Just to show what tremendous support we are having away from home - these are the followings thus far:

Altrincham      125 miles    1251  (mid week)
Stockport         118             1200  (mid week)
(Kidderminster 165              900)
Woking             208             889
Maidenhead     229             828
Wealdstone      180             794   (mid week)
Bromley            202             688   (mid week)
Bromsgrove      158             562   (FA Cup and live on TV with early k.o.)
Torquay             322            467

i presume ours must be the biggest away support in the division?

Surely it is, and significantly better than many a team in L2 and L1.

Average of 873 in the league with some really shít fixture / midweek combinations thrown in for good measure. Our only two away games within 180 miles have both been on a Tuesday night.

Chaos mentions League One and Two - I honestly think there's several teams in the Championship who'd struggle to compete with that. It's hard to find complete stats for it but here's a link for Championship away followings in the middle of August, right the start of the season on a Saturday when the weather was nice and we'd all just been allowed back en masse into football grounds:

https://fanbanter.co.uk/every-leagues-away-attendances-at-the-weekend-16th-august-2021/2/

700 Fulham at Huddersfield
430 Bristol City at Boro (fewer than we took to Torquay)
350 Sheffield United at Swansea (fewer than any following we've taken this season, even Bromsgrove)

Without a shadow of a doubt, punching massively above our weight when it comes to away travel. We've been doing that for a good 10 years or so, but this season is something else.

Good work FI.

It’s even better than those figures show. Didn’t we sell 1100 tickets for Woking but they didn’t scan everyone in. Seem to remember Kristine saying something about it.

It’s been said before, but we have so many exiles all over the place that there is always a contingent for whom the away game is fairly close. The other big reason is that we’re also slightly mad 😉.

I think our away following is the best in the league considering a "local" derby is 80 miles away. 80 miles from central London covers more than 11 clubs but they don't get the away support Town gets.

The one word you always hear on the radio at away games over the commentary is "Mariners".

Well done to all traveling fans from all over the country.

There was a stat in the mid/late 90s that I used for my dissertation, that had only 3 other clubs (outside the premier league) with a higher away:home ratio than town. I seem to think it was wolves, Portsmouth and someone bizarre like bury.

The mudrats over the water took about 400 to West Brom on Tuesday night!

Yeah didn't they take less to Huddersfield in a championship game than we did to Torquay in the fifth tier, absolutely incredible support. We'll done Town.

It’s cracking support but I always think when clubs start banging on about attendance you run the risk of sounding like Newcastle
Fans…

It shows a commitment and I guess that whilst we have only ever really had a solid 5000 every week, we have fans far and wide.

That said, we can’t mock the afflicted so to speak, we’re very good with the rose tinted specs are town fans…

I’ve been to West Brom, Wolves, etc with town and there’s only been 4/500 or so…it tends to go in fits and starts and I think for town, being at this level, we win more, it’s easier on the eye and if I’m honest, aside from the obsession with moving our KO times, the away games are sometimes much more pleasant.

I’d like to see how clubs who suffer geographically like us compare…

Correct. It’s good to see, but starting to run the risk of sucking ourselves off at times this season.

On Twitter a couple of days ago one of the 'on this day in history' things came up and that said we won somewhere in front of 875 in total.

I thought 'bloody hell, that's our away support at the moment'.

I'm surprised how few travelled to some of the Championship games quoted above.

Torquay's been the smallest, but was easily the loudest of all the Southern away trips so far this season. Wealdstone definitely the flattest. Maidenhead was also a bit flat too. Aside from being disappointing results, the main similarity between those two was how scattered about we were. In two different stands, but even then still split up further as there were separate roofed areas and divides. We were in different stands at Woking too but it felt much more like Football League away day as it was 4000+ and a full stadium. Bromley started off a bit flat too but a combination of going 1-0 up, getting reffed out of it, being goaded by their players and being urine wet through cranked the atmosphere up pretty well.

Absolutely fantastic, but just putting things into perspective  taking nothing away but I think if we ever do get back to the championship paying £40 £50 a ticket would certainly have an effect on our numbers, any of those teams you mentioned apart from Fulham would possibly be selling out most of all their away allocation if we we’re to swap places.

Our away figures could be refined with applying some other factors:

The Grimsby area is very isolated geographically.  This means frequent away travel is both more difficult and more expensive. Especially when compared to a team based centrally, eg Walsall.  Midweek away matches will sometimes mean that a return rail journey the same night is not possible.

...............previous post sent before completed.

Grimsby is also a lower than average social-economic area.  This would normally deter expensive away travel.

This factor, and the earlier factors, means that barriers have been overcome that would normally limit our away numbers.  This makes our excellent away support numbers even more impressive.

We have a higher share of exiles than many clubs done south.  This increases away totals at southern based clubs.  But not the 1,200 at Stockport.

That Sheffield United figure is surprising. I don't know what the asterisk denotes. This article states the Blades have had an average following of 2,075 since then:

Be great to see attendances like that in the Osmond every week, I think the championship is a totally different league to when we was in it. I’ll be happy with league one nowadays if we ever get there

We are currently taking more than Lincoln and Hull put together - both had sub 500 for midweek games in Lancashire. I know it's like Town playing in Louth but Stockport had a very impressive 5,100 at Bolton on Saturday - half the crowd.

All good points, but re: your last paragraph, the trajectory of North East Lincs over the past few decades (opportunities etc for people, younger people moving to cities in greater numbers etc.) has meant there are exiles all over - Leeds and Manchester have loads of Mariners based there. So they would contribute to Stockport, Altrincham etc away followings
