So with Woy Hodgson naming his squad for the Euros on Wednesday, he has already said he'll take Rooney.
Who will the other 3 be?  Who would you take?

Bent, Sturridge, Crouch, Welbeck, Carroll, Defoe, Holt, Hearn    ???

Rooney, Crouch, Welbeck, Holt.

Lets go nuts, have Holt to smash through, Crouch to knock down, maybe swap Bent for Welbeck depending on his fitness as hes probably the best finisher we have in terms of instinct.

Hmm, who has it in them to be good themself, but also make up for superstar Rooney's usual tourament anonimity?

I'd definitely take Defoe and Bent, maybe Crouch and Sturridge as well.

My hard earned would be on Rooney, Welbeck, Carroll and Defoe. Maybe a fifth too? Crouch or Sturridge perhaps? I'd be very surprised if it's Holt though although that'd be ace.

Not Bent been really off form for him
Strurridge hmmm mybe looks like he has a future fighting for that spot
Crouch no just becasue he plays for stoke
Carroll has hit some sort of form recently but not had a good enough season
Holt not good enough though saying that he is there at the right time when you want him to be
Defoe hmmmmmm i like defoe and i like to see him playing for England so i would take him but thats just personal choice
Hearn hmmmm as good as he is i don't want to risk him getting injured on a pintless tournament

Who else is there to consider? Struggling to think of top flight English Strikers

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

I once said Gazza's IQ was less than his shirt number and he asked me: What's an IQ? - George Best

Kinda hard for Bent to be in-form when he has a long term injury, and is playing in a horrible defence minded Alex Mcleish team.

If Messi had McLeish as manager he'd struggle to hit double figures.

Carrol above Defoe for me.

Holt deserves a chance imo.

Crouch is a very good player and a hard worker.

We have 3 real old style strikers and who can head. Add Rooneys skill and vision could make our strikers a threat.

May not work but I have hope

Yeah, I'd like to see him given a go. No chance of his chance being a place in a tournament squad though.

He would be a dangerous unknown striker to many teams. I like the way he would run through brick walls to get a goal

Rooney
Carroll
Wellbeck
Sturridge

Gives us different options. Sturridge can run with the ball at speed. Carroll on his day is a great targetman and threat from set pieces. Rooney likes to drop deep. And Wellbeck has played well this season.

I know its a strikers thread but was bored so thought I would go the whole hog!

GK: Hart, Green Carson
Def: Johnson, Richards, Baines, Cole, Jones, Ferdinand, Cahill (if fit), Lescott
Mid: Barry, Parker (again if fit), Carrick, Lampard, Young, Johnson, Milner, Walcott
Fwd: Carroll, Bent (see Parker and Cahill), Wellbeck, Crouch. Obviously Rooney will go mind so from that bunch I would drop Bent.

Would then play a 451 of Johnson, Ferdinand, Lescott and Cole at the back. Barry and Parker shielding. Walcott, Young and Adam Johnson off the front man - Carroll. You can then bring Rooney to play behind a striker after the first 2.

The problem with Crouch is that at the highest international level (and there are no mugs in the Euro finals), either the defenders are clever enough to win free-kicks against him because he looks so awkward or the referees penalise him all the time for looking so awkward. He tends to drape his arms around the shorter defenders when challenging for headers.

His record against the slightly weaker teams is decent because their defenders aren't quite clever enough to play him that well.

Hodgson doesn't exactly have a great bunch to choose from either as Rooney aside, the rest have only just managed to get into double figures for League goals. Pretty poor, actually.

as we know there's not exactly a big pool of strikers (or players in any position) who are top, top footballers #jamieredknapp

little strikers
wellbeck
campbell
sturridge
rooney
bent
agbonlahor
defoe
hooper

big strikers
crouch
carroll
zamora
davies
holt

out of that lot, who knows? apart from rooney there's a case for and against any of them

I'd go with those four as well. Why take people like Bent and Defoe who've had chances and aren't good enough? At least Carrol, Welbeck and Sturridge have time to improve.

Please don't take Carroll, what a big streak of useless urine he is, he looks half decent for 2-3 games and everyone starts frothing at the gash about him.

I don't know why so many think Carroll will get picked. Up until only very recently, he has had a shocking season!! Holt/Crouch definitely deserve a place instead of him along with Welbeck and Rooney IMO

He'd be the first striker I'd pick after Rooney. Of course he's worth nothing like £35 million but he's in form, is decent technically and will give other teams problems. We're nowhere near good enough to pass it through teams so I'd play proper wide men like Adam Johnson, Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, get it wide and get in the box quickly. We'll cause better teams than us more problems doing that than we will trying to play through them.

