Team news: Two changes for Mariners
Paul Hurst makes two changes as Giles Coke returns to the side, while Sam Habergham doesn't make the squad as Luke Waterfall comes in, and it looks like Harry Clifton will start at left-back.

TOWN: McKeown, Hewitt, Waterfall, Menayese, Clifton, Khouri, Matete, Spokes, Coke, John-Lewis (c), Hanson.

Subs: Eastwood, Scannell, Lamy, Adlard, Jackson Jr, Green.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

So does it show that Hurst is clearly not a Williams fan too?

Still only 5 subs in the National League. Hurst is weaning us off 7 subs gradually.

It looks to me that hurst rates spokes and I’m pleased for him as it was a massive step up to L2 and it looks like he’s earning another contract. Sure there’s a player in him .

Hopefully its more of a 3 at the back rather then a 2, we saw enough times that Waterfall and Menayesse wasn't a good partnership

I don't think Hurst rates spokes has highly as some, I remember when talking about him once and Hurst said some players get better when they don't play as early on in his tenure Spokes was nowhere to be seen! I think Hurst rates him more than Rose however, and I think it's touch and go if spokes earns another contract.

Yeah thats more like it for me. He rates spokes more than Williams and Rose, that isn't saying much though, doesn't mean he will want him next season. I'm far from convinced myself. If he is with us next season it would have to be at 4th choice at best for CM, maybe 5th, we need far far better to challenge for the conference title.

Crofty absolutely scathing about Holloway in the pre match chat, and also critical to a much lesser degree of Hurst.

Can only see the "Watch live now" option on the GTFC website.

Where's the "Listen live now" option?

I've paid the £45

What's he said?

Holloway: Arrogance and complacency being the attitude, the manager treating games as if they were practice matches and the result didn't matter. In particular highlighted 2 things ordinary fans on here were angry and dismayed about - knocking it about at the back when we weren't able to resulting in repeatedly conceding unnecessarily, and conceding 15 or 20 free kicks for teams to attack us from.

Hurst: took too long to improve us, seemed to me to suggest that players who weren't up to it were allowed to be in and around the team for too long initially before Hurst made his choices on a more settled team.

Well he does more harm then actual good so yeah. Might as well play with 10 men and cut down on the freekicks he gives away constantly.

But my question was why he was out there and no Hanson as I'd only just switched on as they were coming out the tunnel and was wondering if we knew why.

So out of the 40 odd players used this season 1) we can only name 6 subs and 2) Green is one of them then gets into the team due to Hanson’s not playing, and then people thought we could avoid relegation!!!

Tondeur seemed to allude to the Covid rules meaning we couldn’t take more players etc or put more people on the bus. Not really sure why those sort of rules are necessary or do anything...other then negatively impact teams

Waterfall, Green in oh no, we're relegated.  Waterfall poor, Green not even poor. Bad management taking only 17 players. Always a risk of injury. Sums up this season. We are doomed.

Oldham seem to have tons of space.  We need Green to do a Roy of the Rovers overhead kick to win the game and walk into GTFC folklore.  First, has to get into position, not be offside and not concede a free kick.

Hurst randomly threw a plate of chicken wings and it just happened to hit Hanson.

Oldham 1-0 Town.

Phew, saved a tenner.

So out of the 40 odd players used this season 1) we can only name 6 subs and 2) Green is one of them then gets into the team due to Hanson’s not playing, and then people thought we could avoid relegation!!!

Even a clocks correct twice a day, that’s out of 24 hours, lots of minutes and even more seconds ( couldn’t be #rseded to work it out) so even Green over 40 odd games should manage to kick the ball correctly twice, think he’s had his quota for this season now though!

I'll take anything today, just living in hope and their goalie was routed, surprised by the shot from that distance.

Scunny losing, long shot but it could only could be us or them. Another goal will help.

Spokes nearly had a chance to be a hero again. So close.

Come on Town let's nick a late winner.

Taking chances has been our issue all season. We’ve created some gilt edged chances and taken none of them...

That wasn't a difficult pass for Green.

Edit: or it wouldn't be to any average pro footballer

Simple ball into acres of space was on for Green there and he still flipping overhit it. Simple flipping ball!
Supposed to be a professional footballer FFS.
You'd be calling a Sunday League player for that.

