For those travelling by train be aware that there is work on the tram system on 15th November so you will need to get a replacement bus from Piccadilly to Cornbrook. You might want to factor the extra time into your journey plans!
And gentlemen in England, now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day

Thanks for this, I've only booked train tickets as far as Piccadilly for now, will probably get the tram to Altrincham after a few hours round Manchester City Centre and a trip to the national football muesum. Also gutted that I didn't realise the England game is on at 5pm and I'm booked on the 6:20 train home
Thanks for that but it shouldn't really effect most people traveling from Grimsby as you change at Stockport, so no real need to go into Manchester, unless you were planning a couple of hours on the urine there first.

That bloody tram. My girlfriend's a Portsmouth supporter and a couple of weeks ago we went to see them playing in Bury. We arrived in Manchester by train at 1pm expecting this would leave us with plenty of time to reach Bury by tram. On arriving at the tram stop on Market Street, we were informed the tram to Bury wasn't running that day due to engineering works, and a replacement bus was in operation. The bus took such a stupid meandering route we missed the first 10 minutes of the game! Based on that experience, my advice would be change trains in Stockport - don't rely on Metrolink replacement buses as they are slow and terrible and will cause you to miss kick-off.
You can get the train from Piccadilly anyway. Takes less than half an hour.

Yes there's a train from Piccadilly via Stockport. Also the 41 bus sometimes goes as far as Alty although generally terminates at Sale
The Northern Rail service to Chester at 17 minutes past the hour from Piccadilly stops at Altrincham.
