Why does Eastwood not lift his hands above his head to catch the ball? That could have easily have been a penalty a few minutes ago

I'll take that, how we did it I don't know. They need to improve in the second half.

Match report pass it along the back then aimless punt up the line. Another team that looks quicker and cleverer. We have to do something different 2nd half or be very lucky

That's two Walsall efforts we've missed in this game now because the clowns operating ifollow have been too slow to cut back to the main camera from replays / half-time.

Need more support for Rose. I'd like to see Clifton closer to him and the wingers further forward past their wing backs. We can still sit 6 behind the ball if need be. Whenever Eisa got the ball first half he was miles away from goal

Pity we haven't got a lump of a target man to bring on to rough up their centre backs a bit. One piece we are missing.

Dead ball delivery is a lot better than it has been for a while.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

2nd half town have been by far the stronger side and we shoukd be more ahead - still hesitation around the crossing aspect of the game though.

For all the possession we have we just don't work opposition keepers enough. Aside from Eisa shooting from distance the only real chance we created was was when Rose headed straight at the keeper from 6 yards out. After today we've got the lowest xG in the entire league (a mere 3.5 expected goals after 5 games) showing we're not creating quality scoring opportunities, and we really need to massively improve in the top third of the pitch if we want to actually achieve anything this season.

Admittedly we didn’t win so it’s a big ‘if’ but if we had held on we’d be sat here with 8 points from 5 matches. That’s 1.6 ppg and, as Aldi alludes to, would almost certainly be enough for the playoffs this season. There are so many promotion favourites, promotion hopefuls and managerial changes to come that it’s likely to be a low total to get into the playoffs / top 3. I’m not saying we will make that but it’s been a steady start.

The fanfare around Vernam returning was odd at the time. When he left, it wasn’t so much the fact he left, more the ridiculous reason why. So far Vernam has looked a waste, and let’s face it, only stood out in a poor town side. He’s got some huge improvements to make to his game. Still, I’m not gonna cry myself to sleep over picking up a point away from home.

Without Eisa we would be just about bottom.. All hurst is bothered about is treading water with his booooring style of play. About time Stockwood and co got there heads out the sand and did some shouting instead of hiding in the boardroom with the door locked.

It's in Greater Manchester. There's an IKEA in Ashton for those inclined that way.

Two points dropped imo, steady start which I think based on what's happening is all that's going to be needed to improve and finish in and around the playoffs as it looks like literally anyone can beat anyone. Colchester have been tonked every game before today and Gillingham hadn't conceded a goal. Colchester have gone to Gillingham and smashed them 3-0. We lack that cutting edge but ' if ' we get it then we'll be a very dangerous side for any team at this level.

It's still a reasonable start but we should have won that one .
Still feel like we will draw a lot of games , it's not so bad against Mansfield at home and Walsall away .
But we have already drawn two we should have won really .
Can we continue this steady start against the bigger teams AND then put all the teams to bed convincingly who we should beat after the difficult start ?
Time will tell .

Where would we be without eisa - have to say we are very poor going forward other than his absolute piledrivers and vernam looks a passenger. Khan can't come back soon enough and yet he wasn't a player that nailed down a starting spot last season in a midtable side, concerning.

Most teams will lose more than 1 game from those 5 fixtures we have played.
Getting support closer to Rose clearly needs addressing, as does the left back position unfortunately.
We are improving and we have better players than last year, definitely not all doom and gloom. We are not that far off.......

Is it all that concerning? It was an almost universal observation when the fixtures came out that we had one of the toughest starts possible, and so it has proved; barring Walsall, all of our opponents are in the top 10 and only Wimbledon (currently 4th) weren’t amongst the sides fancied to do well. Today was frustrating in that we should have seen off a mediocre Walsall side once we got in front, but we’ve ultimately only lost 1 of our opening 5 games. The 21/22 season, when we had that barnstorming start to the season, was a Hurst anomaly - it normally takes his Town sides a little time to get going. We’ve had a steady if unspectacular start, Eisa’s rockets aside, but Hurst’s CV suggests he will iron out the kinks in due course. I think it’s reasonable to feel mildly frustrated we haven’t taken 3 points today, but “concerned” goes a touch too far for me. We’re ticking over alright, and will get better as time goes on, imho.

For half an hour of the second half we looked good. Got men forward and played with more freedom. I hate to say it as I like him 1st time around, Vernam is offering nothing except a couple of decent crosses first half.

"Without the goals of Eisa we would be nowhere" say a few posters.
Well yeah, that would be true of many sides if you expunged the goals of their top scorer.
A whole new take on negativity.

It’s not the goals it’s the nature of them . Wonder goals are not going to see you finish above mid table

Well that was pretty underwhelming but nice to see an Eisa rocket up close and personal! Aside from some moments of quality it was a pretty stale fixture over all.

Our start is deeply concerning, because we've got the most impotent attack in the league after 5 games: We simply do not create enough goalscoring opportunities, and our start has been masked by by Eisa smashing in 4 worldies, which simply isn't a tactic we can rely on for the rest of the season. Our problem last season was that we actually had quite a good xG rating, but we weren't converting the chances we created due to poor finishing. So far this season we're outperforming xG (good!), but creating very very little in the way of good quality chances, and that's a deep concern. People are reading too much into the 'quality' of the opponents we've played so far and not paying enough attention to how they've performed in the first 5 games this season. Aside from Wimbledon who've conceded 2 goals in 5 matches, we've played teams who've conceded 9, 7, 8 and 10 goals respectively this season and created absolutely intercourse all against them all. It's a big worry.

