A few days ago Norwich City announced a new shirt sponsorship deal with BK8, a gambling company.

Today…

[tweet]1402898331249123330[/tweet]

Deal terminated after a backlash from supporters of Norwich City.

I have made my views against gambling advertising on this forum before.

I know Town don’t have a gambling sponsorship deal, but even so it would be nice if the new owners clarify whether they would accept sponsorship from a gambling company if offered.

Luton Town have that policy.

I think the backlash was more aimed at the questionable marketing strategy of said gambling firm which…. was basically just young Asian women wearing not many clothes 😂

The current state of the gambling industry is a real mess. The bookies absolutely rinse the vulnerable customers. At the same time, they have huge teams of analysts studying their customers betting behaviour. If someone appears to know what they're doing, even if they are barely breaking even, then they will be restricted or banned. The flashy offers like "Money back as a free bet if Kane scores!" are typically withdrawn from you within a week or two unless you're losing significant amounts on other bets. They're purely designed to get people to sign up.

The betting exchanges like Betfair typically offer the best odds and don't restrict winning punters. However, even they have a "Premium Charge" for customers who make a profit, and this can be as high as 60% of your profits.

Given all that, I would agree with a ban on advertising! The industry is absolutely rotten at the moment.

I'd love to see gambling advertising banned.

I'd also love to see any firm with a UK gaming licence be banned from squirrelling all their profits away in the Isle of Man, Cayman Islands or Gibraltar.

I've seen people moan about Youngs being our sponsor in the past, but honestly I'd much rather have a local company with national (international?) presence than a gambling company.

The club could do worse than getting involved with the "Gambling with Lives" campaign:

When it comes to sponsorship, we have some decent sized businesses locally that I'm sure can provide competitive sponsorship. As a lower league team I like seeing us sponsored by a big local company.

But once you get to the Championship and if you want to compete, I'm not so sure the local companies would pay enough.

The many gambling companies are all chasing a quid themselves so slinging a million at a championship club seems small change in the grand scheme of things.

I have a huge issue with gambling personally and see no point nor have ever gambled. It’s personal choice but I’ve seen folk waste more cash and time on gambling than alcohol.

I’d happily see it banned in football but it won’t happen with the cash that’s being made…
