Has just been awarded manager of the month. Amazing how much can change in a short space of time in football. It was only our last home league game were he was getting booed off for our draw with Altringham.

I think Paul Hurst would be a brilliant manager if he knew how to win home games against Altrincham and Dartford alike. We've already beaten Torquay, Kiddy, Wrexham and Gateshead and not lost at Bristol Rovers or Halifax. But lost at home Southport and drawn against Altrincham, Dover and Nuneaton. There's a theme emerging.

Well done to PH. Who'd have thought you could win motm when that month contained a draw at home to Altrincham?

Can't be hypocritical. No celebration from me yet. I've seen too many false dawns and this one is only on Halloween.

I'll be more than happy to celebrate PH being named manager of the season when the job's done with the club being back in the league where it belongs next April.

Just personally (and guess some may disagree !), I don't see why anyone should really feel hypocritical (or get defensive) at all.

Fans views as to any managers worth/ability etc is surely never gonna stay exactly the same ALL the time.
So there's different opinions at different times - that's football for you...
In the unlikely event Hurst loses the next 10 games I'll be calling for him to go too !

I just hope it's not another mega backlash if we don't win tomorrow.
If the bookies are to be believed guess we should win.
But even if we don't, it's hardly all over...

Maybe we've just got to accept we're playing "catchup" this season after early season injury nightmares and limited luck/missed opportunities ?
Failure to win is always frustrating but cursing the league table if we can't manage to win every game equally seems a bit pointless.

Perhaps these "false dawns" are just part and parcel "dips" of every supporters rather LONG football journey - look at Luton !

Despite the frustrations and rather loud protests in previous weeks, I really struggle to believe ANY Town supporter (including yourself moosey ! ) really has (or even had !) ZERO confidence in Hurst whatsoever ?!

All the talk of Hurst not being able to set up a team at home to beat lower teams is a load of tosh IMO . The problem he has his trying to keep the moaning McMenemy , Buckley , Match of the Day watching fans happy . He knows that 433 is the best formation and he now has the players that suit this formation . Just one problem it aint that pretty to watch . Thats why we grind out results away and no one moans .

Fair play, well done Paul Hurst and the team. But we don't have time to rest on our laurels, let's crack on and win this league.

A sobering thought is if we were to win the next TEN league games and we've never done that, since I've been alive at least. The reality is that we are 12 points behind, Barnet are averaging OVER 2 points per game so if we were to win ten on the bounce, and Barnet continue say JUST 2 points per game we would still be two points behind them! But Barnet are due a bad run, let's hope we've had ours!

i think it was obvious why we was calling for his head at the time, but he has proved what he and this team can do, so i don't think we was wrong to call for his head, but it shows Fenty got it right in standing by .

anyway, no negativity, well done Paul, well deserved

I still don't think Fenty got it right in sticking by him, he hasn't got one decision right in his 10 year reign.  Hurst can't get the team to beat part-time teams and until he does that, I'll hold back on saying well done Paul. But, I am pleased for now the team is in form!

Can everyone stop this ridiculous debate about Paul Hurst.
One week he is the worst manager ever.
The next the best manager ever.
What this team needs and the manager needs is our support whether winning, drawing or losing.
A good crowd behind a team breeds confidence and results.
A fickle crowd breeds failure and poor performance.

There is no debate. Either Hurst gets us promoted, in which case he is a good manager, or he doesn't. In which case he isn't.

A crowd has nothing to do with confidence or results. If it did we would have been back in the league years ago because the BP fans have given a lot more to the team than they have had in return. On the field is what counts, nothing else.  Good play and results will always bring a good crowd to BP. That's the way it works.

We might be getting towards this but there's a very long way to go yet.

Just goes to show the people who lacked faith in him and now suddenly think he's a god...... I got messages telling me i'm crazy to still support him, well up yours people lol. I've said from the beginning that even great managers have bad patches and they also have purple patches. What makes a good manager is when they stick to their tactics and prove people wrong without quitting. I am a big believer in supporting a manager for the long term, even if things aren't always going to plan. We have changed managers way too often over the year's, and how has that worked out for us? Relegation, relegation and more relegation. Paul is a Young/new manager, give him time to perfect his logic and idea's, I have no doubt he has very good potential to go far in Football

No. Debate about the manager is good. Its what football fans do, its in the DNA.

