Not sure you can spoil a party with no creativity and I’m not sure there’s much in that 11.

Why Taylor. ????
Statue has more movement.

Bet khouri and braithwaite are well drunk.

Nice for the youth to get blooded in a pointless end of season match.

You kind of do wonder why pick Taylor, must be for his physicality simply for this game.

However I would have much rathered Orsi kept his place as we still need to see more, to see whether he's  capable of playing a larger part for us next season or not.

Taylor last year... 100% I'd have him start vs these.
intercourse their height and physicality. Get the ball down and play around them. We have 2 or 3 big enough defenders to use for free kicks / corners. Urgh. Only positive is Lloyd starting.

Bear in mind it is less than 48 hours until our next game and it's been a long season for the squad. On the assumption that a draw today would be a decent result, having graft in the middle and a bit more of a physical presence UK front whilst keeping Orsi fresh ready for the home game on Monday seems reasonable.

Id expect us to have 4 at the back on Monday.

If PH is looking to see if Ryan still has anything to offer you think he’d know by now.

Hurst was shitting himself over our defending at set pieces on Tuesday so he's picked him for his height against a 'bigger' side today - only explanation I can think of.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Don't know why we have this debate over the team every game. PH picks the side he feels has the best chance of getting a result.

He's probably still also making up his mind on a few things.

He's not doing too bad all in all if you look at the bigger picture.

I'm fully behind Hurst but i just don't see Taylor offering anything recently, just my opinion.  This doesn't mean I don't trust PH and for all I know he'll be outstanding today and bag a brace. But if we didn't say how.we felt on a fans forum then what's the point of the forum

Things that are hurting us,

Glennons inability to pass a ball today, he's just not having the rub of the green at all.
Taylor marking their no.5 at set pieces, he's lost him every time and he's the one who keeps winning that first header.
The brown enverlope fatty Evans slipped the ref.

Things we're doing well,

We're forcing alot of corners
Green is bullying their midifeld
The back 3 are doing a good job of keeping the pressure off Max in open play

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

I once said Gazza's IQ was less than his shirt number and he asked me: What's an IQ? - George Best

Mariners TV being a pain in the bottom.

On the match, Taylor’s done as a pro IMO.

I'm on a dodgy firestick and that's been buffering a fair bit. I switched to the Stevenage stream and it's fine albeit a few minutes behind and the commentary team sound like local commercial radio DJ's. Town really need to mix up these Maher long throws, throw it short now and then to at least give a sense of mystery to the defenders.

If it works, it works. But my god its boring.

We seem to play to their strength which is heading. They are good at it. We must play on the deck.
Can't see Hurst changing that.

Ffs, the usual unmarked man. 3 of them there and he gets a free header

Three centre halves and they let a lad who's about 5ft7 win a header between the three of them. Awful stuff.

The fukin times that's happened this season.
Three of  our defenders can't mark one bloke in the box ffs

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Amos needs to be tighter there to the cross. Centre half needs to be tighter to Reid.

Get Taylor off.

Need a brand new midfield to build around Hunt, look like they have been stuck in mud all season trying to run to support attacks, it's been absolutely painful to watch even with our recent form it's just a chore to watch. Massive surgery needed in the summer and he needs to be ruthless and get rid of half of this deadwood.

No, I have Bournemouth but 64 others went Brentford... it starts with 3,600 people and as it stand we're down to less than 100 if Brentford don't win.

Our pass completion so far today is an embarrassing 48%. We've given possession away more often than we've actually found a teammate when passing the ball - Efete's only completed an appalling 6 passes out of 21 attempts!. For comparison we found a teammate with 74% of passes on Tuesday night, with Hunt completing 79% of his passes, Khouri at 74% and Khan up at 85%.

Nobody likes to get beat but this is a game that probably confirms to Hurst what he already know about this squad.

Of the out of contract players I only expect Max & Josh Emanuel to be offended deals and i imagine he’ll ask the question about Andy Smith.

Some of the players on deals will probably told they won’t be get many starts as well.

It's because we insist in hoofing the ball up front for their giants to easily clear their lines.

Let’s hope so. Some of these are simply not good enough for the EFL.

Out of the current squad what I'd keep:

Crocombe (Been shocking last 2 months)
Waterfall
Efete (Back-up)
Maher (Maybe)
Clifton
Hunt
Khan
Lloyd
Khouri
Orsi (Back-up)

The only positive for me today is that Brighton are beating Wolves 6 - 0, which makes our 5 - 0 defeat more bearable

Second half
Absolutely dog excrement

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Holohan gives the goal away.