Dont want to repeat myself but 3 years for Vernam… dear me
Thought he did alright today. Got plenty of crosses in and worked tirelessly going backwards. He's not in top form clearly, but he'll be a fine signing if he stays fit. Interesting Hurst suggesting he's still getting up to speed from a knee op.

Don't know if it's anything to do with Vernam but Hurst asked me if I could kick with my left foot and run more than 100 yds. in 90 mins.

Regardless of how much data we have on all the players we signed, it will take some time to assess all the stats from the games we have played. As has been mentioned, the transfer window is still open and it will take about 10 games to assess the strengths and weaknesses of this squad. I'm sure the coaching and analytical systems we have in place will iron out our strengths and weaknesses.

The issue I think for haters of Hurstball is it's looking more pedestrian than ever + the obvious flaw has not been resolved . And even for a Hurst fan it would be hard to disagree
It's very predictable isn't it ?
Are we just the same as last season but with slightly better players ?
I like Hurst , think he is a good manager and a safe pair of hands .
But like Sir Alan is it just a case of it 'going stale ' with him being here such a length of time over his two spells ?
The positive is you always know what you are going to get (barring the odd game ) The negative is you always know what you are going to get
But then it's a case of be careful what you wish for to isn't it . I suppose time will tell with this to , but will the fans take a season of home games in the same style as last season with a similiar finishing position ?

Yes, because we've been fortunate enough that Eisa's scored 4 screamers which have helped us to win and draw a few games. The point I am making and that you are missing is that he is not going to score from 20+ yards regularly, and unless the rest of the team start creating more goalscoring opportunities than they've done in the first five games this season we're going to start falling further down the table.

I'm not missing your point, but I and others have been shouting out for good No9 for nearly 2 years. Hurst admitted over 12 months ago that we needed one, but we are still waiting.

It's not that we necessarily need a "no.9", it's that our combined attacking threat, which includes forwards, midfielders and full backs just isn't creating anything like enough goalscoring opportunities. Is that down to the tactics, or is it down to the players? It's difficult to say, but it's a conundrum really Hurst needs to solve.

Have to agree with this. We are not making enough good chances and as good a player as Rose is, he's never been prolific, but he will struggle to score more than a handful this season if we don't start making chances for him. I see Newport, who were complaining about not being able to attract players and were being beaten to signings "by the likes of Grimsby", are knocking in 3's and 4's, with their top scorer already on 6. It always seems to be the achilles heel of Hurst in that his sides are always competitive, but very rarely do they run away with games. Hopefully, as the side beds in and settles down, we will start to create the chances we did last season, because we have better players now to take more of them. As you mentioned earlier, our problem last season wasn't chance creation, it was chance taking, so now we have better technicians in the side, we have to create more for them to do their thing.

There seems to me to always be a lot of fluffy rhetoric about ‘getting on the front foot’ and ‘getting the crowd going’ but we never do. I’m not convinced that every attacking player we sign doesn’t listen so surely it’s got to be the message, hasn’t it? We seem to be wittering on about dropping points from winning positions but we could (and maybe should) have been behind in the three games I’ve seen and it seems like the same should have happened today.

After we scored we most definitely did not sit back. Several corners, Eisa hit the bar and Rose was unlucky with a header.

I think its a lack of anyone with genuine pace and anyone with any height in our forward line that is the biggest problem, without either of these things its difficult to create much, as we are seeing. I'm not surprised to see Wimbledon doing quite well, they had that Davison guy up front against us in the first half and he caused our defence a lot of bother and was a good target man, and then they tool him off and brough El Hammadi on who was lightning quick and he also caused us big problems. We've got no one in our front line as good as them two.

Nail on head. We have very little physicality to compete for first and second balls which means we have to rely on good movement and precise passing to have a chance of playing through the thirds. Playing the channels tires our wingers who don't have clever feet to beat a man. Our subs don't bring an added dimension. It was telling that it was 'Bosch multi tool' Harry who moved across to replace Vernam as we had no target man to aim for and no pace to terrorise their ten men. Hurst says we need to be able to play in different ways as circumstances demand but has he got the room in his toolbag for some new specialist gear?

We have a very good number 9 for this league in Rose, what we need is an upgrade on Taylor to make a good number 9 work.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

I think Rose is meant to be playing the taylor role, but we aren't getting any 1 close enough to him.

Funny how the xg and losing points from winning positions are totally separated.
If you are winning then your xg may well be less. If we had been behind everytime it would be different.
Saying that we clearly need something/someone to help out up top, I like Rose but I don't think we are making the most of him.

I honestly believe we have a good squad. We just need another winger with pace and an eye for goal plus Wilson back fit. We then need to push more men forward in support of Rose. Take a bit of a risk (or not as most teams do it anyway) have our wingers right up on their full backs, get someone like Wilson or Clifton right up tight behind Rose. Have those 4 options going forward, if we lose possession we should still have a minimum of 5 behind the ball so no need to panic. Just go out and be more adventurous, we did this for 20mins in the second half and we looked good.