Who is to know that the recent debates about the manager haven't inspired the team to do well for him?

We debate what we see - why on earth would you think we wouldn't comment/debate on the most important person in the club?

The way it works is that the manager signs and sorts the tactics out and we debate it. Good winning run calms down debate. Bad losing run escalates debate.

Football is fickle because winning is everything in the professional game and I am sure no one knows that better than Paul Hurst and indeed every other manager.

I've chosen which side of the fence I'm on and I'm sticking to it. It takes quite a bit for me to call for our managers head, and drawing and losing against part time teams at home earlier this season eventually I saw my backside with it. Good results against top half of the table mean naff all when we where seemingly unable to break down teams who come here to defend and are after a point. I cannot after decided I was aganist Hurst, just suddenly after a month just flip flop back again, it will take me a while to be for him again. I really really shouldn't say this considering my dedication to superstions, but if we put our voodoo away at Braintree and go 2nd(shhhh!!!) and have another excellent month I should be able I was wrong to want Hursts head and change my mind!

A crowd has nothing to do with confidence or results.

A good crowd helps you beat Spurs 1-0 and push Huddersfield all the way at home, there's no doubt about it !

the BP fans have given a lot more to the team than they have had in return.

Well perhaps you're right but at what point does this chip on your shoulder from days gone by finally fall off ?
Will you be back in attendance if we get back into the Football League ?
If not, don't you think it's a bit rich to assume your voice should be listened to ?

Perhaps you should listen to what Scott Neilson says about looking forward. (see officialGtfc channel - ontheCouch).

Oh it does make me laugh...
You'd think those who always complain the most are the ONLY ones who have ever suffered any dissatisfaction or pain in the past 10 years.

Quite ironic some are giving 0 at the moment to help achieve what THEY apparently want for the future !

He who complains loudest cares the most ?
I don't think so !

If you want to help the team achieve it's ambitions, I kindly suggest you quit complaining for the sake of us "BP fans" and get your @rse and enthusiasm down there for the FACup game on Saturday.

Have you seen their home form Vicar ?

http://www.braintreetownfc.org.uk/results.html

Beaten Dover, Bristol Rovers (4th), Kiddy(9th)
Drawn with Barnet, Halifax and today Woking(5th)
Before that lost to Southport (ironic !)
Not sure what to read into their recent FACup 5-3 win v Weymouth...

I see your point of course, champions should win at Braintree.
And at a guess, think we will too.
Just there's no guarantees in any game of football, let alone in this league.

Have you seen their home form Vicar ?

http://www.braintreetownfc.org.uk/results.html

Beaten Dover, Bristol Rovers (4th), Kiddy(9th)
Drawn with Barnet, Halifax and today Woking(5th)
Before that lost to Southport (ironic !)
Not sure what to read into their recent FACup 5-3 win v Weymouth...

If we are serious, we win at Braintree, it isn't AC Milan, it's Braintree. Simple as that.

It's about time I agree !
No doubt momentum is important.

For me a draw wouldn't be disaster but doubt anyone (including Hurst) would take a point if they were offered it now.

Personally I think we will have too much for Braintree however we need to ENSURE we actually turn up and want to win after all we owe them one and our record their is somewhat crap.

If we win Tuesday we will be sitting 2nd in the league - hopefully this is a great incentive for the players to go there and beat them.

i think it was obvious why we was calling for his head at the time, but he has proved what he and this team can do, so i don't think we was wrong to call for his head, but it shows Fenty got it right in standing by .

anyway, no negativity, well done Paul, well deserved

So you were wrong but actually you were right?

After a few bad results hysterically bleating for the manager to be sacked is not the right thing to do.

Completely agree with the Vicar on both the stats and winning at Braintree. If we are to be contenders we must win an incredible percentage of our remaining games - if Barnet keep racking up the points* at the present rate they'll finish on around 102 points. To equal that we'd need another 72 points from 28 games or an average of 2.6 points a game. * we can't afford to assume that they won't or that we will take 4 or 6 points off them

Braintree were rubbish when we played them in April and judging by results they aren't any better now. Fail to win and, not only will Woking be on the same points and have 2 games in hand, we won't be demonstrating the sort of quality needed by champions.

