For those travelling by train be aware that there is work on the tram system on 15th November so you will need to get a replacement bus from Piccadilly to Cornbrook. You might want to factor the extra time into your journey plans!

Thanks for this, I've only booked train tickets as far as Piccadilly for now, will probably get the tram to Altrincham after a few hours round Manchester City Centre and a trip to the national football muesum. Also gutted that I didn't realise the England game is on at 5pm and I'm booked on the 6:20 train home

Thanks for that but it shouldn't really effect most people traveling from Grimsby as you change at Stockport, so no real need to go into Manchester, unless you were planning a couple of hours on the urine there first.

That bloody tram. My girlfriend's a Portsmouth supporter and a couple of weeks ago we went to see them playing in Bury. We arrived in Manchester by train at 1pm expecting this would leave us with plenty of time to reach Bury by tram. On arriving at the tram stop on Market Street, we were informed the tram to Bury wasn't running that day due to engineering works, and a replacement bus was in operation. The bus took such a stupid meandering route we missed the first 10 minutes of the game! Based on that experience, my advice would be change trains in Stockport - don't rely on Metrolink replacement buses as they are slow and terrible and will cause you to miss kick-off.

You can get the train from Piccadilly anyway. Takes less than half an hour.

Yes there's a train from Piccadilly via Stockport. Also the 41 bus sometimes goes as far as Alty although generally terminates at Sale

The Northern Rail service to Chester at 17 minutes past the hour from Piccadilly stops at Altrincham.

I know, I got that on the way to the Wrexham game a few weeks ago because of strikes by Arriva staff

The majority of fans going on the day will change at Stockport though I would have thought but if anyone was going into Manchester for a few pre-match beers they could catch that train to Alty so hopefully the tram issues shouldn't really affect anyone.

Or...... alternatively wake up and realise you dont live in Victorian England and you can take your horseless carriage direct to the ground. Trains and trams FFS.

That's our plan, getting to Manchester early for a look round the National Football Museum, then go for a few Mulled Wines round the Christmas market, onto the Brewdog for a few cheekys and catch the 2:17 to Alty

You can't beat an away day on the train with your mates though, in my opinion. You can have a beer or seven, no one has to worry about drink-driving and there's a loo with a few yards when you need to go (several times usually after a skinful of beer)

I just prefer to be in control.

I'd don't really think I'd like to have been in control for some of the games I've seen in the past.

To each their own, I love the train journeys, noone has to stay sober, it´s all part of the day for me! Beers on the train, rolling straight into the town centre and finding decent boozers, not having to worry about parking etc.... all that, and the fact that I don´t have a car.
