When life seemed so much simpler:

The game kicks off at bang on three
an icy wind a choppy sea
Black n white around the park
floodlights on before it's dark
I crane my neck to see the goal
just as Waters pokes it in the hole
One nil up at half time
Kevin Drinkell's in his prime
A milky tea down the hatch
what a save Nigel Batch!
The goalmouth a muddy mire
heavy legs start to tire
Come on town the old men shout
Bobby Cumming giv' it clout
A smell of fags and stale bitter
bloody 'ell we've missed a sitter
It's nearly time for 'final score'
c'mon town at least one more
The fans sing up to make a din
just as Brolly slides one in
The whistle blows to mark the end
a bus is coming round the bend
it's time to go for me tea
fish n chips n mushy pea

Lovely, tskes you back to being there watching those players.
Can anyone come up with  a modern day version.
Or a comedy version from some of the bad years, for example a Mike Newell era poem.

Maybe line six could do with tweaking a bit but good stuff Mayaman

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Good post apart from this .When youve seen friends die young at only 18 through no fault of their own due to genetic lung problems you hate smoking.Such a sickening thing to do which destroys life .Hence I read even the occasional cigarette elevates chances of lung cancer by 10%.

He is just saying what it was like back then.
I remember being packed in the Barrett Stand as a kid. All you could smell was cigarettes, beer and sweat but the atmosphere and noise was electric.  It was a great time to be a Town fan. There wasn't  a team that liked coming to Blundell Park in those days. The supporters really were the 12th man.

Iam just glad things have improved though and people dont get to breath in second hand smoke no more.As you maybe aware this can be a killer as well.

I am very aware of that fact. I have also lost members of my family through smoking but in those times nobody knew any better, unfortunately.

There once was a manager called Slade
Whose title was a bit of a charade
He lead the Mariners twice
but things didn't turn out nice
Oh what a big mistake was made.
