Who knows?

I reckon a couple of loanees will come in tomorrow and straight into the team in true Hurst style. I would say that the picture Disley posted earlier would mean he is a doubt for Tuesday with a very swollen eye.

They have the worst away record in the league, so any combination of players should be too much for them, he says, only half convinced.

I agree........... a loanee straight into the defence with either Toto or Tait left on the subs bench.

Batch, K.Moore, Waters, Wiggington, Crombie, Brolly, Ford, Drinkell, Mitchell, Cumming, Kilmore. D.Moore, Stone, Liddell. ....1979/80..... now that WAS a team.

I'd prefer seeing Tomlinson start ahead of Amond on Tuesday, think he brings more to the team. Tomlinson and Bogle looked like a great pairing yesterday, these two could lead us to promotion if consistently picked. Tomlinson offers us much more than any other striker currently at the club. He has a strikers instinct which I haven't seen in any of our other players, a real eye for goal.

If so that's another complete PH p1ss take.

Macca, Tait, East, Toto, Shaun, Dis, Clay, Arnold, Marshall (McKreth, if Marshall is injured) Omar and Podge. They are not that good away so lets get a couple of youngsters on the bench too,

Monkhouse needs a 'rest'... but I fear he is undroppable and certainly unsubbable (not sure that's a word)

Back five picks itself with injuries from Saturday

Marshall (if fit) for Monkhouse

Bogle and Amond up top

Its hard to pick a team without knowing who's available at the moment,

Mckeown

Tait
Nsiala
Pearson (c)
East

Mackreth/ Marshall
Clay
Disley/ Monkhouse
Arnold

Amond
Bogle

Bastock or Warrington
Clifton/ Disley
Venney
Marshall/ Mackreth
Tomlinson

Reading posts that we might be without Disley, Marshall carrying a knock, Gowling and Roberston and still be without Brown. And not knowing if we have had any extra additions by the time we play Halifax this was the best team available for me.

If Marshall is fit he will play, also think i said at the time keep Matt Robinson for the extra month or 2 with brown being no where near being fit. Hurst might have to get back on the phone to John Still to get Robinson in. Its going to be differcult getting anybody else in at short notice.

I think Monkhouse is 'undroppable' because Hurst has come to the conclusion that he is pretty much the only one of our forwards who is any good in the air at all.

In away matches, especially, I reckon a bit of aerial ability (both in attack and defence) is very useful to the team.

That said, against Halifax, if we can put together a strong enough team not featuring Monkhouse, we ought to be capable of passing it along the ground enough to reduce the need for aerial ability in attack, at least.

It looks like a new loan player will be in but in what position,?

Defender, Midfield or striker,

You guess.

I'm half expecting, in true Paul Hurst-bafflement style, a new keeper on the bench.

Seriously, this is turning into a bit of a pressure game when it really shouldn't be. Just put Bogle and Amond up front and attack/score. Like we did just a few weeks ago.

It's a no brainer for me, it's Halifax at home play Bogel and Almond up front with Arnold and Jack out wide and build up our goal difference.
Anything else would be madness

I'd play this team too. And if Disley doesn't make it with his eye looking a right state, play Venney in his place.

I have been impressed on occasion but he does seem to have his place every game regardless of how he plays. Whether it is how he comes back from poor performances and impresses in training I don't know.

We need to make full use of tomorrow's game. Let's give them a tonking by playing our top scoring strikers and pacey, threatening wide midfielders in Arnold and Marshall.

I would go with the general consensus of Arnold and Marshall out wide.

Up top Amond and Tomlinson.  Last few performances I've seen and from the reports of Saturday, Bogle doesn't merit a place in the starting eleven.  He has to learn that not putting effort in results in him not starting games.

I don't think Tomlinson is that bad, although I do understand he had (along with a few others) a shocker at the weekend.  I like his work rate and as disappointing as his return in front of goal is so far, we have conceded far fewer since he came into the team.  I get it, strikers should score goals - not prevent them.  There needs to be a balance between the free scoring of early season and the more defensive mindset of late.    I personally think adding some proper width to the line-up will go a long way to alleviating the problem.

Amond should never have been sat on the bench for this long.

I like him as a player HM. I've never seen a player's heading be so accurate. And he's an intelligent player who doesn't often give the ball away.

I juat think he's gone off the boil a bit and is having less impact on games now. Maybe that's partly down to Amond not being in the team, who offered good movement ahead of him, or East not playing left back and creating space for him with his overlapping runs?

I just think now would be a good time to let Marshall have a couple of games and hopefully have a point to prove.

He is a class player but has no speed and does not try and beat his man,

Maybe he is playing in the wrong position.

Nope. Think he's one of those players that make a team tick and is more appreciated by managers than fans. People saying he's slow and doesn't beat the full back but you don't have to if you're clever. He's not a traditional winger but has other attributes.

