If Hearn's not going to be around for a few weeks, I'd like to see a bit more of D. Southwell - which of our other 'strikers' would he be best paired with, and for those who have seen him in pre-season, how does he compare with say, Bore (as a striker, not a full back) or North at a similar age?

Dayle is much better than North was. I believe if he stays for a while he will become a real crowds favourite. But I think he you was to start him, then you should partner him with Elding because of Eldings experience

Reasonable shout. He has more pace than the rest of our currently fit strike force and enthusiasm by the bucketful.

Only seen him play a couple of times myself, but looks rather small and lightweight to me. Didn't get much support on Saturday, but I'm not sure now is a good time to be looking to 18-year old kids to be getting us out of a hole - it's a lot of pressure and it won't help his confidence if the rest of the side happen to be getting booed to fúckaroo.
Having said that, it doesn't seem to have done Ryan Bennett much harm so what do I know?

Well that's comforting, you thought H&S was our saviours and we was going to take the league by storm, erm.... Anyway, although I've not seen him much, from what I've heard, he could be class act... I suppose a lot of it will be down to hard work, a bit of luck and the fans leaving him alone when he makes a mistake will help (pretty much the opposite of how the fans, or at least a lot of them, react to Bradley Wood)...

Too small and lightweight. Good in pre-season when nobody tackles him. Hope he proves me wrong and becomes a GTFC legend.

Where's Dave Boylen when you need him?
I've got a nasty feeling that Nick Hegarty was a Leeds fan too, but can't quite remember.
OK, that's Dayle Southwell, Bradley Wood, Shaun Pearson (maybe) and Ian Miller.
Just trying to find one or two reasons to drag myself back to Blundell Park when the time comes.

Too small? He's not tall but most of his preseason goals came from headers. It's all about finding space in the box.

Similar to what Poojah said really. Small, lightweight and haven't really seen anything to get excited about, reminds a bit of Andy Taylor.

Disagree re the Andy Taylor bit, he was very good during pre season, much better than Bore IMO, very sharp in the box, out jumps taller defenders and if treated right will turn out to be a star player , reminds me of a young Mendonca who when you think of it was not built like a brick karsey

Hey guess what, you can be small and lightweight and still be a good footballer. Please watch the following players for evidence of this:
Messi, L Silva, D Modric, L Xavi, H Tevez, C Iniesta, A Defoe, J Maradona, D Walcott, T
All these players are comfortably below 6ft and are far from imposing figures on the pitch. It's a good job their coaches didn't write them off aged 18 because they weren't as big as their teammates. Southwell has been impressive in pre-season and even scored a header so how about we end this ridiculous cliche that only huge illegitimates succeed at football?

That Zola chap could have been good if he'd been a little taller as well.
I'm not so sure that Defoe is good enough to be included in that list, however. Walcott certainly shouldn't be in there! He's the new Tony Daley.

Cue the overreaction brigade. No one was writing anyone off, just merely stating their opinions on Southwell from what they've seen so far which is what Marinette asked for. Interesting to see you've picked out examples from the top divisions. We're in the BSP a much more physical and a much less skillful league, thus benefiting 'huge illegitimates' rather than smaller players.

Jamie Vardy was largely regarded as the best/most effective player in the BSP last season and he was no 'huge illegitimate'. See also Scott Kerr, Dean Keates etc

If you are going to be small and lightweight you have to have tremendous skill to compensate. Most of the small players mentioned in Chrisblor's post are also physically powerful and strong despite their stature, not to mention many having blistering pace. If you are small, weak, and can get pushed off the ball by a passing rabbit, you are unlikely to make much impression in the BSP.
He seems a decent finisher, enthusiastic and determined, but I fear that may not be enough. As I said earlier, if he does make it I will be the first to both admit I was wrong and to congratulate him. I really hope I am wrong. He is still young and growing and he may develop physically which will be a tremendous help.

He looks on the young side but if im honest he wasnt short by any meens. He looks like a young player that has promise to me. given time he will get better and better and maybe a good cheap squad player to mix it up at times. Its a very early stage to know how things will progress for him as at this level teams do not have the funding to give players like Dayle more then a years pro to progress. I know a few ex town YT players that just didnt progress enough quickly enough and so not offered a contract. Ryan Bennett wasnt always going to make it, infact in his early days coming to town he apparently wasnt anything special at all but woodsey kept him on and the rest is history so to speak.
Fingers crossed for the lad

His flashes of skill are what's caught my eye.
Appreciate if you're lightweight you'll be pushed off the ball, but most successful smaller players achieve through pace and ability, not by acting as a hold up man.
Don't think he deserves any weight of expectation or pressure, just hope he progresses over time.
