I can't remember 😀

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

There's a few I'd like to forget

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

Who's the best player that you forgot played for Town?

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Although I was a big fan of Slade in his first spell, it kinda sums him up when he got Francis in on loan and chucked him on the right wing simply because he was tall.  That meant we could lump it out to him for a knock-on.  Very similar to the much slated Monkhouse tactic of 2015/16.

Francis has since gone onto have a very solid career in the higher levels of the English game as a not too shabby centre-back/right-back.

About 20 years ago while shopping in Bury St Edmunds I got talking to a bloke who had a car on display in the shopping mall,

He asked me where I came from ( my accent must have given me away ) and when I said Grimsby,

He replied I played for Grimsby in the 70's I was a full back,

To my embarrasment I did not remember him when he told me his name,

So if there are any swots out there with his name I would apprecieate it.

I think he said he played about 30/40 times in 2 years.

Had a look at my Mariners' "bible" Pete and these guys mostly filled the left back position in the early 70s

1969-70             Mobley ( 26 games) or Duncliffe ( 26 games)
1970-71             Kirkland (12 games) or Campbell (25 games)
1971-72             Campbell ( 43 games )

Going along with the flow of the thread, I was just suggesting that his time at Town was forgettable.

Anyway, according to wiki he scored 41 goals in 53 appearances for Town.

I noticed that Les i'm pretty sure he only made a small amount of appearances but broke his leg which ended if career with Town.  There was a Brazilian on trial with us but I think he ended up signing for Newcastle can quite remember his name maybe Flamego or something lol.

On a separate note Les saw Ollie Boyd in motordepot today, he aint changed a bit lol.  didn't realise he stopped playing after having 3 ops on his knee.

Who was the third Italian player we had, he was here a few weeks played in the stiffs, Laws made positive noises about signing him then he disappeared (soon to be followed by Gambaro and  Bonetti!). i seem to remember him being a full international too.

Peter 'Diego' Rawcliffe.
Tony Caldwell.

That's the two I was thinking of.
Rawcliffe may have been from Louth.
Caldwell came in a player exchange, then Buckely sold him. Brilliant piece of business as he was crap.
Exchange player was Scott McGarvey, now he was really mad and picked fights with the corner flag. Made Gunning look like a girl private cat.

Ray Lancaster  came with rave reviews but could not hack our fresh air at Cleethorpes,

He came from Rotherham and all the smoke in the pit mining towns effected him when he breathed good fresh air and it made him tired all the time,

Or so they say.

Marlon Broomes, and yes, he scored in extra time.

Edit: Just looked up the match stats and it was Beherall who gave away the penalty that put Liverpool in front.

That young lad that Newell signed on a 3 year deal Jones ?

Scored one goal off his bottom and was released after 12 months.

Chris Jones it was Pete

His solitary effort was the home game v Burton.... who knew that the return fixture, THAT away game,  six months or so later, would be so catastrophic

If my memory serves me right he went to play in the Welsh league.... Neath maybe?

Newell was rumoured to be on a cut for any players he brought through that got sold on. He was one that never made the grade with us, so Newell missed out there..

Watched a short highlights vid of us winning 2-1 against Swindon on Youtube the other day. They had the team lineups on screen inc a player called Stiles on the right wing for us. I thought wow I really dont remember this guy at all, and they referred to him a couple of times in the commentary. Was poor quality video but eventually worked out it was Gary Childs.

Ray Lancaster  came with rave reviews but could not hack our fresh air at Cleethorpes,

He came from Rotherham and all the smoke in the pit mining towns effected him when he breathed good fresh air and it made him tired all the time,

Or so they say.

Ray Lancaster was about as fit a guy as you could get. Long after he'd finished playing for Town he was cycling long distances way before it became popular.

Here's a thought, being where you live, the full back wasn't Steve Govier was it? Used to play for Norwich before coming to BP, so would make sense to move back down that way.

He signed as a centre half, but played majority of his games at left back. Martin Young - a cracking talent cut down in his prime - was the usual centre half when Govier played left back.

In the category of 'one who got away'. Played in the Segunda or whatever it's called and even a few games in La Liga in Spain. Thought he looked quality when I saw him play.

In the category of 'one who got away'. Played in the Segunda or whatever it's called and even a few games in La Liga in Spain. Thought he looked quality when I saw him play.

