Macclesfield winning and Sutton losing in the National League.

If it stays the same I think that's Macclesfield promoted as Champions to League 2 tonight.

Also means that chesterfield s goal difference is now worse than ours.would love Morecambe to get another couple as it would be the equivalent of us gaining another point on our Derbyshire chums

I'm sure Chesterfield will have a couple of hundred there. How do Morecambe survive on gates like that?

felicitations sake. Would've taken a draw before the game but even so. Fearing a Chesterfield winner now - hopefully Morecambe can do them on the break (I assume Chesterfield will be throwing everyone forward?)

Positive.......it keeps us in within touching distance of Morecambe.

Same but the belief they got from beating Notts County did not last long.

On the other hand though, you'd have thought they'd gain belief from beating Notts so convincingly - and yet they followed it up by losing to a 10 man Vale side that hadn't won for months!

Think a draw is probably a good result for us. Keeps Chesterfield at a distance but also keeps Morecambe unsafe and keeps them looking over their shoulders

It was one of Chesterfields more winnable games so a draw isn't too bad a result. If it had been Morcambe coming back from 2-0 we'd all be cockahoop

Not really. Two games in hand and a better goal diff. Two 1-0 wins would see them overtake us.

Let's hope Exeter don't have an off night next Tuesday.

A win against Barnet is an absolute must.

When I first saw this I couldn’t decide whether the Shaymen had had a meteoric rise or Barca a catastrophic decline.

Not too surprising really. Morecambe are draw specialists, that being their 16th of the season. Yeovil look to have goalscorers, so they are safe i would think.

See what Saturday brings.

Looking at those possession stats, Morecambe look a really poor team so maybe not a terrible result.

This was Chesterfields easiest game in hand and they haven't won - away at Exeter I think their hardest.  Mansfield game is hard to call with it being a local derby and Mansfields form of late has been terrible.

Still see Barnet as a must win - if we can do that and it hauls us above Morecambe it makes that result even better.

Regardless of tonight not a lots changed in reality it’s 2 from the 4 of us, Chesterfield, Barnet and VGR.

This underlines how important last Saturday’s win was. A win this Saturday is vital though.

I expect Chesterfield to get a result versus a declining Mansfield on Saturday but would be very surprised if they beat Wycombe and Exeter. That leaves them VGR and Barnet to play.

But the expression 'meed snookers' means that mathematically the team need others to drop points. Technically speaking we need them to drop points, not the other way round.

But that might leave Chesterfield breathing down our necks again should they beat an out of form Mansfield.

A win on Saturday basically puts Barnet to the sword, and maintains at least a 6 point gap over Chesterfield. It may also allow us to overtake either Port Vale or Morecombe, or both, and means we stay ahead of VGR.

I would say a win on Saturday is a real game changer for us.  Anything less and I would be very concerned.

If we win, we are less reliant on other scores. That's the crux of it and it virtually condemns Barnet, which is one less worry. We can't keep relying on other teams results. What you also have to factor in is other teams in trouble playing against each other. It could be to our advantage if Barnet are still in with a chance in their last game against Chesterfield. Thing is, there are so many scenarios, some results may be blessings in disguise, you just never know. Think 4 points for us may be enough.

What's the least points a team has stayed up in League 2 in recent seasons ?

Bearing in mind we are on 41 at the moment.

When York and Dagenham went down, they both finished with 34 points, so 35 would have been enough. Bristol Rovers went down with 50 though.

Some seasons, we would already have enough points, some seasons nowhere near, hard to tell but i think 45 should do it.

For what it is worth (not a lot), I can confirm me and Mrs Teestogreen witnessed Morecambe and Chesterfield battling it out - boosting the attendance from 1040 to 1042.
Enjoyed the game, and there were players on both sides who caught the eye.
Morecambe - forward Callum Lang (apparently on loan from Wigan) and ? Wylde (on loan from Plymouth apparently) who came on as sub. - particularly tricky and direct winger.
Chesterfield - ? Kellett (he was excellent), another winger who kept on tricking his way past opponents and being tripped, and Christian Dennis - he improved when Chris O'Grady came on at half time to assist.

