Alec Hall, Harry Betmead and Teddy Buck were probably the finest players ever to play for Grimsby Town. They formed a half back line that was the core of the team that played in the First Division in the 1930's and they reformed after WW2 but were unable to reproduce the form that had kept Town at the highest level for over 10 years. They were famous stars of their time - not just in Grimsby but throughout the game.
I am currently selling a sheet of autographed notebook paper signed by them and many others from that first division side of c1947 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Grim.....;hash=item5ae848ff09
I also have for sale one of the largest collections of 1930-50s Grimsby Town memorabilia on the internet - Town's 1939 semi-final programme and the programme from the previous round, signed by Fred Crack the goalscorer who put Town through to the semi-final, lots of autographed programmes, photos etc including George Tweedy, Jackie Bestall, Pat Glover etc etc - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/A1boo.....m14.l1513&_pgn=3
Take a look - it's interesting just to browse through so mush Town history. They are not cheap - but many of them are unique and difficult to find anywhere else..

I'm not doubting they were great players but considering they were from a bygone age when they probably smoked 20 woodbines a day and players they played against did the same , their diets were fish n chips etc etc they prob would struggle in the modern day game . To say they were prob the best ever players to play for town is debatable .
Don't know where I'm going with this argument but probably a good bit of history .
Bye

I would love to have that 1939 semi-final programme.  A moment of great history for the club.  We were right at the top in those days.  Surprised that the Club has never purchased a copy in the past to put on display.

Further to Hall, Betmead and Buck comments above.  I heard a few years ago that the great Herbert Chapman, manager of the outstanding Arsenal team in of the 1930s, bid £100K for all 3 Grimsby Half-backs.   No idea if it is true, even the possibility is a great compliment to the Town team in the 30s.

I noticed that one signature was ' R Ferrier '

This must have been Ron Ferrier who, when I was was at junior school and having trials for
the team to represent Grimsby primary schools, was in charge of selection

This would be in 1949 by which time he was teaching at , I think, either Bursar or Reynold
Street school. He was a terrific bloke.

I wondered if any of the (very) old posters on here remember him and came across him in
later years.

I met Ted Buck when I had some lads working at his house,

We spent a nice afternoon talking about the olden days,

When players like ginger Hall worked on a building site on saturday morning, popped into the imp
for a quick pint then played top class football in the afternoon,

How times have changed,

I found Ted to be real nice guy.

My Grandad used to manage Teddy Hall in his job after football.

He fell out with GTFC after retiring from the game and never set foot inside BP again. He also regularly used to attend work in his former match shirts, including according to my Grandad one of the semi-final shirts.