Credit to the manager. I wouldn't have picked green in a million years.
I would have 'furloughed' him 6 months ago
Such a good manager - were lucky to have him

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Matete looking a much better player again with Coke back in the side. He's a really solid holding player so the ones that like to get forward work much better knowing there is somebody they can rely on.

Bets had been exchanged at 100/1 on Betfair on us staying up. Doubt anyone will be laying the price that short now.

So have to win last 3 games (9 pts) and to score a ton load of goals due to -21 GD.  Barrow just need 2 point from there 3 to stay up.  Think the players have done themselves proud but too late i'm afraid.

No, Barrow still need 3 from 3.
Scunny 2 from 3.*
ColU 2 from 2.*

* assume Ming we don’t make up 11 GD on them

It's hard not to think of all those silly late goals we conceded this season

Two great goals from Town today and a lot better football , I know he's done great for us all season but I feel we seem to look better when he's not playing footballing wise

They haven't given up. Would have been easy to roll over after going a goal down.

Still looking like we are down, but if either Scunts, Barrow or Colchester have a complete collapse in their last two or three game, you never know.

Of Course it means us winning the last three games. I wont get excited just yet. But if we do beat Exeter on Tuesday, it's going to get pretty tense.

Good to read . Challenge is keeping performances up Saturday ,Tuesday. Takes it out of the players emotionally and physically.  Big ask Tuesday to keep the levels high.

Yes, and they will be giving it everything. Good chance they will win.

I would say that  winning the the last three and getting to 49 points might well be enough to save us.  Bloody big ask though.

We have to beat Exeter next which  won't be easy and hope that Southend win against Barrow.

What a great performance from the lads! Proper team performance as well - Clifton outstanding,Coke did everything expected of him and broke the play up and distribution was excellent,Matete although was at fault for there goal certainly made up for it and never stopped running,Mayannese solid as ever and would love to hang onto him for next season, equally well done to all eleven and PH!- I know it's possibly just waiting for the inevitable but I feel proud to be a Town fan tonight!

I thought we were going to get battered after 10 minutes. Thought apart from that and the first ten minutes of the second half we were the better side.

Clifton MOM, Matete bar their goal was very good. Hewitt, Meyenese and Watefall did well.

Not pretty but we've ground out another result and live to fight another day.

Odds are stacked against us. We have little or no margin for error. But who knows gives Barrow and one or two others something to think about .,..for a couple of days anyway.

To be fair if you'd asked 6 weeks ago I would have said not only would we go down but it would have been confirmed before now. I didn't see us getting anywhere near the  40 Pts we have now

Just gotta keep going . 3 games left keep fighting to the end.

That was fun! As others have said, everyone played a big part in that win against a very lively Oldham side, but Harry Clifton was brilliant today, and as for Matete's winning goal, what a strike! It just makes you realize how much is missing without spectators. If there had been a couple of thousand Town fans behind that goal when that went in, there would have been absolute pandemonium!

The vultures had gathered over Boundry Park and then, to help them, one of our golden boys Matete help Oldham score. Well, that was going to be it, top of the league scorers were going to have a field day.

Nothing left on the carcus but skin and bone, but wait that out of favour man Green has a shot and no it wasn't going to make it to the keeper who can't believe it's a shot and it's in. There's a tad of flesh on those bones and the skin moves. Clifton and Matete put themselves about and we're suddenly holding our own. No Hanson, no Hab and few subs but the carcus is moving in a positive way. Am I dreaming, no I'm watching and it's happening.

Matete picks the ball up and all is forgiven, he crashes it into the net and the vultures have left. The flock have separated on their individual ways to Barrow, Colchester and yes, it can't be but it is, Scunny.

We live to fight again on a mission not impossible. Exeter is all to fight for and our mouths are just, and only just, above water.

I understand there’s talk of allowing some sort of crowd in for the last couple of premiership games, any chance the same for Cambridge, if so will it only be home support only.

So out of the 40 odd players used this season 1) we can only name 6 subs and 2) Green is one of them then gets into the team due to Hanson’s not playing, and then people thought we could avoid relegation!!!