Loses the ball or gives it away on a regular basis in bad areas, costing us goals directly or indirectly.

Need better.

Were better off giving Stevenage a leg up to get rid of them. Lost count of how many times I've there and seen us get stuffed.
It was there when I first realised Bignot had lost the plot. Then when Slade was in charge I at least thought we'd be organised but no.

Even though people will meltdown i don't think we have learnt anything new today .
-Taylor's race is run , no knee jerk reaction and he was vital in partnership with Mcatee for our promotion but you would be carrying him if retained .

Holahan - not good enough to be a consistent starter , will be okay for odd games but a team can't be built around him .

-Time to find some decent wide players so we can revert to a version of 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 .

Cropper needs retaining , that weapon in league 2 would be priceless , i don't know why we persist with Mahers long throw.

We could still finish 10th which would be a good season , and a tick in the box of 'continuous improvement ' the budget will have to be stretched in the summer and some cute moves made to take us to the next level , of which I feel will be the minimum requirement (top 7 minimum )

You have the full summer
Over to you Paul

Very disappointing and concerning that we haven’t made 1 chance.
No shame in losing to promotion chasers, but pretty poor as a performance.

Just seen Northampton losing at home…be flipping hilarious if they lose out on automatic promotion again, on goal difference…

And just realised Stockport have a relegated side that have conceded plenty of goals just like Bristol Rovers last year…

Passing needs to be better.  We often player it behind the intended target or so tight into feet that the receiver needs one or two touches to get it under control.  By that time, somebody is on top of them.

20, 30 odd yard passes won't cut it. Most players to far apart from each other. Hoofing it str8 past midfield 9 times out of 10. Passing, I don't know how many times without looking, apart from that, ,,,

Yep. Bet our 5 at the back team selection had them quaking in their boots. We can’t even have a positive team selection when we’ve got nothing to play for.

Steve evans 9 promotions in his career pretty impressive even if he is a kunt

Kunt or not he knows how to get the best out of a bunch of pretty average players, I know which manager I'd have in our dugout if given a choice.

I don't think they will .

Supporters much like the players are tired out , true a couple of signings will help but after a period of reflection and recuperation, I think sales will still be high .

It's rather ironic really. From 7th in the National League to (hopefully) top half finish in the league. Quater finals in the FA Cup. Good progress on and off the field yet I have never wanted a season to end as I do this one. I expect both the players and management team feel the same.
I hope we get the recruitment right this summer. The support this season home and away has been brilliant. Really feel that the fans deserve a decent signing or two which as we know may mean pushing the boat out a little. Dont always buy this geography thing - may well see where our ambitions lie over the next few months.

I expect they will be down, they were freakishly high this season, and the large number of no shows backs that up. 5k would be a good outcome.

We all know the squad isn’t good enough to kick on. I expect early activity in the market.

On another note Plymouth promoted today, if Luton go up in the play-offs is that another first, beating two teams from higher divisions that both went on to be promoted?

What constitutes a decent signing though?

PH has a knack of signing players who get the response of "who"? Then turn out to be pretty decent.

Yep and some that don't! I trust Hurst's judgement so let me put it another way. A signing that wets the appetite a little rather than "who" all the time. We've seen many other teams in this league pull it off so it would be nice to have one or two ourselves. A constant top up of Under 23's hasn't particuarly worked for us. However I won't complain if there is another "who?" and turns into another gem.

And in the 2nd half today it showed.

Dead Eye Dobbin stood motionless waiting, waiting, waiting for the ball to arrive. Back came the right foot, Down came the right foot, Bang ! Headlines around the world as the ball flew into the very top right hand corner of the goal.( Jim Dobbin scoring in the 89th minute for Town against Newcastle United away 24/10/1992 )

I would imagine that a few players that come in for next season would be recognisable to some posters in name only and less posters would have an understanding of what kind of player they are.

Well yeah, but that's irrelevant to my point. They did the job they were brought in to do, and most haven't made the step up, but we are now looking at what is to come, not what has been.

It's obvious we went up quicker than imagined and got caught out a bit with some who haven't made the grade, but were under contract.

Next season will be different, but my point is that we will sign some players who we've not really heard of who will turn out to be better than we thought. Bit like Lloyd, whose signing wasn't met with universal approval.

We’ve had two windows since promotion yet 9 out of the starting 11 today played non league last season. It’s relevant. As someone else mentioned, we need at least 6 or 7 debutants at the end of July as most of this lot aren’t going to progress us.

It's not relevant. It's the past and it happened and I'm talking about what's to come, not constantly banging on about what we should have done.

