Well that's me glued to the laptop. Older than Bogez and not as glamourous to many of us but would be one hell of a signing in my opinion. Very happy if Akinde is our number 9 come Saturday.

I haven't known them to be spot on? I'm still waiting for Kurtis Guthrie and Guy Melamed to be playing for us on trial and they was saying for weeks and months that the takeover is set to be announced in the next few days

Irrelevant whether or not this Twitter account or Matt Dannant are reliable, because we are fortunate enough to be blessed with the incredibly ITK Fillipe Noche who I'm sure will be along in N N N N NO TIME to confirm if Akinde is signing or not.

That Twitter account reads like it's run by some kid/man-child, probably the same one running the Felipe Noche account on here. If he was actually in Grimsby then surely by now somebody like JT or Matt Dean would be tweeting about it.

I don't think JT and Matt Dean are reliable at all regarding transfers. They've both linked us with loads of players in the past that we didn't end up signing.

And thats why Grimsby may suffer from where they are situated I feel. I feel this had more to do with Akinde preferring the area eg more to do in London etc as I doubt wage wise Barnet could not offer much more than Grimsby?.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

At least Grimsby have  better history than Barnet. For players it's mainly about the money but for fans it does give a source of pride. I know it's all about the present but at least it  gives fans some nostalgia and hope things may get better in the future.

I can remembrer this although i saw it differently, what Akinde did was clever he moved his leg in front of collins when he went to clear the ball and booted the back of Akinde's leg.

I remember Akinde as being good at getting his body on the wrong side for the defender (a combination of strength and movement back then) and then going down like a sack of spuds if the defender put in a clumsy challenge. In the grand scale of things, probably no worse than Jack Lester tricking his way into the box, then going down like a sack of spuds!

Question is, can Akinde still perform? If he's similar to the player of his pomp, he'd be a good signing.

Jack Lester was far more artistic, - a beautiful trailing leg that the defender would catch.

Akinde is very much in the mould of Tony Cunningham also a Lincoln player and he played at Wednesday - he suckered Kevin Moore and the ref into a pen at Hillsborough that ended our faint hopes of promotion to Division 1 in 1984.

Would make sense after Steve Evans coming out on the radio last week saying that we put in a bid... Putting 2 + 2 together Hurst tried at signing him in the past I don't think it's too far off the money. Only worrying thing is that he's stated after Lincoln he wanted to remain down South.

Would make sense after Steve Evans coming out on the radio last week saying that we put in a bid... Putting 2 + 2 together Hurst tried at signing him in the past I don't think it's too far off the money. Only worrying thing is that he's stated after Lincoln he wanted to remain down South.

They say these things but if the right deal comes along and he’s guaranteed first team football…and wouldn’t have to deal with that flipping disgrace of a man Evans, you never know…

That said, as desperate as fans seem to be for a striker, I wouldn’t go overboard with his contract…

According to Evans quoted in Kent Online, Akinde is injured.

The real audience of that article was Paul Scully, Gillingham chairman who he’s trying to get more money out of.

Just a few bits on Akinde:

Last season he was at League One and scored 7 goals from 44 games (league).  But only in 18 of those games did he play 60 or more minutes.

In total he played 2042 minutes, which equates to a goal every 291 minutes, or if you prefer the equivalent of a goal every 3 and a quarter games.  Over the course of a 46 game season that would work out at 14 goals.

Now I'm not saying I think he's the answer at all.  But for a guy who had the strike-rate of 14 goals over a full season in a league that's two levels above ours....not sure I'd be turning my nose up either.

Nor would I. The only question mark I would raise is whether it’s a tad risky to have a strike force exclusively aged 32 years +. Especially when those already at the club have already missed most of pre-season through injury.

I would imagine, if there’s any truth in the Akinde rumour, that we would also see a younger loanee arrive too.

I fully understand the worry of strikers age, and it's something that concerns me as well.

But he's never relied on his pace IMO, so should still be able to deliver.

Look at Ian Henderson for Salford, 36 and was 2nd top scorer in League 2 last season.

Who needs pace when you can pretty much walk into the box and nobody can tackle you without fouling which gives you a penalty.

I don't think age makes a vast difference. My reason is that a 36 year old knocked in 29 goals for his club last year, not too bad for Ronaldo. It is the attitude of the player that counts.

We need strikers with the right attitude playing for the team, not payday men like Wrexham are signing.

