I see David Beckham has said that every English player would like an English manager for whoever succeeds Fabio Capello. Problem is, there's not too many successful ones about at the moment so what should the F.A. be looking at in terms of managerial ability, rather than having just managed some team in the Premiership and probably having been sacked at least twice from clubs? It must be the ability to bring out the best in players, and probably not to be impressed by prima donnas who earn a six figure weekly wage.
Roy Hodgson and Harry Redknapp have both been spoken of possible successors, although that would indicate that it's more short term than long term given their age? If not, and the F.A. are looking for greater longevity, and not worried about age - like Trappatoni in Eire - then why not someone with a proven knowledge of unearthing talent, moulding them into excellent players, and having produced teams that regularly punch above their weight?
DARIO GRADI..............Imagine him being let loose with the wealth of young talent that's knocking on the door of the England team at the moment.

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

Alan Pardew would be in the mix surely if he keeps progressing with Newcastle. Obviously Harry Redknapp would be my choice but like you say there is not exactly a wealth of good English Managers who could manage the National side.

Dario Gradi is past it now, and has had offers from big clubs over the years but is so dedicated to Crewe and would never leave Gresty Road.

We had this debate a few weeks back.

Someone suggested getting in someone who has actually had success with an international side e.g Gus Hiddink. For all the xenophobe out there, Mr Positive - Nigel Adkins - was my favourite suggestion.

If Redknapp can get England to play football like Spurs, I will be very happy,

Jock , how about this,

Gradi as boss and Fergie as his 2nd in command.

But Redknapp is getting Spurs to play tidy football because he has the likes of Luca Mdric and Rafael Van Der Vart in the middle of the park..

Harry can buy who he likes for Spurs and he can only work with what hes got at England. At the end of the day England are not a good side and will not win anything for years and years to come im certain.

Gradi spends years coaching and developing kids; coaching a squad of professionals for a couple of days each month is hardly the same.

A year older than both Trappatoni and Ferguson. BTW, am not English, just thought the possibility might get a few replies that stimulated decent debate on the matter. If England are to really invest in youth at international level then surely someone with a proven track record should warrant consideration? I know Gradi would never get the job, but his skills should be a blueprint, surely, for anyone with long term planning in mind for the England team? What others have said about moderately successful English managers is true, reliance on foreign imports is always going to ahve a negative effect on the national team?

Spot on. I dont see Redknapp being the solution at all, he's a decent club manager but you cant deny that his two big wins(winning Portsmouth the cup and getting Spurs into the champions league)were built around vast ammounts of money(or credit cards at Portsmouth) spent on mostly foreign players. His recent health issues have got to be considered too surely? I think its a bigger job than just getting a new manager anyway, the whole set up needs to be changed from player development upwards.

The Ingerlund mob would hate it because it'd be another foreign manager but Guus Hiddink fits the bill for me.

Proven at international level, speaks fluent English unlike the incumbent, knows English football from his time at Chelsea and is well respected in the game.

I can't see 'Arry making a success of it unfortunately.

In an ideal world (for me at least) Gus Hiddink would be the next England manager. Proven track record of getting results with International teams that seem way beyond their limits. South Korea to the 2002 WC Semis as an obvious example. He did well with Russia also.

In terms of English managers, the best one out there at the moment has to be Alan Pardew. This is by no means an endorsement for him to be the next National boss, but he has done wonders at Newcastle in what appear to be very difficult circumstances.

The only thing Scotland produces of great quality (in footballing circles anyway) is managers. Unfortunately, I doubt very much any of them would want to manage England. And I'm also certain that large amounts of INGERLUND fans would hate it.

Alan Shearer must be the only man to have as many relegations as weeks in management on his CV.

Not a chance in hell.

It won't be Harry Redknapp - the FA couldn't afford his health insurance.

Not sure the FA would want someone as outspoken as The Special One. Also, great club managers don't always make great international managers; see Capello for example.

Maybe Beckham could do it from LA? After all, it seemed to work ok for Klinsmann!

Could be something in that, I don't think he was on the touchline in South Africa last year for no reason.

I would like Harry to get the job.I know he is favourite for the job once Capello stands down but now that may not happen due to Spurs seeking to secure his services for longer with a new 3 term deal

Guus Hiddink the best international manager in the world will be free in a week after Turkey's stuffing (sorry about that !) in tonight's Euro playoff first leg

England should've had him when Eriksson left BUT, that's 2 tournaments in a row Guus has failed in the playoffs.

Maybe a management duo would be the answer.
We need a short bloke and a shouty bloke who can both use ceefax and computers.

Hate to say it, but ex Iron manager Nigel Adkins fits the frame........just look what he's done in his time as manager..........

Decent shout, but he would not get the respect from English players not having played or managed top class football

I doubt the FA will look at Harry now either! Alleged Tax dodging isn't really a qualification they look for in an England manager.

I think that Adkins, excluding redknapp as stated, just shows how poor the choice is for an English manager and why we go for foreign, and no doubt will do after we again fail to qualify without one.

Sorry couldn'e be arsed to type it out - read it for yourself and compare to the donkeys we have had and may well get next (especially if they insist on an Englishman - I wonder if they will let Harry out of jail for the home games? Away matches might be a problem tho')

Guus Hiddink From Wikipedia,
Guus Hiddink is a Dutch football manager and former player. He is the current manager of the Turkish national football team. He is considered to be one of the best managers of his generation and was the best-paid coach in international football in 2009.[4] His achievements include winning the European treble (Eredivisie, Dutch Cup and European Cup) with PSV Eindhoven; managing the Netherlands and taking them to the semi-finals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup; leading South Korea to a fourth place finish in the 2002 FIFA World Cup; leading Australia to their best ever finish in the 2006 FIFA World Cup; leading Russia to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, Russia's best performance since the breakup of the Soviet Union; and leading Chelsea to an FA Cup win against Everton in 2009. Hiddink has also previously managed Fenerbahçe, Valencia & Real Madrid.

Let's hope Clueless John Fenty doesn't try to get him in to replace Itchy and Scratchy then eh?

In the meantime FFS give him the England job - he also speaks better Enflish than Capello and Redknapp
