The most pleasure I get from doing anything outside of family life and watching live football is cooking. Nothing I like more than slaving over a hot stove for 3 or 4 hours producing something culinary. Rarely use recipes, but enjoy combining foods - not the modern fusion hype - to make something new, such as parboiled cauliflower florets with wholenut peanut butter spread between the floret and the stalk, then dipped in tempura batter and deep fired. For visual effect I might put a tadge of turmeric in with the batter to make it golden yellow when cooked.

I love cooking with fish, and as a previous post noted, whenever I'm down in Grimsby at all I always head north with a car full of the stuff because the fish up here is poor quality indeed. Fish pie this evening, with hake, smoked haddock, king prawn and green lip mussels in a white sauce with a mashed potato topping. One of my favourites!

Anyone else have similar, or indeed, different ways of filling their spare time?

Swimming. It keeps me fit, its enjoyable, its great exercise but not a complete beasting on the body, it wakes you up in the morning and you feel a sense of well being throughout the day and also youll certainly sleep better at night.

Movies, i love getting lost in a decent film, signed up to sky movies, lovefilm and am constantly scanning IMDB for decent up and coming hit films.

However i'd still rather watch live football

Cooking, getting into Indian cooking at the minute.

Langauges - speak reasonable Spanish, a little French and Italian, as well as a very little Norwegian.

I've had a few short stories published, can play classical piano to a reasonable standard and make a lot of electronic music with synths etc.
Also can speak German though not quite fluently.

Would love to be able to cook well my diet is appalling.

Was a very good darts player at one time, and once played on stage in front of about 1500-2000 people in a champion of champions final at Cayton Bay (Scarborough). The crowd  didnt actually come to see us though, we were still on stage playing and held up the evening entertainment............. happy days.

I thinks its  more of a  technical game than say the likes of football. With tennis if you want to get anywhere you need a lot of coaching preferably private (I had 2 lessons which I paid out of my own pocket but thats it) which costs a fair bit of money unlike football where you can shine almost straight away. Reason why the sport is littered with so many of the middle and upper classes

What gets me is how the pros manage to hit their serves so hard. I serve over-arm and whack it with everything I've got but it just plops at 3mph onto the other side   It's not as though a lot of them are really that well built, just donno how they do it.

Well, the *knitting* is finished.  I've put it away for six months, then I'll take another look at it (with fresh eyes) and see if I'm brave enough to take it further.  Don't think it's good enough, really.  But it's certainly not been a waste of time - I never thought I'd get it finished, done loads of research and learnt a lot and it's helped to take my mind off work, which has been crucial for my state of mind - would probably have gone mad without it...saw half of my colleagues lose their jobs, which was incredibly stressful.

The bad news is - I've got itchy fingers to start another one now.

Wow, just finishing it is one heck of an acheivement in itself! I've got about 20 *half jumpers* stashed in my drawer   Some are just sleeves!
Think you will be surprised in 6 months Marinette, dunno how much experience you have but it's really astounding how differently you'll see it after you've forgotten most of it. I think you'll get some pleasant surprises.

Why not start another one? If it's been that helpful to you, do it!

Thanks for the advice.  Problem with starting another one is that I tend to be a bit 'away with the fairies' - but I'll give it a go.

I once farted the intro of Shirley Bassey's "Hey Big Spender" without autographing my gusset after a particularly heavy day/night on the sauce.

That's pure class....but you'd obviously not had a daal accompanying the night on the sauce or the autograph would have been mandatory

On the contrary. If I had partaken in a daal, this may have given me the ability to progress onto the verse and possibly the first chorus.

I once farted the intro of Shirley Bassey's "Hey Big Spender" without autographing my gusset after a particularly heavy day/night on the sauce.

Yeah, i love it. Its definatly the way forward to teach youngsters - as you say the brazilians play futsal from a young age as do alot of countries (Spain,Holland) and this is the main reason i'd say that forgein players are usually much technically better than our home grown players
Am still at school now and to be honest theres nothing about futsal schools related, but have been looking at the futsal qualification GTFC offer (I will play for Grimsby in one way or another!  )

That genuinely made me laugh out loud (or lol, as the kids would say).

Going on WII fitness tanked up on vodka and redbull on a friday night, with a forkfull of chicken tikka vindaloo poised to completely miss my mouth and then to achieve an age of 20. On the flip side of the coin i then go on it again with my kids a few days later, completely sober and achieve an age of 75!
