At any level you need to score when on top and England certainly missed some clear chances. With 25mins left I'd bring Kane on!!

Credit it where it’s due
Lingard came on and equalised almost immediately
Kane puts us in front with a couple of minutes left
Great turnaround 👌

That sums up a very good year for the national team very nicely.
I think we owe Mr. Southgate a lot , just shows how much success a likeable figure can have

Just back to the car. Wasted so many chances but deserved the win over all. Set pieces were dreadful most of the game but when we got one over Kane (who’d been quiet all game) managed to get on the end of it. The Nations League is a good format if only because it means international team fans can get all petty like club fans and sing stuff like “that’s why you’re going down” etc.

WTF does 'likeability' have to do with it ? Roy Hodgson was 'likeable' and so for that matter was Neil Woods and you know what success he had!

Thought that Delph & Rashford were the most likely players to crack the Croatia defence. They disappeared in a double substitution and we score twice. What do I know about football? Mind you, I've only been following it for 50 years, so I guess real understanding takes a bit of time...

My thoughts exactly but thought Stirling had disappeared in the second half

Most free kicks and corners failed to beat the first defender, it amazes me how many professional footballers can't kick a dead ball accurately.

Likeability was absolutely vital in regards to the England post. Prior to Southgate, I heavily doubt that there has ever been such a lack of interest or pride surrounding our national team. This guy has ignited a nation to be interested again. Of course there is an argument that any manager that had any success would have done that. However, I firmly believe what has really captured the nations heart is the team spirit he’s built and the class he has done it with. Could big sam have done that? Obviously we’ll never know but I somewhat doubt it.

Well done England, this Nations league sounded barmy at first but some competitive football rather than "give away cap" friendlies has to be good for everyone especially an emerging England team.
Winning competitive games is great for squad unity as players will want to be part of something. Clearly there is a really good squad culture that Southgate has pulled together, he should be applauded for that if nothing else. We have a lot of young promising talent and he seems to understand how to engage them and remove the fear factor.
Will we ever win something again? Who knows? but it's a nice feeling to look forward to watching England again.

Having watched the U21s the other night, and the U17s are world champions, the best is yet to come. Some really good young players are coming through. Slotting them into an established side that's playing good football and winning games will bring the rewards.
For once there is a real sense of optimism building up that we could again win the World Cup!

i think Southgate is actually getting the support of the fans as he isnt playing the old guard....he is building a side out of young technical players as opposed to the previous 3-4-5 managers who have all bottled dropping the etablished "stars" and gone for name players regardless of whether that meant square pegs or not. Also i think as he has no great managerial success to build on domestically by using the younger players he has known from his England coaching where he did have success he has the respect of those players and therefore they follow his plans...i dont think he could have done that with some of the bigger names of recent times.
The general timing seems to be right.

FFS Russell Slade could have done it if he'd got England to a World Cup semi, we were so desperate for success we'd have fallen in love with Fatty Fry!

Well firstly swin you are a miserable sh8t anyway but as others have said, Southgate has re- energised a generation of England fans. Young and old. What is wrong with someone who is nice being a success. I was at my local today and it was the first time I have seen as many people bothered about an England game outside of a championship for a long time. Possibly that was something to do with the fact that the Nations League is actually competitive, but I honestly believe that is also partly due to the fact that the fans have become re-engaged with the national team, and that is both results (of course) but also the manager, the management team, and the players, buying into a long term vision and a way of doing things. You can be nice and win friends, and sometimes you can be successful and still be nice. Try it, you might like it. UTFM

Just had to Google and read a bug essay on the explan9pf how these group things work... I just thought it was friendlies but out into a group, didn't realise it was an actual tournament! I paid virtually no interest in the England games and kind of wish I did now. A bit. So it's england Portugal France and Switzerland in the semis??!!??!!

Yeh thats the whole point, the friendlies in the past served little purpose in terms of practicing for tournaments and fans werent interested, spain fighting so hard to try and come back when we were 3-0 up showed how the national teams feel about this competition. I love watching england since southgate has been in charge and cant wait for international breaks. Weve got a team with character, togetherness, style, talented youngsters and though we lacked in areas at the world cup, the talent we needed is quickly appearing, im really excited for the next few years for england

I'm enjoying the wins as much as anyone but I'm not going overboard about how much I like Southgate or how nice he is FFS. It's results that get supporters behind clubs / countries not what a lovely man the manager is All this 'likeability' crap raised by the earlier poster is totally irrelevant and means nowt. And yes I'd be happy with Steve Evans or anybody who won matches for that matter, I just wouldn't like him or want to smother him in kisses thats all

Were Crawley odious? Were Grimsby Town nice? Is one game the be all and end all? Half of Town's problems over the years may well stem from being too 'nice', I have posted on here before about preferring a 'win at all costs' approach and a number of holier than thou posters have disagreed

Just out of interest, as Southgate obviously likes and had given youth a chance, if say Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard had all been 28 years old would they have been picked.

All this stuff about young players is not new is it? In 2000 Peter Taylor was given the manager’s job for one game and picked 6 of his under-21 side to play Italy. They actually did well to only lose 1-0 to a good Italian side. Ericsson didn’t continue the youth idea straightaway but he didn’t abandon it, all 6 of Taylor’s picks did eventually become regulars apart from Seth Johnson. The start of the “golden generation”. Southgate is only doing the same thing. Pick youths that he knows and who will follow orders. But to be fair, what’s the alternative?
