I thought I’d post this here rather than on the feigning head injuries thread. A good example of why football needs to sort out a proper head injury protocol for in match incidents and also to reduce head impacts in training.

Yep, as did my Dad and my wife’s dad and my great auntie and wife’s mum has it . Maybe the risk is increased by heading a football I don’t know but it’s certainly not the cause to any of my family

I remember reading some statistics somewhere which indicated pro-footballers had something like three times the risk of developing dementia. This was from a cohort where the footballers will have used the big old heavy footballs, but the doctors think that the lighter balls probably will still have the same effect.

Very sad for him and his family.  I have had personal experience of this disease with close family and am doing so now.

Trevor was a class player. I always enjoyed watching him play for us.  A privilege.

Very sad indeed, it's not easy watching a loved one with Dementia gradually fade away.

When I first started playing 'mens' football I was a Centre Half and as this was in the mid 60's we were still playing with the leather footballs, I must have headed one of those balls 100's, if not 1000's of times and went on to play football either as a CB or a ST until I was 34.  So far, touch wood I do not have dementia, some on here might disagree, and I am 77 years old.

I think it's probably a matter of luck, really. If your genetics are such that you're susceptible, then you're susceptible. A bit like heart disease - some people live pretty healthy, blameless lives but then drop dead in their fifties. Others smoke, drink, take drugs but keep on chugging along until they are much older.

I do wonder if they discover the risk of dementia is based on certain genetic factors, it might eventually become the case that some people are recommended not to take part in sports such as football or boxing, especially.