I'm not THAT concerned about Monkhouse's ability to knock the ball past a full back to beat him.

What concerns me is how he leaves his wing all the time and just drifts inside.  Be that his style of play or Hurst's tactics, it leaves our left back exposed far too much.  As a result our central midfielder players are dashing over there to cover, leaving gaps in the middle.  Whilst all this is going on Monkhouse appears to just swan about and hardly busts a gut to get back.

I think as an individual he's a cracking player, definitely has something different to anyone else in our squad and has a calmness on the ball that I've not seen in a Town player for years.  If used effectively, he's a wonderful asset for us to have.   I'm far from convinced that him as our first choice, week-in-week-out left winger is using him to the best effect.

I agree with you as usual Tommy.

Really good post.

I'd like us to play the following:

              McKeown
East  Toto  Pearson  Townsend
Marshall  Clay  Disley  Arnold
         Amond  Tomlinson

If Disley can't play (as is rumoured), I would certainly give East a try in central midfield with Tait coming in at right-back. I like Arnold on the left because he can cut in onto his right-foot and has a great shot (though his left isn't exactly bad!). Marshall is a traditional winger who I think should be more effective getting down to the touchline and putting the ball into the middle and his pace will be an asset. I think that we ought to have too much against the weakest defence in the division so don't mind if Bogle was to play instead of Tomlinson or, indeed, any two of the three strikers together. I would like to see Tomlinson and Amond play together, however. Hopefully, we will try to get it down and pass it more so wouldn't miss the aerial ability of Monkhouse too much if he drops to the bench.

I'd start Tait at LB, and Bogle and Amond. I don't know if Disley or Marshall will be fit. Presuming Gowling and Robertson won't be. I'd swap Monkouse with Marshall if possible.

East

Toto
Tait
Arnold
Clay
Disley
Marshall
Bogle
Amond

Subs: Townsend, Brown, Monkhouse, Tomlinson, YT

If Disley isn't fit, East in CM, Tait at RB, Townsend LB.
I know we've never seen East play there but we won't get a better chance against bad opposition than tomorrow.

Just listened to Tate on RH, says he isn't used to not playing and would consider moving out on loan.

That's a shame. He was one of the very few positives about Saturday's shitshow.

Certainly wouldn't blame him for that view. He looks like a good player and was obviously signed to be first choice full-back. I think the excellent performances of East at right-back and the decent performances at left-back have probably surprised Hurst (I'd guess East was signed as a back-up rather than first choice) and have therefore cost Tait his place in the team.

Hope he does stay with us, however.

I've seen a few suggesting East for central midfield.
A more realistic option for me would be to play East right midfield ahead of Tait at right-back.

if we think Townsend will start (he's a loanee! of course he will start!   )
my team would be:

Macca
East or Tait
Townsend
Nsiala
Pearson
Clay
Marshall
Disley or East
Bogle
Amond
Arnold

subs
Tomlinson
McKreth
Venney
Monkhouse
Tait if not starting or Clifton

I am assuming Diz is fit to play...with Brown still out we are a bit short there so PH will want him there if he can..If Diz is out i would put East in there and have Tait at RB. He has the energy and drive to play there and he has played there before.

I think with Monkhouse it is the tactics that let him down. The players Hurst have signed are top-class but the ancient lineup style is vague and indecisive, I would opt for a 4-1-3-2 (I know risky, but hear me out )

          McKeown
East-Gowling-Pearson-Tait
              Clay
Marshall-Monkhouse-Arnold
        Bogle-Amond

Monkhouse has literally 0 pace , and so to utilise his vision, aeriel ability and passing, if we pushed him into the middle then this would:
a) free up the wing
b)keep him in the team
Arnold performed better on the left wing, as he is able to cut in and shoot with his much-preferred right foot.
Marshall is more attacking minded than MacKreth and so will keep the wingers pushed up tight with little maneuver for opposing teams to push past.
Bogle and Amond would score more as they are supplied from the center, and crosses from the wings.
The hollding midfield would be occupied by Disley, when fit, but this not only caters for our lack of cover in the area, but also allows Clay/Disley to roam and pick off stray balls and thread them through. I belive this to be a great position for Disley and Clay to occupy as they are more defensive minded than what they are played for in a 4-4-2. I admit Clay has been more impressive this season going forwards but his tackling is ok, and can maybe come in and push up to replace Monkhouse in the dying minutes.

The defense has been bolstered by a fine loan signing, but Tait is a key player to be in the side and if playing him keeps him here long term then we should; he was also one of the better performers on Saturday.

There we go....

I know Halifax are having a bad season but we should at least start the game with 10 men otherwise it's just disrespectful

I take it back. Maybe we should have started with 9 players to give them a fighting chance!