The age argument I can see, although I'm genuinely torn on where I stand with it.

In isolation, is the age of Akinde (and I'm just going down the route with him rather than any 32-year-old) an issue?  Not at all for me.  32 is far from over the hill in my opinion.

If Akinde was injury prone, I have to confess I don't know if he is or isn't, then that would be more of a concern if we're adding him to an injury prone frontline than his actual age.

The big issue we've got at the present is that both of our out-and-out strikers are injury prone.  To me it doesn't matter if we add another 32-year-old, a 27-year-old or a 21-year-old.  The question is what will we get out of them.  If they're bringing injuries with them then we probably don't have the flexibility for them to be here.  Injuries can, of course, happen at any time but 3 injury prone strikers (of any age) is a risk, one that I think I'd rather not take.

If we are in for Akinde, which it's looking likely we are, I'd see that as very much a short-term fix with an eye on getting back in the league as soon as possible.  It's not future planning for the next 3 to 5 years.  It's doing what we need in the short-term.

I've seen argument that's we need mobility in our frontline, whereas I actually think we need someone who will make it stick up top and bring others into play.  The likes of McAtee, Sousa etc. will provide plenty of movement and pace.  What we lack, in my opinion, is someone who can hold the ball up, let others play off him and bring them into play.  Totally honest, I'm not sure if Akinde is that type of player. Everything I've seen of him is around his winning and converting of penalties...

Agree on that. People always want these nippy little whippets who can run fast but in non league they often get bullied by big bruisers so having somebody who can get the ball and keep it up front is important. If we play with two who get pushed around even though they can run fast we'll get nowhere.

Age isn't important it's if they fill the right role we need, don't really get the fear of anyone over 30 and obsession some people have with young boys.

On that note, I see that Adebayo Akinfenwa scored again last night.

I think if we can get Akinde, he is absolutely the perfect answer.

We all know how Hurst will set us up and it is imperative we have someone that the ball will stick to to get up the pitch. The bonus is Akinde can scores goals as well. Hell be the perfect partner/link man to allow the other around him to also shine.

I hope we aren’t after Akinde if his current injury is “baffling” the doctors and scientists at Gillingham. SE says Akinde can feel an injury they can’t detect.

FWIW  i dont think he will be coming here , Two main reason for me are ,  As has been said  before a few times  he does not want to be up north. And hurst wont want another player that has an injury and will be on the treatment table from week 2 There is nothing to gain for me unless them two things change big style

You’d believe anything Evans says? Have a word, the mans a flipping disgrace and should be rotting in a prison cell and no longer be allowed anywhere near the game. He’ll be on the flipping dope before October…

I’m not sure Akinde will sign but I won’t take anything Evans says as remotely factual…

I don’t think we need to panic and buy a striker just yet if there is not the right player available or financially not viable.  Taylor and LJL will be back soon and we have several players like Sousa who could play off McAtee on Saturday.  I’d rather wait if there is not the right fit for Paul Hurst and if we have injuries in this position pick up someone on loan from a premiership/championship side who is keen to impress in the coming weeks.
No point paying money to 5 strikers when you only play 2.
I trust the new owners and Paul Hurst and can’t wait for Saturday 👍😁 UTM

We have a goal scorer on the transfer list who is not being given a fair crack. He’s the most natural finisher we have had in the club for a while and has a seemingly good attitude.
Played a bit in a team that made no chances last season and for me could easily knock them away given the service.

It’s Ira  Jackson.  I liked him and think he deserves a run while we look for someone, might come good and save a few quid as he pretty cheap by all accounts.

I whole heartedly agree with this. Ira was a bright spark in a dull team last year. And has shown incredible character since being told he's not in our plans. Look I trust Hurst and rate his judgement very highly. But I honestly feel, as rare as it is, that he's getting this one completely wrong.

Being able to hold down a conversation with Radio Humberside for 45 minutes does not mean you have good character.

Hurst has seen plenty of him around the place to make a better informed judgement on his ability and character than any of us.

If he was such a goal scorer at our level, why has nobody else given him a chance? He scored goals two divisions below the league we're in now, a world away from professional football. Nowhere near good enough and too old to make it in the professional game now if he can't get in the worst team in the FL.

