I know someone who had cancer and they were never exposed to nuclear radiation so nuclear radiation can't cause cancer.

There is a lot of talk these days of diet being a major contributing factor to dementia.

Great news. I've never been on a diet, so I should be okay.

A good way of looking at is seeing the brain in the same way as the heart.

Both benefit from healthy food,  frequent exercise and drinking in moderation.  Reducing stress levels also helps.

These factors can be controlled.

There are many different types of dementia as there are cancers.  Some inherited, whilst some people are just very unlucky.  Very old age increases the risk.

Kevin Moore had a rare form of the disease at a very young age.  He was extremely unlucky.

In say 30 years there should be better understanding and treatments.  Too late for some people now sadly.

Probably just as much a case as people living longer, Pete. A lot of people who develop dementia of some sort in older age now, might well have died a lot younger of other causes in the past due to heart disease from smoking, cancers and illnesses which are now treatable, etc etc.

Despite all our modern medical knowledge, we don't even know what causes many types of dementia, whether it's genetics or possibly infection, so we're just guessing at risk factors.

Absolute star when he was playing for Town.

Always sad to hear of any players for any team getting dementia - the families are as affected as much as the sufferer, sometimes even more as it seems like having someone with a living death knell hanging over them and not knowing how much they are loved and missed even when physically present.

It very well could be as vascular dementia is caused by blocked arteries limiting blood flow to the brain while Alzheimers is often caused by a build up of proteins around the brain cells. Alzheimers is the most common type of dementia followed by vascular dementia. More research should be carried out on this illness than it does at present instead of penny pinching on the important things in life.It is an absolutely terrible illness.

I don't necessarily know if it is diet-related as such. My Mum has vascular dementia, has always eaten very well, never overweight, extremely fit, but it still hit her. Because of her illness I've done a good bit of reading on the matter and they're not sure if the protein build up is the cause or an effect of Alzheimers yet. The antibodies which have been developed which clear one type of the protein don't work, so it might be another type of protein. They are still guessing in that regard.

There is some indication that infection with certain viruses might lead to a greater risk of developing Alzheimers, but nothing certain as yet. It is why there is concern that Covid might cause long-term problems to some of those infected. It is already increasing the number of people developing diabetes.

Dementia of whatever sort really is a terrible illness, not just for the patient, but also for their families.

It's because all the processed crap we eat hasn't got the right nutrition. A cheap chicken contains hardly any omega 3 . A free range organic one contains the right amount..