Both sides seemed to score goals against the run of play  - thus exposing the defence frailties of both teams I thought.

Anyway, Chesterfield have'nt given up, but on reflection only 2 points were dished out rather than 3 tonight, so it is still in Town's hands to survive in Division 2.

As has been said earlier in the thread, Carlisle will fancy their chances at Morecambe on Saturday, with an outside play offs opportunity.

With Chesterfield having to play Barnet and FGR over the coming weeks, I think I'm right in saying that if we won all our remaining games we couldn't possibly finish in the bottom 2. (Someone cleverer than me will know this. And it's very early)

Saturday is a vital win day, with the long run of no wins now having been broken.

As Jolley has stated, a clean sheet is needed as this will make a possible win result easier to achieve.

We all hope that the win will give the team confidence and the home game with brilliant fan support should be the 12th man needed to get a win.

I can't make the game with other prearranged commitments but hope that 6000 others will be there so that the team get the vocal backing needed to inspire the players to give their best.

UTM - ONE MORE WIN ON SATURDAY !!

A win vs Barnet sends them down barring a miracle.

That may also be enough to send Chesterfield down as well.  If not, probably only needs one or two more points. 2 wins and are done.

With Chesterfield having to play Barnet and FGR over the coming weeks, I think I'm right in saying that if we won all our remaining games we couldn't possibly finish in the bottom 2. (Someone cleverer than me will know this. And it's very early)

I've spotted a little flaw in that plan.

If you were Barnet or Chesterfield, you'd obviously want to be where we are.

You'd take points on the board every time. We have to consider that Chesterfield could win both their games in hand but in reality they're a team that's won just 22.5% of their league games this season and they're averaging less than one point a game.

Same goes for Barnet really. A draw should be enough, realistically, to stay above them until the end of the season. They'd have to get 5 more points than us from the final 3 games, so they'd have to hope we lose all 3 (or lose 2 and draw 1) while they'd have to win 2 of their 3. Not impossible but very unlikely.

I agree with Jolley that 41 points won't be enough to stay up. At the end of the day we can't focus too much on what other teams are doing. We just have to look out for ourselves.

Get a win now, because if we don't the pressure and nerves will only intensify.

You could well be right. Other teams playing each other means some of them drop points, which is your 'snookers'.

(I think I get out of that oe on a technicality   )

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

Arsenal doing their best to let a 4-1 home 1st leg lead slip at CSKA Moscow.

2-0 down after  49 mins......Moscow only need 1 more goal without reply to go through.

Danny Welbeck makes it 2-1. Should see Arsenal through.

FT...       Bradford  0-0  Shrewsbury

Shrewsburys hopes of automatic promotion fading fast........looks like it's the lottery of the play-offs after being in the top 2 for so long.

Hurst will be delighted with an away point and a clean sheet. Kept us shape.

What an awful game. Both sides rubbish. Ref dreadful. Tackles brutal. Can't understand why either team played such terrible football.

Arsenal played passively last night, taking a big risk.  However, they were the only team in the last 8 not to lose a tie in the quarter-finals.  They have a good a chance as any team to qualify for the CL by winning the Europa League.

Is there any other manager who's got more experience than Paul Hurst when it comes to play-offs?

He's been in management for 10 years now (joint and solo) and this will be his 7th play-off venture (won 3, lost 3):

Won play-offs with Ilkeston 2008/9
Won play-offs with Boston in 2009/10
Lost play-off semis with Grimsby in 2012/13
Lost play-off semis with Grimsby in 2013/14
Lost play-off final with Grimsby in 2014/15
Won play-offs with Grimsby in 2015/16

Now in play-offs with Shrewsbury for 2017/18 (and he & RS had Boston in play-off positions when they joined us in 2011).

He's consistent if nothing else. I watched the match last night and it was low on quality (although the pitch was awful). They look like a team that's run out of ideas but will still have enough to make a fist of it in the play-offs.

The fact that they're competing against the likes of Blackburn and Wigan given their resources and recent history in the top flight makes it even more remarkable that they're sat on 80+ points. Good luck to them. Enjoy the ride because teams don't punch above their weight for long. They always fall back down.
