Easy one for me this Kevin Donovan that 97 / 98 season some of the best times of my life. Arguably wouldn't have happened without KD.

Donovan.

At the minute, looking like we're heading for the 98 double squad but with Coyne in for Davison.

Very tough call, loved Kevin Donovan but I’m going to go for Alan Pouton. His energetic, box to box, tough tackling yet skilful style was a joy to watch and would get the crowd going with just a step over or a thundering challenge. People have been saying for years that they’d love to see a Pouton type midfielder again, and that just swings it for me.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Pouton.

Donovan was fantastic in that one season and then never really rediscovered that form.  Was The Fishy even around in 1997/98?

The following season I think he scored once and was miles away from repeating his goalscoring in the following seasons.  I can remember not feeling all that bothered that he had left when he did, feeling far more excited that we had signed Stuart Campbell permanently with the intention of him taking over that right wing slot.

Struggled with injuries after promotion I think didn't he, with one long spell out in particular. Kev must have got injured in pre season straight after promotion and missed most of the first season back up. I'm sure I remember first game back in the Championship at home to Ipswich and debutant Stacey Coldicott played right midfield (actually remember him wearing 7 too, so this must have been before squad numbers below the Prem).

After that niggling injuries and probably lost that little bit of a burst over 5 yards that he'd had previously. So never really showed the Championship what he was capable of with us I don't think.

I'll just say Pouton because this is just going to turn into the 97/98 squad + Danny Coyne. Actually how did Coyne get picked? Was it on a technicality because Davison left before the 99/00 season?

What's wrong with that? If the players in that squad were the best in their positions then we should say so shouldn't we?

If are we going to select inferior players in certain positions just because the leading contender has several team mates in the team already, then what really is the point?

We should just pick the best player in each position and see how it goes.

For me an on form Donovan is an obvious pick. At his best he was a real match winner for us.

Donovan was the best winger I've seen for us over that first season. I recall him taking Hearts (I think) to pieces in a pre-season friendly just after he joined and he continued that form until the end of the year.

If Richard Smith can be included when he was often a bit-part player during his time at the club, Donovan should be included as our best No. 7, even if he wasn't the same player after that first season.

Pouton for me. Donovan was great for one season but did the business in a good side. Pouton played in a far poorer side yet managed to get amongst the goals. Pouton encapsulated everything I want from a Town player.

I don’t think this will just be the 97/98 team alone, plenty of interesting options at numbers 8, 9 and 10.

Donno was unplayable that season. 20+ goals from the wing is something very few Grimsby players manage.

Honestly can't believe that no one has gone for Lewis Gobern yet.

He made more of a mark on the team than all the others. (Allegedly).

Pouton had an all action style but a poor 1st touch which often resulted in a 50/50 tackle ( which tbf, he usually won)

But Donovan never managed to score an own goal from the centre circle! Pouton's came from a poor touche followed by a block tackle, as I recall. A touch unfortunate, it must be said.

Pouton for me. Donovan was incredible in 97/98 but I didn't think he really excelled after we got promoted. Pouton was the driving force in our midfield for a few years.

Pouton and Donovan are both players I loved watching, but KD wins this one.

Really difficult one, Kevin Donovan was immense in the 97/98 season, but will go with Pouton for his overall contribution at Championship level.

Donovan
Pouton had an all action style but a poor 1st touch which often resulted in a 50/50 tackle ( which tbf, he usually won)

Quite right and I loved him for it but it did lead to 20 yellows and two red cards during his Town career (according to Wikipedia)!

Donovan was the best number 7 out of those. Pouton was a legend. Or leg end

Coyne got picked because he got the most votes. It’s how this type of thing works. 😉

Was Davison involved in the vote?

What's wrong with that? If the players in that squad were the best in their positions then we should say so shouldn't we?

If are we going to select inferior players in certain positions just because the leading contender has several team mates in the team already, then what really is the point?

We should just pick the best player in each position and see how it goes.

For me an on form Donovan is an obvious pick. At his best he was a real match winner for us.

I never said anything was wrong with it, I feel like people will pick based on nostalgia though even if some players were better at a lower level and not as good at higher ones. Richard Smith was picked despite being a crock during the Fishy era that barely played because of injuries. Granted the competition wasn't amazing  or anything lol but still. Wayne Burnett was picked on virtue of one goal even though he did nothing after it except sit on the treatment table.

I can tell you no. 8 right now. David Smith.

Donno was unplayable that season. 20+ goals from the wing is something very few Grimsby players manage.

I'd wager it'll end up being a more recent no.8 than Smith. Perhaps a ginger haired chap.

This is the most difficult one yet as pouton and Donovan were very different players in different positions wearing the same number 7 . One a CM and the other an out and out winger . Both with everything you’d want as a fan .

Kev Donovan for me but we might have to have a rethink when the cm’s are up for debate .
