Nothing for sheep (shaggers) Shearers then.

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play.
It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfullness,
disregard of all rules and a sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence;
In other words it is war without the shooting.

A few years ago I looked at the website for emigration to New Zealand and they had a list of desired skills required for any applicants. Aside from the usual medical and construction positions it appears NZ is desperate for hairdressers.

Now, no disrepect to hairdressers - my mum was one for 25 years - but I find it hard to envisage that there is a nationwide shortage of hairdressers in New Zealand. Is the hair of Aucklanders so long that it touches the ground?

So it appears that if you wish to emigrate get yourself down to the college and enlist as a hairdresser.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

I think you'll find when you get to New Zealand ready to cut their hair, they will laugh at you and hand you a pair of shears and point you in the direction of the nearest field.

If you are prepared to live in a desert or FIFO and have any qualifications that would help get you into mining, that is the way to go - the money is massive and there is, apparently, a real skills shortage.

Before applying for work in regional Australia, ie Roma & Toowoomba, take a critical look into where those jobs are. This might be an obvious thing to say, but Australia is a massive country and our remote areas are VERY remote (I live about 1600 miles from my state capital and 200 miles from the next substantial town/city) and can be pretty basic in terms of infrastructure and things to do. Plus, the Roma/Toowoomba area are rather prone to natural disaster.

The subject of the cost of living here is relevant to the global economic situation. Australia is more expensive to live in than it was, but the figures re: the UK are skewed by a very strong AUS$ and a weak GBP. Plus, the cost of housing appears expensive when compared to an area like Grimsby, but not when compared to many other parts of the UK. As an example, I recently saw an advertisement for new built homes close to Brisbane for GBP200,000 which might buy a lot in Grimsby wouldn't in necessarily in a big UK city.

I have been here for 9 years and lived in NZ for 8 years before that. I have seen the costs increase but they are in line with wages generally. Always exceptions to the rule. The jobs being discussed are most likely mining related in the regional areas so they do carry more salary $130kAUD for diesel mechanic for example. But the cost of rent or houses in those areas goes up too.

Coral trout is as good as haddock!

Its hard enough remembering my opinions without remembering my reasons for them!

Cost of Living usually pans out IE, in Uk we are paying £1.40  a litre for petro, What is it in Oz - $1.50ish?

In Islington N. London, you will pay close to £300k for a studio flat. That will buy a lot more in Brisbane, even more in Cairns, and half a street in Burnley or Hartlepool.

Mining always starts the boom in Oz, and FIFO jobs always pay a premium.

Does Toowoomba have any worse natural disasters than Newcastle (NSW) or Darwin had?

It can also get pretty manky wether wise her - massive floods in UK at any time of the year. At least in Cairns you know it will only pour with rain between Xmas and Easter

I lived in both Cairns and brisbane, and the lifestyle in the far north is by far the best.

Don't know. I know the IGA, can't picture a chip shop though. Will have to take a look. When we have fish & chips we usually go to the chippy in Yorkey's and sit on the beach to each them (cue sitting on Yorkey's Knob joke).

Many Brits still consider Australia as the most likely place they would like to move to. Australia (unlike the UK) have tightened up their already stringent visa eligibility rules, so that they only get migrants who want to work and integrate into Australian society.

The recent mining boom has placed a huge shortfall in skilled staff in this area, and whilst the bush is a hard place to live, it is extremely rewarding if you are prepared to go there for a couple of years.

You can obtain a FREE Visa Assessment test online - http://bestjobsinoz.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/free-online-visa-assessments.html

and find listed genuine vacancies from Australian companies.

The Visa Assessment is non commital - but at least you will get an idea if you are eligble or not. Mechanical and Engineering skills are in great demand.
