The away game at Braintree was not just a sad night because of the result it was also the night that Matty Dawson sadly passed away.
I remember the night well. I was all set to go to Braintree but I had to go into Hull Royal Infirmary and that very day was when I had my last major op. When I came round later that evening and heard the score I thought I must be dreaming and still in the operating thearte.
The next morning, there I was sat in my armchair by the side of my bed with my head bandaged up, feeling sorry for myself and thinking about the result when I heard that Matty had passed away overnight. It put everything into perspective and my problems and Town's problem just did not matter anymore.
I'm not sure if the players are aware of this or if Matty actually knew the score that night but Town losing 5-0 at Braintree could well have been Matty's last memory of Grimsby Town so lets hope we put things right on Saturday. Not just for our play-off hopes but also in Matty Dawson's memory.

Agree with Gazza...very well put Les
I remember seeing Matty from a distance as we trudged out after Fleetwood had beaten us
The disappointment of losing that game doesn't even compare in the slightest the plight that Matty had to endure and his family have to live with still
Hopefully the Mariners will put on a show on Saturday that will give our number "24" a lasting tribute

I remember being on holiday that week, checking my phone while watching some entertainment show with my family and giving up at 3-0 down. Checked my phone again for the final score and report the next morning, ready to be seething with rage at Town and saw the Matty headline. Didn't bother checking in on Town again that week. Very sad that, as Les says, that was the last match Matty may have managed to keep tabs with. Hope we can get a bag full of goals this Saturday.

Was it really that long ago? Great post Les, very sad. Looked through the squad on the OS a few weeks ago and saw him listed as 24. Was very sad to suddenly se that and remember, but brought a smile to my face that the club had done this for him. Come on town let's paste them 12-0.

I seem to recall his brother posting that he didn't know anything about the result on the night at the time.

Great post Les down at the park this morn to pick up tickets for some mates, had a tear or 2 when i looked up at the gates. Lets hope the boys can keep this run going and get us into the play offs, on the 8th of Aug when the managers visited him in hospital, they asked him his prediction for this coming season, and without hesitation he said the play offs. It would be a fitting tribute for Matty if we could make it all the way Wembley and reclaim our place back in the football league. Matty always use to say to me you have seen the good and the bad times, all i have seen is the bad times.

After all the recent posts regarding the trust, Fenty, shares, ownership, the York defeat amongst others, what a fantastic post and one that makes everything a little clearer. UP THE MARINERS!

Matty & Richard were both top lads and are missed on our battlebus jaunts. It would be brilliant if we could repay their faith in GTFC and get back into the league

The top corner of the Pontoon will be in full voice for Matty and Rich , hope there is a big crowd. Would be great to hear 'Matt and Richards black and white Army' echoing around blundell park.

I will personally try myself to get the chant going as not only is it a great memory and a touching one, i also realise some of Mattys family that sit in the middle-left of the pontoon look across with the biggest smiles on their faces and could not be prouder, also a game in which we have recently lost and need to get back on track and not let it bring us down. Do it for Matty lads.

^Well said , saw them all at the Lincoln game and all had their relation to Matty on the back of their shirts (Matty's Brother 24 etc...). All deservedly very proud of the lad

It's the same with Rich's parents they loved every second of the atmosphere we created for him/them. I just wish they'd have been here in person(s) I can't make Saturdays game but I'll be singing away to myself in my asda van thinking of all the good times.
