Might we have played in white shirts and red shorts? Certainly remember Ron Cockerill peppering the Pontoon with some rockets in the kickabout. Sadly, he was only a distant hero in the Saturday Telegraph I delivered round Croxton. Dad worked Saturdays and mum only took the bus to Grimsby to buy fabric from Freemo Market or Boyes for her sewing. Seeing Keith and the team on my first visit to a football game is a special memory. RIP.

Keith more or less took over from Allenby Chilton at centre half and was a fixture in that position for several seasons. He was the perfect centre half, good tackler, strong in the air and he led by example so the perfect captain as well later on. In the early 60s he was part of an all-local half back line with Duncan Welbourne and Tony Knights that was an echo of the famous pre-war one. Then he partnered Ron Cockerill and Brian Clifton at times. Keith was Mr Reliable. I seem to think he suffered an injury late in his career and this may eventually have hastened his departure in 1968 when he went on to play and manage at Boston for several seasons in the 70s. “If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.” ― John Stuart Mill, On Liberty."

Keith Yes, Keith was one of a family of three brothers brought up in New Waltham, when it was then still a small village. Like most of us young lads in the post-war years he learnt his trade by kicking a ball ( when we could get one ) around on the local farmer's field dodging around the cow muck which was in plentyful supply. After leaving school he went on to play for the village team before joining Town. A fine sportsman and a pleasant and modest man. My thoughts are with his loved ones. R.I P Keith
