It’s an odd one that I’ve never understood. If you’re a young athlete with a bit of cash (at least relative to age) then it’s basically a license to shàg what you want. And good luck to you.

Why so many choose to ‘settle down’ and have kids at a young age, only to be exposed by a tabloid newspaper for being unfaithful, I don’t quite get.

I actually made the comment based on no evidence, just a hunch. I would be interested to see factual evidence but still maintain my belief that most don't start a family until their late twenties at the earliest.

Therefore moving from rented accommodation in place A to rented accommodation in place B isn't the major upheaval it may appear. If you are being offered £800 a week in Oldham or £1,000 a week in Grimsby over 3 years surely you would pick Grimsby??? Even if you are young and single you can disappear off to whatever major city takes your fancy Saturday night and then get back Sunday evening to your gaff ready for Monday morning.

£1,000 a week to live near Grimsby or £800 a week to live near Oldham (Manchester!!!!). Even if you lived in Oldham you could have your night out in Manchester and get the tram back home.

Absolutely. I wanted them to beat Southend too, but they failed.

I don’t think Scunny will go down, so I want to see them take points from all our relegation rivals. What an awful situation!

Have you heard the Peter Swann interview from the past week or so? Scunny are in big trouble financially. Could be a painful transfer window for them.

Well, yeah, of course a 20% difference in pay is going to make a difference. My point was more that if the packages on offer were equal and one meant you didn’t need to relocate, then more often than not the player is going to choose the option with less upheaval.

Ultimately, Oldham as an example will have more players within a commutable catchment than we do, making recruitment generally easier.

Our problem is exacerbated by the fact that not only are we 80 or 90 miles from Leeds and Sheffield, but we are also coastal. Not many footballers live in the sea, so the chance of a player already living within commutable distance is reduced by somewhere in the region of 50%.

It’s not reasonable to use it as an excuse for underperformance, but it shouldn’t be dismissed as a non-issue either.

I half-listened to an interview with their manager. Talk of bridging loans - as damaging as our much maligned ‘benign loans’ may have been, bridging loans typically carry eye watering interest rates and are a usually pretty desperate act.

I’ve long predicted this, even before Covid, but Scunny are fúcked.

I agree with all your points regarding location and commutable distance. So we might have to just swallow the pill and offer that little bit more, maybe not the 20% I used as a trite example!

I believe most young men would be fickle enough, in a good way, to move for an extra £100 a week over 2/3 years.

I have gone full circle now and acknowledged that it might be a small issue, but money would talk for most.

Absolutely, and therein lies the rub. We are geographically inconvenient and if recent accounts are true, have been making financially underwhelming offers. Those two things combined may largely explain the last decade and a half.

We can’t move the town (although we can move our training ground), but offering attractive contracts (within our means) and selling the area better might go a long way.

Barrow and Bradford games are off today, and the other relegation threatened sides have tough looking fixtures. A win today could see us jump up the table a couple of places in a best case scenario, or drop into the bottom two if results go against us.
