The ultra pressing game is not a long ball game. Leeds are probably its best exponents, and no-one could accuse them of being a hoofball team. The Bielsa approach is what I was advocating in the Just Back thread. It’s all about not giving your opponents the time to settle on the ball in their own half, and then hitting them hard and quickly when in possession.
Barnsley do both. That is the way Lyons wanted Town to play. He told the defenders to hit a long ball into the channel then everyone pushes up to win the 2nd/3rd ball. He wanted 3-5-2 to get full backs forward and pressure their wingers and full backs. Paul Wilkinson was crucial because he would just run and run. Gary Lund hated it. As far as Hurst is concerned he used it in the promotion season with that diagonal ball to Monkhouse. To be honest, purist fan though I am I would accept anything that brings us 3 points.

If I remember right from the Lyons era, we did the booting part but none of the running. At least not quick enough to pressure the opposition. I think that’s what irritates me a lot of the time about Hurst/Jolley/Slade II. It was all kick and no rush.

Barnsley v Grimsby Town, 08 May 1979 Score 2-1 to Barnsley Competition League Division Four Attendance 21,261
Largest gate in Division Four for ten years I believe.
We ended up having a "lock-in" in a pub not far from Oakwell after the game.
What a season that was.

Season, or ‘session’?

Allardyce descended into parody but I quite enjoyed watching his Bolton side. Get the ball up the pitch, hold it up and let the likes of Okocha and Djorkæff work their magic from there.
Ditto Barnes and Blissett under Graham Taylor at Watford.
Exactly, an initial quick ball to the forwards doesn't rule out playing football afterwards. If you can make it stick, you play the football in the other team's half

I used to enjoy how furious Bolton's style made Arsene Wenger. He was often fuming over a loss to Allardyce's style, likening them to playing rugby, almost suggesting they were breaking rules. When in reality it was the simple fact that whilst he may be one of the most successful managers of his time he was just upset that he couldn't break down and beat a simple and effective tactic.
