A new striker that is.

Come on Paul and John, a third of the season gone already and still no news on someone who can fire us up this league. Considering our defensive capabilities, an attacking player or two would go a long way to rounding off a promising squad.

Or is he just waiting for Pittman and Arnold to get fit?

All getting quite frustrating. I know it's been stated in the paper that it's not a budget issue but I'm not sure I'm buying that personally. Oates will be on peanuts if we're paying any wages at all. Hurst has never had any issues bringing in players before, so why are we having so many problems signing a striker? In my opinion the budget isn't there for a suitable striker.

If he is waiting for Pitman and Arnold to get fit , We then have been conned , Pitman will never be fit for long , he is to injury prone, and there is some doubt that  Arnold wants to be here , [ taken from what people have mentioned on here ]. There must be a decent striker out there that is not getting a game , so why have we not found him ????

Arnold is loving it here,

He has got 3 months pay for less than half an hours work.

I don't think the budget is the issue. PH has said that he won't sign anybody just to fill a place and he is looking for a striker who fits the bil,l as he sees it. This is surely the right approach. AB only used to bring in players who he thought would suit his style of playing. There might be loads of strikers out there but surely we want somebody better than what we have and able to add something to the squad.

I'm sure the money is there but after our bad record of bringing players in during the season over the last 2 years , PH has to get this one right because i suspect that until we have a good cup run there wont be any more money  ( Falling gates are not helping the Budget ).

With Hurst's track record on strikers, there is no wonder no one wants to come here.  He signs them, plays them in one game, then they are put in either 3rd or 4th choice behind his favorites.  Would you come to work with someone with that record?

I think money might be a factor. According to Hurst he is trying for L2 strikers and the only ones he will be after are those not in the first team. They would rather bench warm where they are than bench warm here because they will know that's all they'll do. In any case they will probably be no fitter that Oates and will spend most of the time either injured or getting match fit just in time to go back to their club.

To actually improve the side he needs to be signing somebody who is scoring and playing regular football as a first teamer from L2, Conference or just below. He completely failed to do that in the summer and now has to wait for the next window. It will cost money. Probably more than he or JF wants to pay, but beggars can't be choosers.

In the meantime he is short of numbers. Really, anyone who can run and put themselves about would do but like I say anyone decent just doesn't want to come. There is no short term answer to the scoring shortage from a loanee.

Plenty of strikers of our level out there  1) We won`t pay
                                                         2) They are not interested
                                                         3) We have not enquired

Take your pick

In my opinion the budget isn't there for a suitable striker.

I wondered that.
Maybe the money is there but it's harder to find and get those better ones in.

I'd love to see the better ones come here.
Although not convinced the striker issue is the 1 crucial missing piece of the jigsaw it's made out to be.
If you're struggling to "unlock" or create the chances like v Southport (not easy chances for Lennie IMO), generally it's a "team" thing.

Left wing concerns me - is this Neilson's ? Or do we move him central in a new formation ? Play him wide in a 4-3-3 ?
Perhaps it will partly depend on others left wing performances tonight but maybe the squad would benefit from another winger in a 4-4-2.
A good left one who could also cover left back would be ideal IMO.

That rather puts a different take on the line that "I'm not going to get anyone that isn't an improvement on what we have". I can't imagine there are that many good strikers for our level that we could afford.

Surely the money we've saved by not having this striker, and not spending that part of the budget, for 4 months means we could afford to spend a little more now?

Well at least we are trying! I think it will be the next window before we do anything so it's all about staying in touch with top 5 before January. Hopefully we just play away until then as we seem to play better

What concerns me is when Hannah / Neilson have a bad game they are dropped .............................its a bit like when i was at school if you were a striker and you didnt score after a couple of games you were dropped !!... Hannah IMO needs a run of at least 15 games to sharpen up. As shown in the past he knows where the goal is .............Hannah IMO is the Answer . LJL is the question

I made this point a while back. We must be saving anywhere between £700 and £1000 a week in wages. There also must be money available to pay a fee for a player, because they said that wasn't the issue with Bogle. My bet is he's waiting till January to get someone good in and spend a few quid, will it be too late by then?

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Difficult to say without sounding negative,Hannah scored two well taken goals and Oates tried his heart out but failed to impress (me anyway) Center half had him in  his pocket regarding winning high balls,  what can you expect from a youth player who has not had much first team experience, sorry

LJL is one of our strongest assets. I agree with what some say that our game plan tends to be too rigid when he is on the pitch, and for me this is what needs to change, not the selection of LJL. We miss him when he's not playing. Yes he's not a natural goal scorer. But his holding-up, beating men, strength, lay-offs and general battling are fantastic.

Really ? Strength and battling i will concede ,beating men and layoffs , REALLY ? Generally his control and touch are woeful his second touch is usually a desperate lunge to attempt to rectify his first .