Who said that?

All the talk of Hurst not being able to set up a team at home to beat lower teams is a load of tosh IMO .

Well for me, it's not the issue at all  !
It's more teams who come to defend en masse round their own box and just personally, wouldn't be placing Dartford into that category.
Not least because (ironically) we got the early goal...

Our 1st goal was a (lucky) own goal from a set piece corner.
So we didn't have to work the ball through, around (or into if we had a tall striker) a packed defence.
My concern over breaking packed and stubborn defences (to find the first goal) in open play remains.
The good news is it may prove easier to overcome in the future with a full squad, improved confidence, work on the training ground and better understanding between players.

If you ask me, even the great John Tondeur asked a somewhat irrelevant question post match...
"Earlier in the season side struggled against sides near the bottom here at Blundell Park to break them down but never really seemed in doubt today ?"

[I agree we were generally comfortable after the 1st went in (in JT's defence what else could he have asked ?!)]

Hurst's response:
"It didn't but having said that I don't think the game in truth was that dissimilar to some of the others, it's just about the ball going in the net"

appears (at least to me) to be:
a) a simple acknowledgement that leading the game (thus opening it up more) always means the opposition aren't ever gonna defend in numbers when they're behind.
b) hinting at the fact that we've created chances but players have ultimately missed them in some of those other games.

Now b) is fair enough and certainly tells part of the story.
But comments like "all fizz no bang" (just back) and "We can't find a way through" on MP v Altrincham tells it's own story too.

Southport was an interesting one because they DID pack the defence but also hit us on the attack.
In my opinion we couldn't "unlock" or break Altrincham or Southport down.
There was a general fan feeling Chester (hardly a big player in this league) "came to play" so there was no issue in that victory before the Southport game.

Attacking or defensive, all opposition teams defend their own goal.
But there's defend and there's "5 at the back" and "stick everyone behind the ball".

Near the bottom or not, not everyone who comes to BP tries to frustrate for long periods...
What would have happened (and whether Dartford would have got progressively more defensive or tried to "shut up shop") had we not got the early goal is speculation. I guess we would have won but ultimately we don't know for sure.

Put it this way, I'll be suprised if those (including myself) who were thinking e.g. "0-0 or 4-0" for the Dartford game aren't also gonna be wondering about our creative guile WHEN FACED WITH A BRICK WALL DEFENCE  at some point in the future.

There were certainly genuine early season excuses (injuries, players missing good chances).
But at the end of the day with promotion at stake, I've no desire to kid myself that overcoming packed and stubborn defences isn't a tough challenge (that will still need to be overcome during the season).

Tbf to any manager in any game, isn't it always tough ?!

One thing is for sure a Draw at Braintree isnt a disaster  and  our "new" system should make that happen at the very least . It is going to be a rough bumpy ride with not too much Flair but we will achieve promotion this season with the players we have now got playing the system that suits Hurst and the players !! IMO  433 , 41311 ,4 1 2 2 1,  or what ever it is ........lol

Agree about a draw not being a disaster but wouldn't be over confident about the flair bit.
We've already seen what can happen...

I don't think Dartford parked the bus at all. They were reasonably adventurous - and maybe that's been their downfall. We got lucky with the first goal, and according to Tony Butcher in the CA match report lucky to get a pen (I couldn't see so clearly from the far end of the main stand  but it looked like a push).

It was a foul for the penalty. Very soft - but a foul all the same.

Clearly the defender pulled him back by the shirt. Lucky? Not in my eyes, a clear foul

He was booked too, so the ref, who I thought had a decent game, must have seen something significant and did not hesitate.

They didn't have time to park the bus because we scored early. Generally in our home games against the lesser teams if we have scored early we have won comfortably.

Good point lets hope it becomes the norm, I can remember years ago 70`s etc when not to be a goal up in the first twenty minutes seemed incredible whoever we were playing, not to say we always won mind