Hurts to read that as I had high hopes for him when he signed for Grimsby. Struck me as someone with a very good heart and the determination to do well. Hope he still becomes a success if not league then at semi professional level. No shame in that as we can't all play for Real Madrid. Likewise even at semi professional level that's still decent and something to be proud about. Hence how many football fans are good enough to play semi pro football. Very few.

He's 24 FFS, there are many players that have become FL players later on in life. Don't need to provide the obvious example.

To throw it out their, although I am not professional.. I'm 32 and I'd say (when I'm fit) I'm a better player now then i was when I was younger. Ok I've lost a bit of pace but the intelligence and experience counts for an extra yard or two..
What I'm trying to say 32-33 years old isn't a bad age at all for a professional footballer. Infact I'd say its the perfect age we should be looking for. Plenty of experience but still young enough to be fit.

Lovely bloke but from watching him on I follow how he got a professional contract anywhere baffles me. Wish him all the best though.

Good job you didn't say that last year else Holloway would have chucked a 2 year contract at you

Isn't it about time we reevaluated how we judge a player and their age. We are seeing more and more with advancements in sports science and similar players playing well into their thirties at decent levels. 30 isn't what it was.

(Yes, i just turned 30 that's why i know have this view!   )

The evidence that age is meaningless has been there for years as top players often play for top teams well into their 30's. Zlatan is still playing at the top of Italian football at 38/39, He made the Premier League look easy at 35-36 then took a little holiday for a year in Los Angeles where he was scoring wonder goals for fun. How many good players stop playing at 30 or take a massive dive in quality? Very few unless they had a serious injury that ends their career or they get too into drinking/eating and become lazy.

Jimmy Anderson ran through India's top order aged 39 yesterday morning. If you stay fit and in shape you become more wily and skilful as you get older and can mitigate any loss in pace, strength or sharpness

He's 24 FFS, there are many players that have become FL players later on in life. Don't need to provide the obvious example.

At the age of 24 Vardy was the hottest property in non-league and was signed by the biggest spenders in the National League that season before going on to score almost a goal a game for them . Not struggling to get minutes off the bench for the worst team in the FL.

Can only think of Rooney who has seen a big dive in quality in his early 30's. But then he wasn't exactly known for looking after himself particularly well.

Rooney slipped because he made the breakthrough at age 16. He’d had an incredible career before his 30’s.

But, from what I can see, other than Messi and Ronaldo, players in their 30’s see a sharp reduction in form and spend most of their time injured. I don’t even think this is my opinion, I see it as fact. I am seriously worried about this squad, they’re like Dad’s Army.

Who do you think you are kidding Heisenberg?

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Hurst confirms no interest in Akinde, doesn't know who made the enquiry, doesn't want to bring in a striker who is in his early to mid 30's

If you think old Grimsbies done...

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

I think looking after yourself helps enormously though . Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are examples of that . Likewise I always remember reading Stanley Matthews autobiography and respecting the way he only drunk orange juice. He cited this as the main reason he lasted so long in the game eg well into his 40s whereas a lot of team mates were washed up in their early 30s due to the drinking . Age does play a factor as no one can beat time but I think you can minimise the effects of it as noted .Another case is boxing. You look at the likes of Ricky Hatton. Way past his best in his early 30s due to  the effects of drinking heavy and eating to much when not training for a fight over the years .Then you have the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr who never touched alcohol and the career he had eg in his prime was the highest earning sportsman on the planet.

One life,one love .

A lot of it is just genetic as well, of course. Paul Groves was made of iron - never missed a game with injury during his time with us that I can remember and was still fit as a fiddle playing at a decent standard until he was 40. Heck, Tony Ford was still playing League football at the age of 42 and he played a lot more games than Matthews over his career - though he might not have done had it not been for the war!

Other players get increasing problems with ligament and muscle injuries which knacker them as they get older and others when they are younger as well, of course. What might Michael Owen have done with his career if he hadn't torn his hamstring so badly when still quite young? He was only half the player after that yet still scored plenty of goals.

In general, players that rely on their physical attributes - pace and power - don't tend to last the course so well as they get older. Messi has always been nippy but it is his skill which has kept him scoring as he's got older. Ronaldo went through a spell relying on pace and power but takes it easier now and is an excellent goal-hanger, letting his teammates do the running for him.

Problem at this level is that the players who are skilful enough to not rely on physical attributes tend to end their careers in the League whereas we seem to get the ones who aren't nearly effective as they become slower and more injury-prone...
