society. If you think this things are not for you then you keep on voting for Lia Nici and her mob.

Spot on.  War crimes in Ukraine are shocking but those committed by our American cousins in the Middle East led to the persecution of the people who exposed them.  How many innocents have died from Western bombs and bullets?  Oh, collateral damage?  That's OK then.

It’s easier to forget that or ignore it thoigh whilst the west tries to be the worlds police.

It’s like the premier league imposing sanctions on Abramovic, they’re following government responses but in truth it’s just pointless and hugely hypocritical. It’s too late for elite football to grow a spine now and when the Saudi media deal goes through, which we all know it will, not a murmer will be heard by clubs or fans, the same folk holding Ukrainian flags and clapping before games…

I’m not saying it’s wrong to impose sanctions on Abramovic but what we know about him now is exactly what we knew when he bought the club. Didn’t seem an issue to the league then…

All a bit revisionist…

Middlesbrough have released a statement saying exactly what everyone other than Chelsea fans think of the request.

Quoted Text
We are aware of Chelsea's request to have Saturday's Emirates FA Cup sixth round tie played behind closed doors and find their suggestion both bizarre and without any merit whatsoever.

All concerned are well aware of the reasons Chelsea have been sanctioned and that this has nothing to do with Middlesbrough Football Club.

To suggest as result that MFC and our fans should be penalised is not only grossly unfair but without any foundation.

Given the reasons for these sanctions, for Chelsea to seek to invoke sporting "integrity" as reason for the game being played behind closed doors is ironic in the extreme.

We currently await formal notification from the FA of the next steps but rest assured MFC will resist Chelsea's actions in the strongest terms.

Chelsea now asking for Saturdays cup game at Boro to be played behind closed doors as they cant sell tickets to their fans - this is all becoming bonkers

Surely those who have already got a ticket can still go

Mind blowing levels of Chelsea arrogance.

Now withdrawn their request.

I’ve been looking at Solihull’s travelling support this season and it seems unlikely they bring more than 60-70 away fans to Blundell Park on a Tuesday night. This doesn’t seem fair given we are likely to have in the region of 5,000+ home fans at the game.

So… for reasons of sporting integrity I think we should ask the National League to play the game behind closed doors. Otherwise it would almost be like an away match for Solihull Moors.