The reasons we ended up with a majority non league squad in the EFL are well documented. We couldn't just boot them all out because they did the almost impossible and got us promoted ahead of when we all thought it would happen.

12th in the EFL league 2 with a non league team aint bad is it?

It seems that some on here want promotion every season and if we don't get it we are rubbish. They Don't seem to understand that you sometimes have to pause and take stock and rebuild. As others have said we went up and then didn't have the time pre season because of the world Cup.
It's going to be interesting to see what we come up with given that we have a proper summer break and a little extra to spend because of our cup exploits.

I think just establishing ourselves as a league 2 Club that hovers around the play offs / top 3 for the next 2 seasons is a good start . I certainly don't want to be looking at the bottom half of league 2 any more . I'm a fan of 43 years and have seen the good times so perhaps I'm biased

I don’t expect us to get promoted next season but I’m expecting us to be a bit more aggressive, hold and pass the ball like professional footballers should do and win some more games at home.

The argument isn’t black or white.

I’ll put it in a different context. Our two main contenders for Player of the Year were here when we were relegated. Not one signing from last summer has even been mentioned when it comes to Player of the Year. Yes, the promoted team has done a great job but the continuous improvement will come from new additions not what we’ve got now.

Is it fair to say that neither McAtee nor Taylor have played as well post injuries this year?

I also believe that the amount of games, distances travelled, and lack of proper training time between league and cup games with required squad changes from cup tied players have all contributed to how the end of season is playing out.

Mid table placing, and a hugely unexpected cup run should be enough, but many fans expect promotions every year with top quality players of the ilk of Wrexham's spending power, which is totally unrealistic.

For me, a disappointment is the poor passing and lack of ball control that has crept into the side. This allows opposition players a good chance to chase and harry our lads, with today's second half being a prime example.

Another chasing shadows game, albeit with the officials missing every Evans led system of pushes and nudges to knock players off balance.

2nd goal - their offside player runs across Crocombe's eyeline, but not given ????

Having said that, they played more aggressively and chased everything - even 1st half, they ruled the 2nd half play.

One more game, then the summer prediction thread can run riot !!

If we'd have kept the same 11 as the last game or just made 1 change and brought Lloyd in and we lost 2 0 I wouldn't mind as much. Its the constant tinkering of formation and playing someone like Taylor who's never going to play on the efl again after this season. We dominated and played some good football in patches last game. Someone posted earlier the 3 players with the highest percentage of accurate passes all got dropped to the bench and we played long ball and matched their game play. Why?
I'm not angry or going to be annoyed for long. In fact I'll wake up tomorrow and not care, but if I was 1 of those 700 odd who travelled I'd be drunk.

If we manage a top half finish, it will be the first time we've done so in the League since 2006. I think that would have to be considered a success.

I was hoping for an improvement in our passing game with the better weather along with better pitches but today the ball spent more time in the air than on the ground and which suited Stevenage as they are a big side, First half I thought we contained them pretty well but Glennon wasted our corner kicks. Holohan had a poor game and was caught out for the 2nd goal and has been a disappointment just recently. Everyone is tired from a long season but we do need some quality additions to the team and hopefully play  a lot better at Blundell Park next season.

But that is what teams like Stevenage do. They close you down and force you to hit it long, which suits them.

The Crewe game the other night was totally different and they gave us time and space to play.

If we'd played the same team as the Crewe game today, we would have got battered.

We now need players that are better on the ball and can beat the press of teams like Stevenage by playing through them, and I'm sure that is what we will be looking to do in the close season.

Not sure what you want. You don’t want the same team as we played against Crewe, who were demonstrably better on the ball, but you want players that are better on the ball?

Why not? Look what Steve Evans has done with no money. Why can’t we expect Hurst to make a big are forward over the summer and us have a proper automatic promotion challenge next season?

To do that you need to pick players that can pass the ball.

There’s no doubt that circumstances this summer are drastically more favourable than last year - we have 89 days between our last and first games, versus only 54 the in 2022. Factor in that we’ve realistically known what division we would be in for months, and it’s a totally different equation.

We know by now that Hurst, though by no means perfect, is a very solid manager who will utilise his budget shrewdly, and our budget next season should be comfortably the biggest in real terms than it has been for many, many years. My hopes and expectations are absolutely in terms of pushing for promotion in some way, shape or form.

