Evening all,

Last season there way a few people who suggested we organise a friendly against Aalst, this is now developing into a real possibility.

Tom, who posts under the name 'Flemish Mariner' on here has had multiple chats with Aalst's new chairman about the possibility of a friendly. He has also talked about the possibility of Aalst traveling to Gy and the Chairman responded positively.

Tom is trying to get the Chairman to make a formal approach to Town so I thought I'd get a few ideas from here about how many people would turn up? I suppose any foreign team would generate more interest than a friendly with the likes of Brigg.

Thoughts please...

good idea! ive always thought it would be good to play a 4 team tournament. maybe 4 teams that:

a. play in the same style shirts (doubt we'll play juve though)

b. have kits manufactured by the same company

c. have links in some way with each other i.e. twinned towns, players played for both clubs, fishing heritage

just a thought.

the likes of Brigg???

I think its a good shout. Maybe the preseason after GTFC could do the same and set up a package deal for fans wanting to do the return leg as their annual holiday. Or invite a few teams to Cleethorpes to play in a mini tournament. Creating links with other clubs could be beneficial  and loan each other players and stuff

It'd probably be on a par for me.
You'd be looking at a 1000-1500 gate max IMHO.

Maybe they have a few guys who'd be up for playing the Internet Mariners in the morning?

Turn it into a charity game to raise some money for the Trust to donate to the YT?

After speaking with Tom I was very pleased to hear his chairmans ambition.

I am glad you posted this Sutton, I would have been sneered at for mentioning this.

This could create a strong friendship and a great ope rtunity for both clubs!

I am looking forward to see what happens

Marinerian must be cumming in his long johns at the thought of this. Hopefully we'll have that supporters bar open at Cottees by then so all their fans can join us to watch some old town games on beta max on a old tv in the corner. You never know, we might even have moved into our trawler shaped stadium by then, what a game this would be to open it!

Like SuttonMariner said, we had a good chat with our new chairman last Friday and he was interested in organising a friendly (away)game. I'm gathering information and contacts for him now and he promised me when he's got the needed info, he'll contact GTFC soon to see what's possible between the 2 clubs. btw, GTFC is doing abolutely briljant at the moment, you will get to play-offs!!!
We won 3-1 against one of our biggest rivals Oostende.

Hi all,

I have proposed this friendly game to our new chairman, together with Flemishmariner from this forum.
We immediatly asked to play at Grimsby. Just because we would love to play an away game at England.
Our last foreign game was in 1996 at AS Roma. So we are waiting for quit a long time

We really hope this game will take place, it would be like a (tiny) dream comming true!
Maybe when this is a succes, next year Grimsby can visit us? Would be awesome!

Our team now plays in the second division in Belgium. We are playing very well this season, we just made promotion from the 3rd league and in our first season in 2nd we are on the 6th place!
The only trouble is our financial situation, we need money   But I think, everywhere they have this problem

Glad to see Grimsby is doing so well lately! Hopefully they can play in the play offs!

This is pure awesomeness! Brilliant.

You'll probably need a fair bit of interest from your fellow supporters though to make a trip to Gy worth it. Do you think there will be enough Aalst fans willing to make the journey?

and everywhere we follow, we follow, we follow
cause we support "den iendracht", den iendracht, den iendracht  (den iendracht off course in our own dialect)

I really hope this comes off. Hopefully GTFC could return the fixture and work closely.

Link up youth teams and business links.

Maybe Gier could organise a Norwegian team to join in and have a tournament?

We just heard within our own fanclub, and we have about 40 people that are allready interested to make the trip! In total there are 6 fanclubs in Aalst, so we hope that the other fanclubs are as positive as we are! It is necesary to bring some fans with us, otherwise it wouldn't be interesting for our chairman and for sponsers to sponser the trip for our team

Our chairman now has contact adresses, let's hope they will arange something!

I'd be up for the game, home or away: always going to Belgium on drinking trips, this would just be another excuse to go!

This sounds fantatic and hope it comes off, it will be great to host you guys. Maybe this is something the Mariners Trust can also be involved with and organise somekind of event to drum up local interest and raise some much needed funds?

Also is it worth your clubs while to organise games with other local sides? We have a range of clubs within 60 miles of Grimsby (from non league to football league sides) so would it best for your club to have a 3 - 5 game tour rather then coming for 1 game?

PM me if you want any information for any of our local non league sides

This team isn't non-league like us mate: they've got history and fell apon hard times (like us), but are now going places (hopefully like us). Scunny and Donny might be interested though?

if you want to check out some great video's from Aalst I would say these movies are the one you need to see

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rog0oFWjwQI&feature=related   this was 2years ago during the play offs! We lost that game, but it was super atmosphere!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLJ3e6ucQKs   this was one month ago, it was our derby (away!) Kind off like Grimsby playing against Lincoln I guess

I've been to Aalst, it's a great day out so if it can be organised for the Onion crew to come to BP that would be fantastic. If there is anything as stupid as segregation then I'm going into the Osmond stand with the Eendracht boys. If town were having a crap season then I'd be back to Belgium before the season was over but I'm sure that Tom and the rest of the the Aalst fans understand why I'm sticking with the Mariners at the moment. I am however wearing my Aalst scarf to all the town games at the moment

UTM & Eendracht forever!

