The idea that Rob Scott is in there just shows cold hard statistics mean naff all!

Out of those I would give the greatest credence to Lawrie McMenemy who took over a club in the doldrums in the 4th division with hardly enough players, played a brand of football that suited the division at the time, and created such a buzz around Grimsby it is difficult to describe. The gates were huge, we won the title and he became a God-like figure.

Like everything else, it is about context rather than the hard data but an interesting read nonetheless.

Infinitely harder to retain a high win percentage against the Man City, Forest, Birmingham and Sunderlands of the world.

Anyone on the fishy old enough to have watched the shankley team and was they as good as he said ( doubt if there is many supporters from this era left )

I was a teenager playing for my school team on Saturdays when Shankly was manager
but still managed to see many of the games.

Yes, the football we played was a joy to watch particularly our inside forwards and wing
halves ( midfielders to you lot ) keeping possession, passing the ball around on the ground.

Obviously the pace of the game was much slower in those days and fitness levels very
different from today's. Our top scorer with over thirty goals in a season was Billy Cairns
who at the time was 39 years old

One story that always amused me was at that time Grimsby Borough Police had the the
best police football team in the country, many of them being ex-professionals and were
invited to train with the Town team.

One day Shanks got booked for speeding. That was the end of those the training sessions.