Not much of a choice is it ?

Rooney will not play in the 1st 2 games,

SO  Hooper will be our best bet to score the goals until Rooney can play.

Holt is a better player than Crouch or Carroll,

Hearn is a better player than the rest.

I would only take 2 keepers. I've never seen the point in 3 - it's rare that two get used. Use the extra place for an outfield player

My thinking too. We aren't as technically good as most the teams. Lets bully them with pace and strength and you don't get much stronger than Carroll. There is a case for Holt in there but I think Carroll has more about him and has just hit form. He hasn't been great for Liverpool but was immense for Newcastle.

I think roy will go with, Rooney, Welbeck and Bent. With Walcott and Sturridge who can play in a few positions, also in the squad.

I would only take 2 keepers. I've never seen the point in 3 - it's rare that two get used. Use the extra place for an outfield player

Its a ruling that there has to be 3 keepers in a squad I believe. I cant find the article at the moment but an international team attempted to only name 2 keepers and an extra striker. Were told they couldnt and the ensuing problems led to them being fined.

Defoe is awful imo. Holt and Crouch deserve to go imo and Sturridge can play uptop or further wide.

I don't know why so many think Carroll will get picked. Up until only very recently, he has had a shocking season!! Holt/Crouch definitely deserve a place instead of him along with Welbeck and Rooney IMO

This is so true, Carroll has had an awful season, and if he gets put in ahead of Crouch (who has a decent international scoring record), it would be a massive injustice.

As forwards go, i would take Rooney, Crouch, Defoe & Welbeck. But i think Sturridge will go as a winger.

I can see why people think Holt should get a chance as well, but not in the Euro's, when he's never played international before. He could flop big time.

But only time will tell what Roy thinks. And G.Nev of course.

Because when he plays well he is unstoppable. The same cannot be said about Crouch. And he only scores against the crap international teams.

But can we risk taking Carroll if he's going to play shocking like he does 75% of the time. I know this can be said about any player we might take, but i just think we should go for players who have had all-round better seasons. And for me, Crouch has just had a great season.
I was in the Bolton end on sunday away at Stoke, and his control of the ball and ability to bring other players into the game is phenomenal,

Carroll is a carthorse. He'll be penalised left, right and centre by the referees in international football. Holt is less of a carthorse but will still be penalised by the refs for strong challenges and, I think, also lacks the pace for international football.

I'm not really a fan, but I suppose Defoe has scored here and there at international level so I'd have him in the squad in the hope that he gets on a goalscoring run. I think Welbeck will go for his mobility and work rate. Sturridge has a good bit of ability but has not been in good form of late.

But why not Holt instead, he's done the job all season, and is a cracking finisher too, he's a big illegitimate who has played the role better than Carroll all year.

I honestly think Carroll is a better player. He's had a poor season but he's never had that much of a run and the £35m price tag seemed to be a millstone. He has played a lot better in the past couple of months and he's young - he completely bullied Terry in the game and a half he faced him in recently. Re Holt, I don't think we have a chance of winning it, so I wouldn't take a player who's 31 and has had one season in the top flight. He's done really well for Norwich but I think international football will be beyond him. It might be beyond Carroll but he at least has time on his side.

To be fair, going on making fun of John Terry, even Tommy Wright would run him ragged these days.

I'd take Carroll over Holt.

If Carroll had been playing for Norwich all season i bet he would have had a better season than Holt. Liverpool don't play to his strengths in general so he's not had much to go on. Why they bought a £35m striker and don't put balls in the box or occasionally go direct is beyond me.

Norwich mix it up a bit and use Holt to his strengths, so he's shone this year. That said, he's not a cap yet and it's a bit too late now to throw someone into a tournament unless they're something really special. If he continues to do well in the traditionally tougher second season up in the prem, then have him in the squads for games next season.

I also don't think Sturridge deserves to go. People say Carroll's only come good at the end of the season, but Sturridge was only decent at the start of the season (under AVB). His decision making is very poor, possibly through trying too hard to impress to stay in the team. Should probably leave Chelsea to get regular football.

I'd take Rooney, Welbeck and Carroll. As the 4th striker i'd probably have to go for Defoe. Which shows the real lack of quality in this position that we have at the moment. It seems like he's barely had a look in for Spurs this season but he's still managed 11 league goals. Would be a different option as a poacher to try and nick a goal late in games if needed. Couldn't justify taking Bent over Defoe when Bent hasn't played since February through injury and only managed 9 league goals anyway.
