What a shame that it ended the way it did for him. Probably won't see him in a Town shirt again (fingers crossed that we do) but he has been brilliant the last few games. Had he stayed on the pitch tonight as he should have, you never know, he could have done for us what Rose did when we escaped under Jolley, but the ref had other ideas, the w@nker.
Anyway, thanks for your efforts Jay and good luck with your career.

I'd give a bollock to have him back at the club next season. Not a chance though, far too good for non league. Really hope he has a good career.

Would echo the above. In his short time he single handedly improved our midfield , for a young lad , with little previous League experience he has looked more interested, more capable and more motivated than most. Never been bullied and showed great promise. Love the way he uses his body and positioning , seems to play with alot older head on his shoulders. Given that he dropped the level to play games and boosted our performances as a result then a perfect example of a loan player. Would love to see him stay and play for us but destined for bigger and better things i would think. If you do read this then thank you for your efforts in this little corner of the world. A bright spot in an otherwise cr@ppy season. All the best. P.S ...just watch the late challenges

Great player but I think having Coke in there really helped him too - what a midfield combo that would be going into the conference.

Mr Matete nearly did it for us. Great effort by him. Hope Town can sign him for next season - if Stockport can get Paddy Madden ?!!

Matete has been superb, as others have mentioned, from day one.
A real warrior in the middle of the park, which we'd been missing for a long time.
Love the fact he gets stuck in, can play a bit, rarely loses possession, and isn't frightened of having a crack.
When I saw he'd put us 1-2 up I really thought we might win tonight and maybe...just maybe...pull off the greatest of great escapes at Scunthorpe's expense.
He grabs the game by the scruff of the neck so no complaints from me about his blood and thunder style. It sounds like his early bath was harsh by all accounts.
I would like to see Hewitt, Menayese, Clifton, Coke, John Lewis, Macca and Matete all here next season but as others have mentioned I think likelihood is we won't see Matete in a Mariners shirt again.
If that's the case, thanks a million Jay for helping us to believe, despite the odds being stacked heavily against us and best of luck with your new adventure.
PS if you're reading this and you're willing to help us win promotion at the first attempt, name your price and we'll start another Operation Promotion... You'll go down in Grimsby folklore if you do 😎 UTM!

Only slight disappointment with Matete is that he only started and end his spell with us by driving forward in games. A lot of games he played a lot deeper where he isn't anywhere near as effective. Not sure if that was down to him or instructions, but when he had the licence to push on he was something else.
Absolute no chance of us keeping him. Feels a bit like when Devitt was here in 2010, a beacon of light that we could never hold onto.

Matete said himself in an interview after the Bolton game that he’s contracted to fleetwood next season.

Except, sadly, it isn't. He confirmed in a recent interview that he's under contract there for next year. He won't wanna join us in the conference. Even if he doean't start the season for Fleetwood, he'll get snapped up by a league 2 club on loan.

The sending off was a yellow card offence. though that said he made a couple of very clumsy tackles earlier in the game which shouldve probably warranted a yellow so it would've been a second yellow. I have a feeling the ref regrets not carding him earlier and essentially stacked it as a second yellow card offence to make it a red (hope that makes sense).
Real driving force in the midfield with an eye for goal. If he can cut out the silly tackles then he will be a top player.

Are you saying the ref gave him a red for a yellow offence because he should have booked him earlier. After thought shouldn't come into it. Its either yellow, or not. Not a red.

Agree with the sentiments .No way was that a red card last night. Likewise for me the best player I saw in a Grimsby shirt in the recent Bradford game. Technically looked good. I dont think like others have said will want to play conference. I feel could be a league 1 player at least if he continues to improve and maintains consistency.

Shouldn't, but it happens all the time. Manager's get in a ref's ear at half time and make him feel bad or question a decision made and it can have an affect on what he does later. Probably got complaints he was being too lenient with Matete and they'd probably have a point, he probably should have been booked much earlier in the game for a bad tackle and wasn't. Doesn't mean what he was sent off for was worthy of an instant red, probably combination of tunnel talks and being sick of him carrying on with bad tackles and dangerous play after being spoken to 4 times.

Can I just say,.as sad as it will be to not see Matete in a Town shirt again, Evan Khouri looks a player. Lots of game time for this lad next season. Get him on a longer contract sharpish.

I agree that could be what happens, but it’s not really fair as if he got booked earlier he might have been more careful in the rest of the match. The second yellow offence might nit have occurred:

If an opponent had made that tackle on a Town player at BP every fan in the ground would have been off their seat screaming for a straight red. At least I hope they would ! Would love to see him back.

Yeah I think that's why he got a straight red too, shouldn't work like that but it seems like it. Matete was very lucky not to have been booked up to that point.

I think some would but not all . Looking at it again I dont think it was a dirty challenge at all. Foot a bit high but that was it. Just the referees interpretation. Some refs would not have given that as a red. Possibly appeal ?.

Last I've seen of him in a Town shirt, sod paying another £20 to watch our last two matches of the season. Quality player though, he brought a bit of enjoyment into a relentlessly tough to watch season. Really hope he kicks on and has a great season in 2021/22 wherever he is. I think he'll probably be in that Fleetwood starting lineup before long.

What a good player he is. What a shame he's not going to sign for us, far too good for non league.
It shows to me that Hurst has a good eye for a player, and perhaps he can get another player of his quality to replace him.
Good luck and best wishes for the future young man.

Interesting to read about Ivan Toney's story today in BBC sport.Think Hurst may of worked with him briefly at Shrewsbury. Newcastle didnt give him the platform to perform wheres others did and his career flourished. On another note interesting as well watching Antoine Griezmanns story on Netflix . Many clubs rejected him as a youngster and he was going to give the game up. Real Sociedad finally gave him that chance and he began to flourish . Confidence thing as is often the case in football. Certain players need to be loved more than others in order to perform.

Town did appeal the red card but it was turned down. Matete is now heading back to Fleetwood.

Evidently subject to interest from Stoke and another Championship club with a price of £800k quoted in the Sunday paper so think there’s little chance of him returning to us next season. Good luck to him.

Well if he goes to Millwall I reckon he would go into the first team, but I dont think he would be in Stokes starting XI. Therefore Hurst could try to get him back on loan next season

And turning a bang average right back/defensive midfielder into a very solid central defence partner for that Mansfield reserve.

Looks like Fleetwood are going to have a battle to actually keep Matete. I'm not sure of the original source, but numerous articles that Championship clubs Stoke and Millwall are leading the race for a fee worth 800K.

It also depends who's around you. I was a decent Sunday league player. We brought in a semi pro once. Best game I ever had. You'd never find yourself in trouble, so my confidence grew and grew. Must also work at higher levels.

I think its a lot more competitive the higher up you go .More money but more pressure to perform. Having said that I think bringing in players of better quality can help other players development. The key is though I feel is how much a player is prepared to work at his game and improve. I always admired the stance of Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes when they were in the Manchester United youth team. From reading around whilst others went out on the beer and often overdone it these two and a few others didnt go as they wanted to sacrifice the drink in order to improve.