Interesting snippet in Hurts post match when asked about subs....he basically replied....those players who have earnt a spot are on it. Would rather be short and have players who he thinks have earnt a spot than have a bench full of people he doesnt think deserve a place. Certainly struck me as not being a quality issue, purely about attitude/ application of those players out in the cold.

No, because the government date is May 17 I think.

(Coincidentally, Cambridge is May 8, so maybe we'll go down twice on the same date)

Let’s not underestimate the size of the task - we need to win our last three games. No small feat for a side which finds itself bottom of the table for a reason.

But Scunny are absolutely toxic at the minute and have two tough away games coming up at Newport and Bradford. The concept of taking one game at a time has never been more relevant than now - one strike and we’re out. But if we can find a way to take it to the last day, I fancy us.

Big IF that, and the bookies odds correctly reflect our likelihood of survival. But stranger things genuinely have happened in football, and this is the strangest of seasons in the strangest of times.

Think that's the first time this season we've won two Saturday's on the trot, which is a sad state of affairs, only the second time we won two games on the trot mainly thanks to sleepy Hollowbrain!

We haven't won two on the trot as we lost on Tuesday.

Great result today and last Saturday though.

We're not on the canvass yet. Up the bloody Mariners!

Still a long shot to stay up, but think three more wins will do it.

Can only win one game at a time tho.

I watched Jimmy Glass move up the pitch and be on the end of the corner kick in the 90 something minute against Plymouth - anything is possible - no matter how improbable

Oh can you imagine the ejaculation adulation if that happened, sending Scunny down?

Jimmy has a part in Town history of course, bungling a back pass from his defender to allow Town to put the ball into the box for Eddie Howe to head away for the corner that would result in THAT Wayne Burnett goal at Wembley. It’s like it’s written in the stars somehow.

Yes, and they will be giving it everything. Good chance they will win.

I would say that  winning the the last three and getting to 49 points might well be enough to save us.  Bloody big ask though.

As others have said, Southend are irrelevant to us. We need to win all our 3 remaining games to have a chance of survival. If we did that we would finish above Southend even if they win their remaining matches because of our game in hand.

Genuine question as a non-betting man. A Town fan on Humberside claimed our odds of staying up had dropped from 500-1 to 250-1 following today’s results. I’ve no idea if that was just a metaphor or whether that’s a bet that could actually be placed.

If the latter, any idea how or where? I fancy a dabble.

May well not matter by then but Southend still have to play Barrow.

we could draw on tuesday and still have half a chance. btw what a game by clifton. matete, shop and menayese not far behind. coke and hewitt, and macca solid but not quite as good as previously. green - thank feck he scored, coz he was pretty ineffectual otherwise.
waterfall, sorry, but he just seems to cause panic in our defence.
finally Khouri - i just wonder whether there is a left back in the making. doesn't seem to have pace or trickery but in all 3 games he's been very solid defensively and done lots of good blocking, tackling and 'shadowing'

I am hoping Southend win, because it improves our admittedly slim chance of catching Barrow. If Barrow beat Southend they move on to 49 points and with the gulf in goal diff we are effectively relegated. Very important that Southend win that  game. But it wont matter unless we win our remaining games.

Think anything less than 9 points will relegate us unless barrow lose all 3 in which case 7 could be enough , one game at a time just get a win at exeter

If we only get 7 points we have to factor in Southend who are at Barrow next Saturday.

So we could get 7 points and finish above Barrow but find ourselves relegated on goal difference to Southend.

Can't end this match thread on a negative after such a positive performance and result

We are down only if we are in the bottom two after 46 games

Keep the faith.... it might prove to be more misplaced than one of Lenny's goal attempts ( sorry, cheap shot - I actually really do like what he brings to the team ) but it's too soon to throw in the towel

Onwards and hopefully upwards

We are down. In the back of everyone’s mind we know not but I guess it’s nice, albeit a bit late in the day to perhaps give it a go and may be cause some teams above us to sweat.

Personally, from very early on this season I expected us to end up cut adrift but that didn’t happen.

Yesterday was a deserved win and players knew their jobs and stuck to them. Clifton was excellent, I thought waterfall did well, again, not a big fan but he made a couple of good clearances. Mega finish for the winner and a big shout to Hewitt who has barely put a foot wrong since Hurst came in.