I remember when he first got into the side, i thought he was class and would make us money one day; then PH released him and when asked why at a fans forum, he wasn't very complimentary about him, saying he was one footed and other stuff that now escapes me. That's when i started to dislike PH.

Think Charlie had the last laugh.

Did we have a very tall African goalkeeper on trial/short contract in the late nineties or early 2000’s? I just seem to remember a back page of the telegraph about him for some reason 🤔

Yep remember that too but its really hard to pick players you forgot played for town when were all firing names that we clearly all know lol.  And some names i have briefly forgotten that others have posted and im thinking oh yeah i do remember him lol.

I remember watching town reserves one evening when it was buckleys first maybe 2nd seasonin charge and we had a black striker called something Morris.

Yes I saw them both play,

Flatts on his debut looked promising but did not kick on,

While watching Nicholls I though what a load of rubbish what did Chelsea see in him enough to sign him.

If I remember correctly the ref moved the free kick 10 yards closer to goal in because our players didn't retreat arguing it shouldn't have been given... double whammy against us then as it made it easier for Carbone to hit the target

Nicholls made a great connection with Kevin Muscat's elbow.

More on One's Isaiah Than the other Rankin.

Rankin scored two goals in his first six games. In a match against his parent club Barnsley at Blundell Park, Rankin scored a goal in a 6–1 victory for Grimsby, but controversially upset Barnsley manager Gudjon Thordarson for what he called an unprofessional goal celebration. Thordarson stated that Rankin would never play for Barnsley again, and the player had his contract terminated with immediate effect, which allowed him to sign for Grimsby on a permanent basis until the end of the season.

Steve Chettle

I was 15 years old when we signed him and having grown up in the era of collecting Merlin Football stickers as a kid he was always in my swap pile. I was delighted when we signed him as he was a proper stalwart at Forest. I think he played about 15-20 games all season, was largely injured and went down.

Paul Warhurst

Again, a Premier League old timer, won the League with Blackburn after that thing at Wednesday when he was a centre half playing up front and scoring. Again a “‘massive” signing for a teenage me despite blissfully ignoring the fact he was old, past it and had played for 2/3 teams already that season.

Clint Marcelle

Played in the Premier League with Barnsley, again I just recall remembering from his Football sticker and being on Fifa 98. Was a completely pointless signing, well past it and lasted 5 minutes.

John Thorrington

I remember seeing this guy tearing it up for Huddersfield on the old ITV Yorkshire Goals on Sunday programme, couldn’t believe our look when we brought him in towards the back end of 03/04. Played like 3 times and ended up in the MLS.

Jason Batty

New Zealand number 1 keeper I reckon either signed non-contract terms or was training with us for a while. Never even saw the bench whatever he was.

Martin Pringle

A huge signing for Town from Premler League Charlton, two games and a career ending injury.

I came across a number of the 'Black and White Corner' fanzines the other day. Done I think by Jake Olley, I don't know how many there were before it went mammaries up but I have four or five of the first seven

Anyway I was amazed how much information there was in them, some great articles and in number 7 a superb lengthy interview with Sir Matt.

It also gives a lot of names for the 'Players you forgot' thread (or in many cases 'Players you didn't forget as you never heard of them')

Here we go (apologies if any have already got a mention)

Liam Nimmo 2 apps as sub
Willie Falconer 2 apps 1 start 1 sub
Neil Murray 2 apps 1 start 1 sub
John Walker 3 apps 1 start 2 sub 1 goal in 6-3 home defeat by Watford
Nicky Rizzo 1 app
Jake Sagere 1 app
Enzo Gambaro 1 app as sub
James Lawson 1 app as sub
Lee Pratt 1 app 17 yo keeper conceded 5 goals v Stoke
Robbie Busscher 1 app as sub signed from Feynoord came on in 89th min, record shortest time on pitch for Town!

Lee Pratt 1 app 17 yo keeper conceded 5 goals v Stoke

I remember that game well. 1986/87 season, last game under Mike L**ns (still can't bring myself to spell his name out). We were already relegated. Lost 5-1. To be fair he didn't really have much chance with any of the goals, it's just that the team we had at the time were so bloody awful. We'd also lost 6-0 at Stoke in the FA Cup earlier that same season.

Jimmy Gilligan, think we offered Watford 100 grand for him on the day they were letting him go for free. They took the money, we got Gilligan and employed  probably one òf the worst players I've ever seen.