But then you do need to take a step back and consider who else will have similar aspirations. We will of course be up against media darlings Wrexham, who will blow everyone out of the water financially, but the money doesn’t stop there. We will also be in League Two with at least 5 or 6 of the following:

Stockport
Bradford
Salford
Mansfield
Swindon
Forest Green
MK Dons
Notts County

That’s up to 9 clubs who will almost certainly have a tangibly larger budget than us, and I’m probably missing another couple of less obvious examples.

I’m not trying to make pre-emptive exclusives; I have no agenda other than wanting us to do well. But like the version of the National League we found ourselves in two years ago, next year’s League Two table is going to be unusually well heeled. I think we’ll see the biggest real terms spending of any League Two season ever, in totality.

I’m still very optimistic, we overcame a string of richer adversaries to win promotion back to the league last year. But it’s also important to be objective; we’re not the only club that will feel promotion is the aim next season and certainly not the club with the fattest wallet.

Well, I didn't say that, but crack on.

As well as we played against Crewe the other night, they were pretty lightweight and they wouldn't have handled the much more aggressive and mobile Stevenage side we played today, which is why PH radically changed the team.

We seem to be at cross purposes. I'm talking about the new players that are to come, who will more than likely be better on the ball than those we have now, whereas you keep referencing the players we have now.

Every season ??
Disagree....I don't think any genuine,  experienced supporter would want or expect that...as a very well experienced supporter.of a certain age I can assure you that what I want is to be entertained....to walk down Grimsby Rd at 2.45p.m in hope and with some expectation that I will see my team be victorious....or at least give their all to try and win.
Unfortunately there have been too many occasions this season where that hasn't seemed to be the case.

I agree. This season, in my opinion, has been good when you look at what we've achieved and where we will be finishing in the league table. It's just the small things that are frustrating regards team selection and tactics in some games... In a couple of years onwards I'll look back on this season fondly because of the fa cup run.

Ok. The new players that are to come. As Poojah has said, we are only likely to have a mid table budget and we are still geographically where we are. Most of our midfield are still under contract and we still have a manager who, for very acceptable reasons, doesn’t want to have big differentials between wages. I’m still quite concerned about who we’re likely to attract especially given how the last two windows went.

Most teams that do well have a solid spine to the side, and they very rarely rotate the team.

If you  look at those teams promoted or near the top I bet they don't rotate as much.

The rotation on mass did not start until we were safe. PH just making his mind up on formation, and who he wants to keep?

I'm looking forward to promotion next season, so being in the top 3 it has to be. A playoff place at a minimum and anything else will be a poor season; as we'll finish 11thish this season.

Didn't enjoy the game once Stenenage scored. Thought we held our own 1st half, but what a waste of who knows how many corners and throw ins in the first 20 mins when we could have took advantage of how nervous they were, just clearing their lines, Then they realised we were toothless up front and we needed Crocramp to keep us in it. Thought Taylor was alright for the first part of the game. Ref seemed a bit of a homer but nothing like as bad as some we have had lately. 2nd half Fatty had sussed us and knew how to get at us and closed us down a lot better in midfield and we never put 3 passes together and their goal was inevitable. After that we never got a kick they scored the 2nd they deserved and showed how to see out a game comfortably. They certainly wanted it more and quicker to every loose ball in 2nd half. Think we had 2 shots on target all game, 2 dribblers straight into the keepers hands. All Hursts changes during 2nd half did was confuse any semblance of shape we had in 2nd half and but for Crocramp could have lost by 4 or 5. Did Taylor touch the ball in the 2nd half? So glad it was a dead rubber for us. Positives for the day, we got out of the carpark quickly since all their fans were still in the stadium and got to spend some time with Younger Son Of and Younger Son Ofs Wife, nothing better than seeing family.
Think big changes needed next season.

I'm not too concerned about what happened in the January window. It's generally thin pickings then, unless you've got a lot of money to spend and Lloyd turned out to be a decent signing (albeit on loan) and Emmanuel has been OK as well. If we'd managed to sign Hopper and he'd ended up with the same return as Lloyd, we'd have been happy enough.

With more preparation time this year, we'll hopefully see the signings we need to strengthen and push on next season.

It will be interesting to see how Hurst plans us to line up next season. I suspect we'll be back to a back four, unless there is really major surgery to the squad, but the bulk of the defence is under contract, I believe. I suppose you could say that we have at least got a good deal of experience playing with 5 in defence so we could see chopping and changing again next season.

As usual, I expect to see us sign a load of players I've never heard of before.

Once again I'm looking at Poojah and nodding in agreeance.
We have to aim for the play offs but as Poojah has said there is alot more teams with bigger budgets than us. So if we do manage to get in the top 7 hats off to our manager.