Yes we did, and still do... But we can allways ask For us, the fans, it would be great to play a game in an other country! And when we have the corperation from our chairman, why not? We visitedTtown allready 5 times, a couple of Town fans I know for several years now... It would be fantastic for us to play against Town!

Just keep on dreaming, and maybe one day it will!!

I emailed John Fenty and got a very quick reply.

He basicly said:

That their officials should contact Ian Flemming as he organises freindlies.

The managers will have the final say but he has no problem with the question being asked.

It was a really nice  email.

I really want to go to Aalst may have to go on the ferry soon.

Tom is their fans club orginiser. He is a great lad and I enjoy chatting about Aalst and Town.

They both play in black & white was how it originally started i think, when the Aalst fans were looking around for an English team to support, although might be wrong.

Those clips are great, brilliant atmosphere, would like to see this friendly come off, go over there another year too.

Would be great to reinforce the links with clubs from abroad. Don't see why this would be a problem and why RS and PH would see it as a problem.

Yes I can,

I think it was 6years ago, that me and some Aalst fans were thinking about making a football trip. But not a trip to a famous football club, we wanted a club a bit similar to ours.
So we started looking. Because England is the "home of football" we wanted to go to England and started in the lower leagues. We came out with Grimsby Town, read about it.

It was just the same as Aalst! Playing in Black and White, used to play high and then relegated by financial problems, and now working on the way back.

We went the first time, and allready found contact with Ian true the internet. He showd us arround, went with us tot the fanshop, said were we could found the best bars, lovely!
We had a great time that weekend, and since then we came back allmost every year.

Now we are going one step further, and try to leth Aalst and Town play a friendly game! Then we can make a weekend with 50lads in stead of the usual 5-10

Still no news about it from our chairman, but that is normal. They are working hard to geth their "license". You need it to play the next season in the same league, otherwise you relegate one league. And since we have a bit of a money problem, it will be difficult to geth the license. Once we know if we are getting the "license" they gonna make work of the friendly game against Town!!

Here are the fixtures. The last game against Dender will be an interesting one, this is like Town v Scunny, they hate each other  http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eendracht-aalst.be%2F

Only a suggestion   Plus Town play at 1pm v Southport on the 28th.

If not Antwerp away, didn't they used to be a top league club in Belgium too?

Here are the fixtures. The last game against Dender will be an interesting one, this is like Town v Scunny, they hate each other  http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eendracht-aalst.be%2F

Only a suggestion   Plus Town play at 1pm v Southport on the 28th.

If not Antwerp away, didn't they used to be a top league club in Belgium too?

Antwerp were champions league a few years back weren't they ? That would be a good day out . I'm in . Could get a few Louth to come along no problem

personally i dont see what the whole fuss about this supposed friendly is about? there has been countless posts on the fishy for quite a while now about this tinpot belgian club, Who cares i'm a grimsby town supporter and i'm not interested in how they are getting on week in week out, too me it sounds like you lot just wanna go hang around with there lot hold hands and sing kum ba yah together and pretend that our too clubs have something in common. I've never understood this whole allegiance thing some teams have with each other to be honest.

feel free to send plenty of abuse my way, just expressing my opinion thats all

I really hope this comes off. Hopefully GTFC could return the fixture and work closely.

Link up youth teams and business links.

Maybe Gier could organise a Norwegian team to join in and have a tournament?

What possible benefit would it have to send a bunch of 16/17 year old English kids over to play in Belgium, and vice versa?

And what business links?

If we have no reserve team. . . which we don't, what harm would it do to give a young lad the chance to play cometitive football in another country?

????????? Why the hell would we organise a charity event for their club when OUR club needs it more? Or shall we just let JF keep bailing us out until the day he says no more and we then wish we had all done more, but at least the headlines for helping another team out while ours goes down the pan. Honestly some people post some shite

Just because you choose to donate to a good cause doesn't mean you can't contribute to another - I think what Coxy was suggesting was in the spirit of football.

Answer Ska: European football is very different. Diets, training and much more often varey.

By exchanging players could give the oppertunity for both sets of players to learn about different styles of football and cultures.

Maybe their could be a need for a certain type of business or product ,maybe there isn't. Such a friendship could open oppertunities.

I have an open mind and I realise not everyone will agree and some will take pleasure in giving abuse...not aimed at you Ska may I add.

Antwerp didn't play champions league, but they are the oldest club in Belgium and the last team playing a European final (1994 against Parma @ Wembley)

They're playing in 2nd class for several years now and are struggling to get into 1st class again
