Can anyone recommend one of their albums to buy? I never really given them a proper listen and I don't know which album it was that helped them break through and I'd like to listen to the most highly rated one.

You may as well just buy one of the greatist hits compilations for the same price and have nearly all of them in one.
I however do like "The Smiths" itself as an album as it has a rawer sound.

If its an introduction you want then get the singles collection, if you want to go for an album then my personal favorite is the queen is dead.

I love all of The Smiths stuff but I'd go with "The Queen Is Dead", great album and possibly their finest hour (although "Strangeways Here We Come" was their only No. 1 album). But like Moosey said it might be worth buying a greatest hits. If you were to do that, I'd go with either of these:

The queen is dead for me but they are all good. In an Alan partridge way though surely the album for you is some sort of 'best of the smiths'.

Cheers for all the suggestions. I don't want to buy a 'best of' jobby. That's not especially music a I like it - I appreciate the concept of an album. I've given The Queen is Dead a whirl, I'm not blown away so... Strangeways Here Come.
